Braces / Invisalign

Any advice, thoughts, recommendations regarding orthodontic treatment after 40? Reddit is full of Invisalign bots and googling results are primarily orthodontists offering advice.

I’m looking for pros and cons for getting Invisalign. I’d like to hear about other’s experiences. How do your teeth look 2-5-10 years after treatment? Is there data supporting treatment will prevent the need for crowns and root canals later in life? Any risk to bone loss?

One thing you should consider is what your lip line might be like after correction. The older you get the thinner your lips get, and you don't want to end up with a look that gives any suggestion of "old person with false teeth out".

I had an orthodontist tell me he could correct my crossbite with Invisalign. After three plus years, it did nothing for my crossbite but fucked up my teeth in other ways.

by Anonymousreply 2June 28, 2025 3:29 PM

I had Invisalign on my bottom teeth, which were shifting outward. It’s really worked and I don’t have any issues career several years.

I will say, it’s absolutely crucial to wear a retainer once you stop wearing the actual Invisalign molds.

Crooked teefs? ... I use a ballpeen hammer!

We'll order you some plates for top and bottom and problem solved!

by Anonymousreply 4June 28, 2025 3:35 PM

Not Invisalign exactly, but next month I’m going to start wearing them both day and night, per the suggestion of my TMJ specialist. I’m hoping it helps muscle tension and the headaches I’ve been having. I was screwed when I was fitted with braces for 2 years in the 70s, by a guy who apparently didn’t know what he was doing.

How/why would your lip line change, [R1]? If they do, orthodontists should get trained in performing lip injections. It would make sense for the overall end appearance of one’s smile/face.

I did an express treatment some years ago (4/6 months, I think? ) to halt and straighten out the tooth migration and crowding that comes with age. I'm glad I did, but I'm not sure the people behind the invisalign process really know exactly what they're doing. You'll probably end up with some unwanted spaces or the like. It happened to me. Nothing serious, but it's less well controlled than they'd have you believe.

by Anonymousreply 7June 28, 2025 5:44 PM

R3 I agree. 10 years later, I still wear as retainers every night. My teeth are as good as the day I was “done.” Iim very satisfied.

by Anonymousreply 8June 28, 2025 5:57 PM

I had lower teeth braces at 60. I had braces as a teen and my teeth were perfect but over the decades the lower teeth shifted. I had the kind of braces that are anchored on the back of the teeth rather than the front. Metal and ceramic I guess. no bands around the entire teeth. It was mildly uncomfortable but also brainless, I didn't have to DO anything. It took about a year maybe a bit more. afterwards, they put a permanent 1 bar retainer on my lower teeth so they dont move again from 60 to 80.

Content. Kind of pricey.

by Anonymousreply 9June 28, 2025 6:17 PM

I did Invisiline and although I ended up doing more rounds than we had originally thought, it didn’t cost extra and I’m happy with the result. Note the price can vary wildly depending on where you live and what your dentist is charging (and how many trays/stages you need). If you do it, get one of those gizmos to buzz the trays clean.

Efferdent works fine.

by Anonymousreply 11June 28, 2025 6:46 PM

R2, that happened to my brother too, who lost 2 years for an invisalign treatment that did nothing for him and had to get braces after that because even though the treatment did nothing his teeth were now in an unstable state and had to be restrained.

by Anonymousreply 12June 28, 2025 6:59 PM

Braces will give you better results. My mom had Invisalign to correct her crooked bottom teeth, and her results aren't perfect. I had braces on my upper and bottom teeth and have permanent retainers on both now. My teeth are textbook straight and will likely remain that way forever.

by Anonymousreply 13June 28, 2025 11:34 PM

I'm glad I found this thread. I'm in my 40s and wasn't sure whether to get braces or Invisalign. Seems like the consensus is that braces give you better results in the end, though they're not the most aesthetically pleasing

by Anonymousreply 14June 28, 2025 11:42 PM

r14 get the kind I got - its all on the back of the teeth.

by Anonymousreply 15June 28, 2025 11:50 PM

I did Candid for just over a year total, I had very crooked lower teeth, and my two front upper teeth were protruding far out beyond the others. When I smiled the others regressed in the shadows. Once it was over I went from retainers every night, to every other etc, and for the last year and a half I wear them once a week. Candid was direct to consumer, and when they ended that I had the opportunity to purchase 4 sets for $100 each, with the idea they would last for a year for each set. But since I wear them only once a week now, they’ll last longer.

