Some of us love her, some of us loathe her, but everyone knows her name. Could any of us have ever imagined that she'd still be here in 2025?
Courtney may only be 61, but her liver is 93.

It was a surprise to see her name on the Patty Lupone letter a few weeks back.
When Dave Grohl announced his shock fourth kid's birth (outside his marriage), Courtney didn't say anything.
Maybe she is spending time with her grandkid. (She became a grandma this past year or so.)
Her son in law is Tony Hawk's son, so there's another reason for her to name drop.

R2 both Frances and Courtney have been mum about the grandchild, and I frankly don't know that they're in close contact. Courtney has been living in England for years now and I think Frances is firmly planted in San Diego. They could have taken trips to see each other perhaps, but if they have, it's not been made public. I sort of got the impression that Frances was not in contact with her, but it's hard to tell.

R1 if by "liver" you mean "every organ in her body," then yes.

Courtney is one of the funniest people in pop culture of the last forty years. No filter, a bit unhinged depending on which substance(s) she's on, but the bitch always makes me laugh. She has a sense of humor, which a lot of celebrities lack today. Hole was a great band, too. Here she is being interviewed by Daphne Zuniga at the 1995 VMAs just before (or possibly after) the infamous Madonna interview crash-out.

Courtney's teen glamour shots (the ones where she's in tights with a butch haircut, horrendous makeup, and is voguing—Google them if you haven't seen them) are iconic for the level of pure homeliness, but she looks rather cute in the still image at OP. She was actually an adorable girl. Puberty was not kind to her. Her dad was a hideous man, but her mom was very attractive. Both seemed to have personality disorders that she inherited in equal measure.

I'll kinda always love her. She's a mess but there's glimmers of brilliance in there.
For the Madonna interview alone......

Where the fuck are her memoirs? She posted about finishing them over a year ago.

My YouTube algorithm seems to always spit up newly-surfaced footage from Hole concerts, and they're always interesting to watch. I especially loved their early, abrasive stuff. She always looked effortlessly cool, and her stage presence teetered between vulnerable and frightening. I think she is a riveting performer. The way she randomly sings lines from Smiths songs throughout this set is hilarious.

The Courtney–Madonna saga is hilarious and goes back earlier than the historic 1995 VMA incident. On Hole's first album, Courtney wrote the line "There you go in your Nazi car, oh babydoll, what a whore you are" about Madonna because she would see her driving around in a Mercedes on Sunset Boulevard.
Madonna was emblematic of the pop diva Courtney always secretly wanted to be, but simply wasn't made for, and it's no secret Courtney had a morbid fascination with her. I think Madonna had a similar (albeit fleeting) fascination with Courtney. They each possessed traits that the other didn't. Courtney deep down yearned to be a pop star, and I think Madonna (at least at that point) wanted to be viewed as more hard-edged, which Courtney was from the beginning. It was a perfect yin and yang of two battle-axes with different stripes.

R16 I genuinely don't know which one is which, as both of these insults could be applied to either. Courtney is troubled, but I think she (mostly) means well. I think Madonna is actually a genuinely mean person.

Courtney's childhood story is SO sad and SO fucked up that I'm usually more shocked that she is even a tiny bit of a functional human being, and isn't institutionalized.

She seems to be calming down in her older age. I love her and being a mess much of my own life I can relate to her.

After her parents divorced, her mother went on to have five more kids and adopted a baby. A step dad adopted her, then her mom divorced him. At age 9, she got expelled from an expensive school, and her mom sent her to live with her adoptive dad.
It is sad. Her birth dad was messed up. Her mom, a psychologist, sent her away when she got in trouble at school. So much rejection. Then puberty hit, and she looked different, with her bone structure and wide nose. She was likely bullied at school and in public and felt even more rejected.
She had a nose job at age 20, and she says she would not have had her career without it.
She married a man who respected her success and appreciated her unconventionality. Then he committed suicide. More rejection in a very public way, followed by accusations.
I can understand why she would want to take the drugs that make her stop thinking about all that. And why she craves fame (acceptance).
Hopefully she gets to be a part of her daughter's life. But her daughter might have boundaries that Courtney keeps crossing.

R20 unfortunately the Cobain conspiracy truthers will never see her as a human like you do. She is flawed, but everyone is. Anyone with some level of emotional intelligence can see the hurt little girl in her. Her childhood wounds have followed her throughout her life and no doubt been the source of many of her problems. I don’t believe she ever felt unconditional love from either of her parents. I remember watching an interview with her once where she said her adoptive stepfather was the only adult figure in her life that she ever felt truly cared for her, which is sad.

The doc. "Kurt & Courtney" is still scathing. In less than 3 years she stalks Kurt, marries him, has his baby, gets him hooked on heroin... then has him killed because he was going to divorce her. That's how I interpreted it. She inherited everything (but did buy his mom a house, how nice).
Others in the film agree. A former bf said she tried to groom him to become a rock star. And her dad said she had similar fantasies living with him in England as a teen. He said she's a sociopath.

R22 that documentary is pretty piss-poor to be honest. I saw it years ago and found it unconvincing to say the least. If I remember correctly, they interviewed one of Kurt's childhood friends/drug buddies in it and he said that if he ever had any inkling that Courtney had done something to Kurt, he would've been in prison himself for killing her.
by Anonymous | reply 23 | July 12, 2025 7:37 PM |
Kurt was a traumatized drug addict who had been homeless at one point. He had a shirty childhood thanks to his parents and was mentally ill. The guy was not very happy. It’s awful he killed himself but not surprising if you’ve known addicts. And I find it hard to blame Courtney for his addiction. I’ve dated people and done drugs with them and the choices I made after trying those drugs were mine. I’m sure they had a toxic relationship like many people and she wasn’t perfect but she’s not the devil.

I think her Versace makeover for the 1997 Oscars was the best she's ever looked.
by Anonymous | reply 25 | July 12, 2025 7:52 PM |
Blaming Courtney for everything that ever went wrong in Kurt's life is so typical, especially because she is such a hellion of a personality--it gives people even more permission to hate her. If the Seattle PD had even a shred of suspicion or evidence that Kurt's death was anything other than a suicide, I find it difficult to believe it would not have been heavily pursued. If it weren't for quack PI Tom Grant, who has spent the last 30 years propagating this conspiracy theory as a career, I don't think the general public would be talking about this nearly as much.

Her file career fizzled around 1999. Then she went into a tailspin of druggy-type acting out for several years.
Hard to believe she was once engaged to Edward Norton.
