I am staying at a hotel tonight for a super early flight tomorrow morning. I don’t live in New York, but I do go to JFK for flights from time to time. I’ve never spent any time outside of the airport around here though.
The area around JFK airport is sketchy

Most neighborhoods near airports are kinda sketchy. You could always take the AirTran to the boardwalk

Waddya talkin' about?
Jamaican me crazy!

Stay at the airport at the TWA Hotel in the historic terminal. That way you don’t have to go beyond the airport.

Which reminds me of the scene from Seinfeld in which Elaine describes her high-speed driving trip to JFK trying to get rid of a guy from out of town before his plane leaves.

R3, that is not in my company’s list of approved hotels

[quote]Most neighborhoods near airports are kinda sketchy.
That’s not true. It very nice and upscale for SF.

OP: Open Google Maps. Go to JFK on the map. Search for hotels. You will see a string of hotels along the Belt Parkway at the northern edge of JFK. Likely they all have shuttle vans and at least one is on your approved list. You’ll never have to walk alone in Jamaica, Queens.

Often there is cheap award travel that involves a late flight into JFK and then the next leg leaves in the morning. I’ve wondered about staying overnight in the area.
by Anonymous | reply 8 | July 11, 2025 1:30 AM |
That’s SF. I didn't say ALL.
by Anonymous | reply 9 | July 11, 2025 1:31 AM |
R6, are you of limited capacity? That's okay, but logic is not a matter of faith or ignorant assertion.
How in the world does San Francisco's airport area being nice prove that most neighborhoods by airports aren't sketchy?
Please try not to degrade communication to pose as a winner.

The Hyatt Regency at Resorts World isn’t bad. The TWA Hotel is awesome but pricey. Worth it though, because it’s unique.
by Anonymous | reply 11 | July 11, 2025 1:35 AM |
The bad thing about the TWA Hotel is that the bar closes early. 10 p.m. or so.
by Anonymous | reply 12 | July 11, 2025 1:41 AM |
I hope you are not by the Hudson University campus!
by Anonymous | reply 13 | July 11, 2025 1:43 AM |
Err, how about ordering room service and staying inside?
by Anonymous | reply 14 | July 11, 2025 1:48 AM |
People of means have no desire to live close to a facility that creates that kind of noise.
by Anonymous | reply 15 | July 11, 2025 1:52 AM |
R15 Exactly. No one is going to have a nice home in a flight path.
by Anonymous | reply 16 | July 11, 2025 1:58 AM |
The area around JFK is the Ghetto OP

You're telling me!!!

One tends to disagree.

The area around St. Louis is very nice. So is Salt Lake City.
by Anonymous | reply 20 | July 11, 2025 5:01 PM |
How far away is acceptable to you OP?
by Anonymous | reply 21 | July 11, 2025 5:10 PM |
Some of us can’t get away from the sketchy areas at all, r21.
by Anonymous | reply 22 | July 11, 2025 5:15 PM |
Those hotels near JFK aren't cheap either ~4-500/night.
by Anonymous | reply 23 | July 11, 2025 5:21 PM |
"The area around St. Louis is very nice."
If you meant to say the area around St. Louis Airport is very nice, you couldn't be more wrong. Berkeley, Kinloch, Hazlewood, St. Ann, Ferguson might have been nice 50 years ago, but they are not now. They're downright trashy and the crime statistics, declining real estate prices and terrible, unaccredited school districts back that up.
by Anonymous | reply 24 | July 11, 2025 5:31 PM |
Berkeley has always been sketchy. Always free speech riots or protests.
by Anonymous | reply 25 | July 11, 2025 5:40 PM |
There's some good dick to be had around there, though.
by Anonymous | reply 26 | July 11, 2025 5:43 PM |
Yeah. The in-laws live close to JFK in the Five Towns. Rockaway Blvd is pretty gross and whatever motels are there are definitely not recommended.
by Anonymous | reply 27 | July 11, 2025 5:53 PM |
Would native New Yorkers consider the area around JFK dangerous or just ugly and undesirable?
by Anonymous | reply 28 | July 11, 2025 6:37 PM |
Ugly, not particularly dangerous. Actually pretty middle class.
Hotels are not nice though.

Here is what Google AI says in response to the question “ are the neighborhoods around JFK airport safe”:
“While JFK airport itself is very safe with a strong security presence, some of the surrounding neighborhoods in Queens, particularly those closer to the airport, may have a higher crime rate compared to more affluent areas of the city. It's advisable to be aware of your surroundings, especially at night, and avoid walking alone in poorly lit areas. ”
by Anonymous | reply 30 | July 11, 2025 6:52 PM |
As long as you’re going to the airport via cab from the hotel front door, who cares
by Anonymous | reply 31 | July 11, 2025 6:54 PM |
I'm guessing you weren't planning to take a walk last night were you? yes, lots of airports' hotels are in not great places, like LAX for example, but if all you're doing is staying over night, so what. They're used to operating there and probably should know how to manage security.
by Anonymous | reply 32 | July 11, 2025 7:13 PM |
The hotels around JFK are used as homeless shelters. I think that’s more of the issue than walking around.
by Anonymous | reply 33 | July 11, 2025 7:14 PM |
Where exactly do people "walk around" near JFK? I've been flying in and out of there my whole life and never left the terminal.
The immediate area around LaGuardia is also kinda suspect, but you can get to Astoria or Jackson Heights quickly.
by Anonymous | reply 34 | July 11, 2025 7:20 PM |
R33: Hotels used for the homeless aren't used for normal transients. Besides the unpopularity of mixing the two clientele among tourists, it's more efficient to serve only one or the other; the homeless means no need for room service, food service, etc.
