A brief history of gay club anthem “Don’t Cry For Me Argentina”
With a new production of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s musical Evita starring Rachel Zegler as Eva Peron and a sweaty, shirtless, underwear-clad Diego Andres Rodriguez as Che hitting the West End, we thought now would be the perfect time to revisit one of the show’s biggest numbers: “Don’t Cry For Me Argentina.”
Believe it or not, the song has been around for almost half a century now, and has performed and recorded (and butchered) by a number of different artists–from Patti LuPone to Donna Summer to Madonna.

When did "Don't Cry For Me Argentina" surpass "I Will Survive" as our anthem?!

Karen Carpenter, Sinead O'Connor and Olivia Newton-John all sang it. (didn't read the article, was probably in the article.)

In no gay club on Earth has Don't Cry For Me Argentina been an anthem.

The clip from the movie plays every Sunday at Sidetrack in Chicago. Complete with paper napkins tossed in the air. (1:20 mark in video.)
