"Death to the IDF" chants at Pro Palestine Glastonbury performance
Glastonbury Festival organisers said they are "appalled" by comments made by punk duo Bob Vylan that called for "death" to the Israeli military during a performance on Saturday.
Rapper Bobby Vylan led chants of "free, free Palestine" and "death, death to the IDF [Israel Defense Forces]".
The festival said the statements "very much crossed a line", while antisemitism campaigners said they will formally complain to the BBC over its "outrageous decision" to broadcast the act live.
A BBC spokesperson previously said some of the comments were "deeply offensive", adding it had issued a warning on screen about "very strong and discriminatory language". The set will not be available on BBC iPlayer.

The IDF is an occupying force, They're an invading army. They aren't some band of defenseless innocents.

How ironic that a bunch of people at a European music festival have no empathy for hundreds of young people being raped and slaughtered at another music festival by an invading army of islamic terrorists.
They don't have the fucking balls to call out islam, the horrendous lack of human rights in islamic countries, or the massacres being perpetuated daily by islamic terror groups around the globe.

I guess antisemitism is how you build your brand and grow your fandom these days. Do your thing, Mossad.
Not surprised two black Brits came out with this statement, though. Teacake has a lot to answer for.

The Israeli military represents Jews as whole, r4? I think that's a wildly antisemitic thing to say.
Do you think Sicilian mobsters represent the Catholic Church?

It used to be anti-semitic to say all Jews are Israeli subjects. Now it's anti-semitic to say they aren't, apparently.

Saying “death to the IDF” instead of chanting “death to the Jews” gives the participants a little cover. Not much though, since everyone is aware of the trick of substituting “IDF” or “Israel” to avoid the censors. It’s like how on TikTok, people substitute “corn” for “porn”, “unaliving” for “kill”, or “pew pew” for “gun”.

I read this the other day:
Since early civilization, Jewish people have been hated and kicked out of every country they’ve ever occupied.
They were finally given their own country and in less than a century, that country has become the most hated country in the world.
Maybe it’s them?

r5, that’s a piss poor analogy.

Since Israel has universal conscription, they know exactly what they're saying here: "Death to every Israeli". These are the people who claim to be "anti-genocide".
Notice how their chants never mention peace--they are almost always calls to violence.

And yet Bob Dylan still hasn’t sued the band for trademark/copywrite infringement. Why the hell not?

R14 That would put an instant target on his back, which he neither needs nor deserves. He spent quite a bit of time in Israel in the 70s and 80s and there are videos on YouTube of him fundraising for Chabad and other very Jewish organizations. This shithead knows exactly what he's doing shouting death to the IDF while calling himself "Bob Vylan".
The very Jewish band Haim who have quite a lot of Israeli family members were also performing at that festival. I can only imagine how shitty/scary an experience that must have been for them.

I protested the Iraq war pretty heavily. I cannot imagine "DEATH TO US SOLDIERS!" ever catching on like this. Same during Vietnam. Sure, soldiers were heavily criticized and judged (sometimes fairly, sometimes unfairly), but the only people who said shit like this were pretty widely recognized as far-left terrorists and didn't particularly deny that.
The Islamic Republic chants "Death to Israel, death to America". Are we still in denial about the effectiveness of their mass propaganda campaign?

One of the elderly Jewish victims who were set on fire in the streets of Boulder by a pro-pali "activist" finally succumbed to her extensive injuries and died in the hospital today.
Words and actions have consequences, these events don't happen in a vacuum. Chanting violent threats like "death death death to the IDF" or "globalize the intifada" (and I'm not gonna argue about what the "real" meaning is, just like I wouldn't argue with a black person that I can use the N word cause I'm just singing along and dont have any hate behind it) and endless fear mongering are bound to push already unstable people to commit horrible acts. If you don't actively police these more radical people out of your movement then you are essentially complicit.

Of course, if the band had chanted 'Death, Death to Hamas', Kier Starmer and the BBC would have cheered them on.
But Hamas are not a genocidal occupying force. The IDF are.

R18 Hamas is a globally recognized terrorist organization. The IDF is no different than the US or British or French or Canadian military. You can have all the issues with them that you like--that does not magically make them a terrorist organization. Words have meaning.

R19 are the French or Canadian militaries engaged in genocide? I'll grant you the US and UK ones are supporting the genocide in Gaza.

R20 The US' war with Iraq resulted in 400,000-700,000 civilian deaths between 2003 and 2011 alone (and that's just in Iraq). Over 90% were considered violent. So only one year longer than the war in Gaza (56,000 deaths with 15,000-20,000 estimated to be Hamas militants).
Did that result in the US military being labeled a terrorist organization?
