No, not that kind. The real bears. Do we love or hate?
At one moment they’re doing cute and silly things and making adorable little faces. The next moment they’re ripping a baby’s face off.

Bears look like they stink. Can you smell bears when you are near them?
by Anonymous | reply 6 | July 11, 2025 4:56 PM |
And if you can’t, r4? They are ranging further than ever.
I’ve read they’re being spotted more regularly in lower Westchester now. It’s just a matter of time before they’re venturing into the city. (And I mean, not cabbed there by Wormhead Bob.)

I already said “not that kind of bear.”

You don’t want them around. Either kind.

I enjoy watching wildlife camera footage of them, but I see a lot of clips on Instagram featuring bears in pools and hot tubs, playing with toys in a yard and things like that. I think it’s potentially serious because these animals often get shot by game wardens or even civilians who keep weapons at home.
I really don’t enjoy vignettes captured on video with humans “baby talking” to bear cubs or really any wild animal. It’s irritating and it sets an unsafe precedent.

I had one in my front yard a couple of years after I moved here. I have photos and even a video. But I was lucky. For some reason I'd picked up my little dog to take her outside and walked down my porch steps when I caught a glimpse of the bear on the other side of the yard. Ordinarily, I would just have let the dog out by herself (which I don't do anymore). I turned around slowly and went back inside, still holding the dog.
But the bear looked so cute! He had really shiny fur (I knew the bear was a he, because my neighbor had told me that the mom and cubs were up the street in a tree) and looked so cuddly! I understood why people want to walk right up to them and pet them.
He was chowing down on the piles of acorns that had fallen from one of my many live oak trees. Then he went on to my neighbor's house through the "bear entrance," the part of the chain link fence that he's pushed down in order to get in and out. Other than replacing the fence completely, which my neighbor did not want to pay for, the was nothing I could do. The fence technically is on their property.
I've seen a handful of bears in my neighborhood since then -- both during the day and after dark. And you have to be careful driving, because they randomly run across the street, especially when you're driving through the Forest.
They are adorable. But I can live without ever seeing one again.

I remember being in Alaska, and looking at a chart which showed what to do in case you come across a bear. If you see X kind of bear, do this. But if you see Y kind of bear, do that. I said to my companion…. “Great. If we come across a bear, I’ll ask if it minds waiting, while we consult the guide book. “. “Just give us a minute. We’ll be right with you.”

I'm leaning towards nay. In both categories. Nobody needs pics of lardos in beach/pool pics on their IG. And the cartoon ones went from rustling picnic baskets and preventing forest fires to shilling toilet paper, so there is nowhere good to go.

I think that about the other kind of bear.

Bears do stink, r6. My university kept several grizzlies in captivity. Anyone could walk up to their pen and look at them. I was able to smell them from about 25 ft away.
They were alarmingly huge.

R17 absolutely maulface!
I like bears, from a respectful and above all safe distance. Both types
