When people tell you to “guess”

I hate that. Guess who I ran into today. Guess what my sister told me. With a universe of possibilities, how am I ever going to guess? I can’t even get Wordle on the first guess.

I appreciate when you acknowledge that you will never be able to guess and they tell you. But I hate when people make you go on and on about it.

I hate when people ask me to guess and then tell me my guess is wrong. They should at least pretend what I guessed is true, but maybe my guesses are too elaborate.

by Anonymousreply 1July 11, 2025 1:04 AM

Guess what, OP.

by Anonymousreply 2July 11, 2025 1:12 AM

OP learn to say these words, " I wouldn't have a clue, tell me" if they say, no guess, repeat " I wouldn't have a clue, tell me"

by Anonymousreply 3July 11, 2025 1:16 AM

Well, sometimes it's asked rhetorically, OP, with the answer directly following as in:

"Guess who I saw today, Semolina Beaterbars!"

by Anonymousreply 4July 11, 2025 1:20 AM

Guess you're a pissy twat, OP.

by Anonymousreply 5July 11, 2025 1:35 AM

Mom: "Guess who called me today!"

Me: "Leonard Bernstein."

Mom: "What? Why would you ever think that he would call me?"

Mom never did understand sarcasm.

Try giving a ridiculous answer. If asked “guess who I ran into today?”, reply JFK junior. Or Rose Nyland. Or Dame Nellie Melba. Or Amelia Earhart.

by Anonymousreply 7July 11, 2025 1:50 AM

No need to be so literal, OP: It's just a conventional topic-opener expression. The correct response to, "Guess who I ran into today!" is, "Who?". (Alternatively, the correct response is a harsh "[italic]Whom![/italic].) The correct response to, "Guess what my sister told me!" is, "What?".

by Anonymousreply 8July 11, 2025 2:01 AM

Nobody has to guess that OP is on the spectrum.

by Anonymousreply 9July 11, 2025 2:13 AM

The perfect answer is : "I'm not going to guess because I really don't care."

That shuts them up all the time.

by Anonymousreply 10July 11, 2025 2:21 AM

You sound fun, R10

by Anonymousreply 11July 11, 2025 2:24 AM

If you have any friends or acquaintances who ask these kind of questions, banish them.

Problem solved.

by Anonymousreply 12July 11, 2025 2:27 AM

What if it's your mom?

by Anonymousreply 13July 11, 2025 2:45 AM

Guess how little I care.

by Anonymousreply 14July 11, 2025 2:46 AM

OP, learn what a rhetorical question is. Also look up "ice breaker."

by Anonymousreply 15July 11, 2025 2:47 AM

[quote] No need to be so literal, OP

When people ask me how am I doing, I speak at length about any recent medical history. If they don’t want to hear, they shouldn’t have asked.

I have two neighbors who are brothers. One brother loves to throw this in when they squabble,

“Guess what?”

“What?”

“Fuck you.”

Gets me every time.

by Anonymousreply 17July 11, 2025 2:58 AM

Are those two brothers in middle school ? Sounds like it.

by Anonymousreply 18July 11, 2025 11:50 AM

Guess what?

Chicken butt.

Guess why?

Chicken thigh.

Guess who?

Chicken poo.

Catherine Tate has a character who loves asking her colleagues to guess things.

I love 20 questions so I'm a guess what person. The people who won't even play along a little bit are usually bores.

by Anonymousreply 23July 11, 2025 12:31 PM

Some of you people seem to have Zero Tolerance! for the littlest things.

If somebody tries the guessing game once, where’s the harm? If they do it too often, just insult them.

“Guess what I did this morning!”

“…. finally joined a gym?”

by Anonymousreply 24July 11, 2025 12:44 PM

I always give a stupid answer to "guess what?" questions. It's fun being an asshole sometimes.

by Anonymousreply 25July 11, 2025 3:14 PM

I love the enthusiasm and positive energy of asking “guess what?”

by Anonymousreply 26July 11, 2025 3:17 PM

My mom (who I loved) used to make me crazy asking me to guess something. "Guess who called today." "I don't know." "Guess." "I don't feel like it." "Just guess." "I can't." "Oh, come on." "Aunt Mary." "No." "Uncle John." "You're way off."

I used to indulge her because she was excited and it was just her way. What can you do?

“The jury finds the defendant not guilty of murder on account that the victim asked ‘guess who I saw today’ “
