Jewel is a very mysterious pop culture artifact to me. Extremely talented, I think—there is no arguing that she is a fantastic singer (classically trained, no less), and she's also a very underrated guitarist. She is an accomplished musician and deserves credit for that.

However, I find something off-putting about her that's become clearer to me in recent years. She seems to toe the line between artist and commercial commodity/self-help guru/entrepreneur in a way that makes her ring disingenuous. I first noticed this around 10 years ago when she was trying to peddle her self-taught anxiety "coping techniques" (which she claims she came up with as a way of dealing with the stress of being homeless) to big corporations as a way of dealing with stressors in corporate work environments. I don't think it ever went anywhere, but she was doing press about it for a bit. For a folk singer who came from the boondocks of Alaska, it seemed like a strange fit. She's dipped her toes in other similar "human development" and mental health ventures since.

There's also the fact that she has rarely given an interview in the last 20 years where she doesn't talk about living in her car and being homeless. It's the same story again and again, and all of these business endeavors she starts seem to spring from this experience. I find it very bizarre. I wish she would just focus her efforts on making music because it's what she's good at, but all of these extraneous endeavors give me the impression that she's more interested in chasing the next dollar than she is in being an artist. It makes her appear covetous above all else, and I don't really trust her. The strangest part of it is that her quasi-hippie persona is in direct contradiction with that kind of avarice. These days, she's no different than the millions of "influencers" out there seeking to make a buck. It's a shame because I thought she was above that, though, looking back, I have to wonder how calculated her career was from the start. I'm not sure I believe a lot of what she says.

I have been following her on Instagram for several years. I noticed recently that she has been looking different. She does look extremely thin. She looks like she’s had some plastic surgery and many of her photos look Photoshopped.

It is sad because I think she is a naturally beautiful woman. She used to be the anti-Madonna but it has become apparent in recent years that she is just like every other celebrity.

I was in college at the height of her fame. She was average weight with big boobs. Not particularly thin and anorexic girls called her “fat” when guys would lust after her.

The thing about her upbringing in Alaska - she was near Homer which has 5,000 people. Homer is not particularly cold - the winters, though dark, are comparable to Michigan or lower Wisconsin or lower Minnesota. A lot of people come from a similar small town in Midwest states with similar or worse climates, but because it's Alaska - there's an ooooh and ahhhh over it.

Her dad was very educated (helped write the Alaska constitution) and her mom wrote a column for an Anchorage paper. (The same woman who she says stole all her money (?)). She went to Interlochen boarding school - where a LOT of famous people went, including Chapell Roan and Josh Groban.

She doesn't come from nothing. I'm not saying she was wealthy - not at all. But she had connections and privileges and knew of the outside world. And her Alaska environment wasn't THAT harsh at all. It was all an image created around her.

From like 1995 -2005 anorexia was the beauty standard. Girls would starve themselves so they wouldn't have a "muffin top". Sarah MacLachlan was not skinny either, nor was Natalie Merchent - they, too, were all normal weight and healthy-looking.

Courtney Love, who actually WAS on heroin in 1995, wasn't "skinny" either. Her weight fluctuated a bit and she went through thinner periods, but she also had some meat on her despite being the poster child for gen X female heroin addicts.

I have difficulty understanding how a dirt poor “homeless” kid ends up at the prestigious Interlochen. I know two people who went there and both were from families with money.

She applied and got a partial scholarship, while the remainder of the funds for her first year's tuition came from local businesses in her hometown donating items for auction. As to how the tuition was paid beyond that, I have no clue.

R75 I think she’s still not mentally well. She has really terrible OCD, which she talked about on Marc Maron’s podcast years ago. I’ll never forget her saying on that podcast that she would “see faces” when she was doing things like turning on her shower or water faucets, and she’d have to keep repeating turning the water on and off until she saw “the right” face in her mind. That, and she’s had an eating disorder for decades. I remember she looked absolutely gaunt on one of her tours she did (maybe ten years ago now, or a bit more?)

I think she lives a pretty low-key hermit life in LA and only comes out of the woodwork if she has written/recorded a new album, which is only about once every decade. I seem to remember her saying on the Maron podcast that she also smoked a lot of weed, which frankly isn’t great for people who already have mental disorders. She’s an interesting person and a great songwriter—she just has some issues.
