Given that she began in the 1910s pre-Hollywood and is recognizable amongst every single generation since the 1910s, would it be fair to say she is the most famous?
Is Billie Burke The Most Famous Actor Of All Time?

I doubt very many people today know the name Billie Burke. Even if they saw The Wizard of Oz.

Yeah but they know her.

Huh? The fuck?
I have no idea who that is.

If you took 50 photos of famous actors in front of every age group over the last 100 years, she would be recognized by each age group.

As Glinda not Billie

R3 She was in a movie called “The Wizard of Oz”. It came out in 1939 and she played Glinda the Good Witch.
Her first film was in 1915 which means that people have been watching her for 110 years.

R6 So how should I have worded it?
Is the actress who played Glinda from the Wizard of Oz the most famous actor of all time?
by Anonymous | reply 8 | June 29, 2025 7:55 PM |
She was excellent in Dinner at Eight.

Ugh, thanks R7 I know who she is now, but no, people aren’t watching her, movies that were released before 1950 are very hard to find and people are not watching movies from the 1910s and the 1920s.

yes

R11 Yes, I preferred her after the transition as well.

No, OP. besides The Wizard of Oz, she was in a number of movies in both the silent and sound eras, but the audience for global films grew exponentially since she died. It is more likely it would be someone like Samuel L. Jackson who has been in so many global hits that have been repeatedly televised too.

OP- Billie Burke was NOT an actor. She was an ACTRESS.
by Anonymous | reply 15 | June 29, 2025 9:36 PM |
She was *this* close to getting cast as Scarlett O'Hara.

No. Marilyn Monroe and Shirley Temple are two movie stars that even kids in high school can recognize. If you showed them a picture of Billie Burke in costume, they might know her character, but not her real name.

R19 But there would be more teenagers who recognize Billie Burke before Monroe and Shirley Temple. I don’t get Shirley Temple, she’s way long gone.
by Anonymous | reply 20 | June 29, 2025 9:58 PM |
No, Marilyn Monroe is.

Yeah, because Billie Burke is still hanging out with the boys at the bodega

R14 Samuel Jackson has been around since the 80s. How can he compete with 1915 - 2025???
My point is — if Billie had been around since 1915 - 1939 and then kids from the 40s, 50s, 60s, 70s, 80s, 90s, 00s, 10s, 20s have watched her in the Wizard of Oz then 110 years worth of people have been consistently watching an actress who has been around since the 1910s.

R22 But little kids watch the Wizard of Oz today.
Which means a 3 year old can recognize an actress who had been performing in films since 1915.
You cannot name another actor who has that span.

My money is on John Wilkes Booth.
