To Be and To Have. It’s a documentary about a one room schoolhouse in rural France and the single teacher that teaches all the kids. I saw it over 20 years ago, but I remember being very charmed by it. A couple of the kids (aged 4-12) were real firecrackers.

"Amélie"was not nearly as beloved in France as it was abroad. Critics found it twee and designed for international audiences. The director, Jean-Pierre Jeunet, bitterly responded that "French people only like films in which couples argue while doing the dishes"

When I saw this thread title, I thought to myself, "Ugh! I'm not sure I would watch a movie I thought would be charming."
And I was right; I've only seen two of the movies in this thread, and I didn't even like The Birdcage.
I'll leave the "charming" movies to you appreciative gentlemen.

I'll never understand all the love for The Birdcage. Nathan Lane's performance was beyond caricature, Robin Williams' talents were wasted, and the entire movie was an unbelievable pile of failed comedic moments.
The only good thing about it was Hank Azaria in a thong.

The original 1959 “Gidget” with Sandra Dee, James Darren, Cliff Robertson and Arthur O’Connell. It was charming. There was nothing wacky or kooky about it like all of the remaining Gidget movies and Beach Party movies. I love the beach locations and cars and late 1950s Southern California feel. Sandra Dee wasn’t treacly sweet. James Darren and Cliff Robertson , Doug McClure etc were all tanned, sandy and handsome. The movie smells like clean beach towels and Coppertone. A charming Summer favorite.
