They are opening lots of new corner stores and bodegas in my city.

Some right in front of an Aldi.

I love it but how does this make economical sense?

Some small stores are nothing more than fronts for money laundering and selling drugs. Not most - but some are. At least 30 years ago, that was true in NYC.
