What is it like to fly private?

Do you still have to go through TSA? I've seen people being driven right up to the plane. Is that only in special cases? Is there a separate private terminal? Can you smoke on a private plane?

Yes you can smoke. There are ashtrays everywhere. The flight attendants are smoking as they refresh your drink.

I only know one person who has flown private. He was going to a company retreat with about 10 other people and he said the plane felt tiny and claustrophobic.

I imagine it's way more fun if you're by yourself.

We were invited to a friend's family chalet in Switzerland last winter. We flew with them on their "family" jet from London to Gstaad. It was pretty amazing & a comfortable, beautiful plane. We didn't smoke (could have as his dad is a smoker & you could tell it's been smoked in), but we did drink like crazy. Food was catered in from some amazing Indian restaurant in Belgravia. It's fun having generous friends with old family $$.
