Remembering Katharine Hepburn, gone June 29, 2003. Here's the role that redefined the great Kate's image, Tracy Lord in "The Philadelphia Story." After a near-decade of many duds mixed with a few gems, Kate's quirky, haughty image needed a reset. Hepburn took to Broadway in "The Philadelphia Story," written for her. Kate came back to Hollywood, delightful in the film version, w/ Cary Grant, Oscar winners James Stewart & Ruth Hussey. Still smart, adult, and funny. And Kate, aided by Philip Barry & George Cukor, is more accessible & less actress-y, divine as Tracy. My look at the '40s screen Kate:

I just watched 1940’s The Philadelphia Story for the first time.
Please, dear God.
If that were even true, why would you admit it. 🧐

She’s utterly convincing as an Asian in 1944’s Dragon Seed.

The film version takes on Kate's '30s box office poison/unlikable factor in the famous opening scene. I'm not the biggest Kate Hepburn fan, but this movie smartly recalibrated Kate's screen image.

I like a lot of her movies but this isn’t one of them. Not because of her, I just find the whole thing contrived and annoying, and it doesn’t help that Cary Grant grabs her by the face and pushes her to the floor at the start of the movie.

this is 1 old school star I dislike!

I love PA Story.
Jimmy Steward was kinda beautiful and Cary Grant (hubba-hubba) and Kate all cheekbones and rail thin and comic.
I don't think Ruth Hussey won the Oscar for this movie, but she was nominated for the role.

Reply 13, thanks for the catch. I read that she had, but she was just nominated. Jane Darwell won for "The Grapes of Wrath." Thx@

So much fun, I love The Philadelphia Story and even enjoy Jimmy Stewart who for some reason I usually kind of hate.

I like a lot of Hepburn’s screwball comedies, but this one never worked for me. I really wish they had cast Spencer Tracy or Clark Gable in Stewart’s role. Stewart winning his only Oscar from the film felt like the Academy was making up for not giving it to him for Mr. Smith Goes to Washington the year prior.

It isn't a screwball comedy, r21.

You’re right, R22, it’s more of a romcom than screwball comedy. I still don’t care for it.

The part where her father explains that if he'd had 'nice' daughter he wouldn't have had to cheat on his wife is so spot on.

Spot on how?

Never a fan of this film. A real disappointment considering its classic status. But I think the scene where Kate meets Stewart and Hussy is excellent.
Holiday is far better. But in the 1930 original on youtube Ann Harding is far better than Kate. A really wonderful performance with a terrific Mary Astor as the sister. The duds are Johhny and the brother(who originated the role in the Broadway production.) Also the playroom scene has none of the fun of the Cukor version. But a must see for Harding and Astor. Beautiful print too. Though I've never found the sister turning into a venal bitch all that convincing after all the love and understanding the sisters show one another at the beginning.

I didn’t know there was a 1930 version of Holiday, would like to see it. I love the Hepburn version and have seen it many times. Could only watch The Philadelphia Story once.

TPS is great and I'm a huge Hepburn's admirer - here and elsewhere - but this is my favorite scene in the film.

R27 Yes Harding is a real revelation. I only knew her by name. She is for the most part very contemporary.

Kelly in the musical version is lovely and as animated as a cardboard box.

Yes, Tracy's father and ex-husband rationalizing their flaws by her judging them doesn't really fly too well today.

I first saw The Philadelphia Story as a teenager. After that, whenever my mother gave me an order she'd get back, "We'll do our best, Mrs Lord. I don't know how good that is."
