As someone said above, he wants to siphoned off votes from the Republican party. maybe 1% to 3%. It's more cost effective than what he was going to do which was try and fund the opposition of every Republican who voted for that bill. He's even playing Trump's game calling it the American party. If you don't like the party you must be un-American.