I am aware of them the first 15 minutes I put them in, it’s amazing how much our teeth want to move. I was in my late 50’s when I did it. I looked at Invisalign, but hate those ugly hooks they glue on your teeth.

by Anonymousreply 16June 29, 2025 5:03 AM

Invisalign hooks or nubs are of no thought when you have them.

by Anonymousreply 17June 29, 2025 9:19 AM

Had braces for a few years in my early to mid teens, had to wear a retainer for a year afterward and my teeth still fucking shifted. Mom was out $3K for all that. That wasn't the worst part: the rubber bands the orthodontist made me wear to realign my overbite (or something!) gave me TMJ that I foolishly never bothered to treat while I was still covered under a dental plan.

In short: Dr. Siemens, if you're reading this, go fuck yourself to hell and back you greedy sister fucker.

by Anonymousreply 18June 29, 2025 9:56 AM

are we supposed to know the meaning of TMJ, let alone the horror of suffering from it?

by Anonymousreply 19June 29, 2025 10:05 AM

Yes. It is that common, you should know. Every dentist asks about it. Do you ever see a dentist?

by Anonymousreply 20June 29, 2025 10:38 AM

Do it! I did it in my early 40’s and have been happy with the results. 10 years later (and wearing a retainer for most nights), my teeth look straight.

It takes about a month to get used to the routine but then it’s easy.

I actually found a discount on Groupon (remember that?), so I think I did the whole process—2 years—for $3000.

by Anonymousreply 21June 29, 2025 11:55 AM

Invisalign vs braces.

It depends on how crooked your teeth are and the end result you need. If it’s minor shifting, Invisalign is fine. If it’s something major, consider braces. As an adult however, you may not want to wear metal.

My friend did Invisalign for a year and then braces for 6 months for perfection. Dentists and mix it up to get the final result you need

Too Many Jerks online?

by Anonymousreply 24June 29, 2025 11:16 PM

I’m 52, and had a 2-year Invisalign treatment 10 years ago for moderate misalignment. Overall I’m very happy, and 10 years down the line my teeth haven’t shifted back, although I’ve been very diligent at wearing my retainers every nigh since then. The treatment was longer than initially thought, and also involved hooks and small rubber bands, thankfully quite discreet at the back of my mouth. I would definitely do it again if required. If you’d prefer braces, you can have them placed at the back of the teeth, however apparently it’s pretty tough at the beginning as you keep cutting your tongue on them.

by Anonymousreply 25June 30, 2025 12:15 AM

if someone is cutting their tongue on back-of-teeth braces, the orthodontist sucks. It's 2025.

by Anonymousreply 26June 30, 2025 2:05 AM

LOL you guys. TMJ = [bold]T[/bold]emporo[bold]M[/bold]anibular [bold]J[/bold]oint problems.

I don't have pain so much as tension headaches and issues chewing for moderate periods of time. Haven't enjoyed gum for over 30 years (it's terrible anyway with the artificial sweeteners in it now).

I had Invisalign about 4 years ago. My teeth were crowded enough that the orthodontist was considering recommending removing one of them to make enough room. Thankfully, he was able to make do by filing them down (which was pretty unpleasant - it amounts to having strips of sandpaper run through the gaps in your teeth). The treatment lasted a year and a half and because I've been diligent about wearing the retainers while I sleep, have perfectly retained their shape today. I'm very happy with the result and wish I had done it decades earlier. I did wind up forgetting my retainers on a 3-week trip and had to get a new set of corrective trays made, a $1,500 mistake.

by Anonymousreply 29June 30, 2025 2:37 AM

Whatever method you use you’ll have to wear a retainer forever. I had my bite corrected forty years ago (in 20s) and within a year of removal of braces my teeth were worse. In those days they didn’t tell you to wear a retainer.
