The New York Times reports that 75% of Democrats support states being able to require websites to verify user ages.
This does not look like a hill that even Democrats will die on.

All the Democratic justices dissented and rightfully so.

I will deny you an edit function, or any other modern feature of a social interactive website. But the porn, you will be able to see that. Except sometimes you will have to click on the link because I cannot enable the thumbnail to be presented as this website operates on Wordpress 2000.

DL and age verification. Yes I think we could all make a good argument as to why children should never be able to post and read on the DL. A compelling argument.
Pictures of pussies,, dicks, fucking, sucking, stories of great weekends of PnP and no condoms.
Adults only, bitches.

by Anonymous | reply 14 | June 27, 2025 3:51 PM |
It's laughable that the SCOTUS thinks this will have any effect on keeping children from viewing pron. The only thing age verification does is put your credentials on the internet for thieves, con men and criminals to exploit... and with Elon stealing all of our data, Palantir creating a massive database of every American, and now the SCOTUS chipping away at the last aspects of our privacy, you'd be a fool to provide a direct and verifiable link between yourself and whatever pron site you're stupid enough to give it to.
If there has ever been a case exposing the SCOTUS for the luddites that they are, this is it.
by Anonymous | reply 16 | June 27, 2025 3:56 PM |
From Kagan's masterful dissent: The majority tries to escape that conclusion with a maneuver found nowhere in the world of First Amendment doctrine. It turns out, the majority says, that the First Amendment only “partially protects” the speech in question: The “speech is unprotected to the extent the State seeks only to verify age.” Ante, at 18, 29, n. 12 (emphasis deleted); see ante, at 28 (the speech is “unprotected to the extent that the State imposes only an age-verification requirement”). Meaning, the speech is unprotected to the extent that the State is imposing the very burden under review. Or said another way, the right of adults to view the speech has the burden of age verification built right in. That is convenient, if altogether circular. In the end, the majority’s analysis reduces to this: Requiring age verification does not directly burden adults’ speech rights because adults have no right to be free from the burden of age verification. Gerrymander the right to incorporate the burden, and the critical conclusion follows. If only other First Amendment cases were so easy!

Another issue not to die on. Dems could have supported it, lost little if any support and came across as family friendly. Of course , it’s all stupid and meaningless but so what.

So you want the Dems to be just like the GOP, R19? And then what... you're screaming "THE PARTIES ALL THE SAME!"

Democrat voters already support this.
by Anonymous | reply 21 | June 27, 2025 4:09 PM |
The effect of this ruling is that it makes porn even more desirable and sought out. When you tell people they cannot watch something, that's what they want to watch. The SCOTUS did pornographers and VPN companies a great service this morning; making their product harder to get = increased desire to get it = more profit in porn.
by Anonymous | reply 22 | June 27, 2025 4:09 PM |

It is irrelevant to the vast majority of people, including the vast majority of Democrats. It would have been stupid for the party to take an official position because either way it is a loser. This is not the First Amendment hill to die upon. Let the Republicans [italic]own[/italic] this issue.. You think young men are going to like this ruling? Why give them another reason to hate the Dems?

[quote]For those living in red states, sorry about it. Use your imagination.
Not as simple as that.
Mobile carriers, like AT&T, Verizon, T-Mobile, etc., route through data centers to provide internet access. It varies by individual carrier, but AT&T frequently routes traffic based on load through a data center in Texas. This has the effect of showing your IP address as being in Texas, thus susceptible to the age verification laws. If you run a speed test, like Ookla, you can see the "nearest server" to which it connects for the test will often be in some random city nowhere near your physical location. Wherever that "nearest" server is is where the site will likely view your being.
You have no control over this. You cannot "reset" or reboot. It's purely controlled by the carrier and whatever load spreading algorithm they use to balance traffic.

The other negative is that this channels pron traffic to shadier places on the internet. Pornhub, etc comply because they can be tracked down, sued and held accountable. But childfuckfest.zimbabwe.com couldn’t care less. Those type of awful places of the internet are still readily available in red states and always will be. Awesome.

R33, wait until states go after the communications providers, requiring them to enable child age verification
by Anonymous | reply 34 | June 27, 2025 5:12 PM |
I'm of two minds on this - I don't want another place collecting my personal info or being able to identify what I watch.
On the other hand - make phones for under 18 audiences that restrict all of this. You can install blockers on PCs - I'm sure they can do the same on phones.
That's really the solution - stop giving adult phones to kids. They need to have restrictions for all sorts of things and be monitored by the parents.
The issue isn't just porn.
by Anonymous | reply 35 | June 27, 2025 5:17 PM |
R35, you’re basically asking for parents to parent. That is too much to ask.
by Anonymous | reply 36 | June 27, 2025 5:18 PM |
R36 - actually I think the world is stacked against parenting with everything online - how do you control it?
Under 18 phones - I really think that's a good solution. You can set how much time per day they are on certain apps, block content and see if creeps are chatting with them.
by Anonymous | reply 37 | June 27, 2025 5:40 PM |
r33 that's a good point. If you're going to watch porn online it's best to stick to sites like Pornhub, Xhamster, Redtube etc. because they screen all of their content so everything is perfectly legal and you won't risk stumbling onto something that's questionable. Doing random searches for porn is never a good idea because you don't know WTF you might stumble upon.
by Anonymous | reply 38 | June 27, 2025 5:48 PM |
R10 good news but mixed. The provisions stand based on the recommendations of a federal advisory committee saying these provisions are important and should be available and for free..
But they make it clear that the advisory committee is strictly advisory and its recommendations can be rejected by the Sec HHS
Sounds like the provisions stand as long as the fed govt wants them to stand.
In other news the SC ruled that kids can be pulled from class by parents in order to avoid gay day or gay subjects like drag queen story time. etc etc etc.

Unquestionably? As in fact or what people may believe? Or what people care bout?
Tobacco smoking was attacked not by the govt or congress or the medical community as much as it was attacked originally by anti smoking activists starting in the 1960s. And they worked the politics and the laws hard.
The US fed govt aka Surgeon General did not declare nicotine addictive until 1988. The science was Important despite the fact that the vast majority of the country have never seen a SG Report on smoking , but the hate of the activists that’s why we have a non smoking country today.

It's not like those porn actresses are going to line up to get fucked by a bunch of losers who can't get a date without threats, coercion and lies.
