Gus Van Sant's "Drugstore Cowboy" (1989)

This dour indie cult classic stars Matt Dillon as a scummy drug addict in 1971 Portland, Oregon. Criterion put it out on 4K recently and I just revisited it for the first time in years. It is a great movie—maybe Van Sant's best, and I'm not really a fan of his in general. It had always been a curio for me as it was filmed and set in my hometown. It has a great cast, with Kelly Lynch playing Damon's wife, along with James LeGros, Heather Graham, James Remar, Max Perlich, and Grace Zabriskie. The legendary William S. Burroughs also makes a minor appearance as a priest. Dillon is beyond sexy in it. Were/are you a fan?

Why did Kelly Lynch’s career go straight down the shitter?

by Anonymousreply 7July 1, 2025 2:16 AM

It's my favorite movie of his. The only one I bother rewatching on a regular basis.

R8 same here. I much prefer it to "My Own Private Idaho"--I never really enjoyed that one despite the gay themes.

I recall not caring for it.

Max Perlich was so cute in it. I was obsessed with that guy. He looks now too.

The ending of this movie makes me cry - in some ways, it's almost like the ending of OUR TOWN, where Emily comes to see the extraordinary in the ordinary.

Great - another drug-promoting film. Wow.
