Zohran Mamdani Proposes Taxing 'Whiter Neighborhoods' in NYC
New York City's Democratic mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani has said he wants to "shift the tax burden" to "richer and whiter neighborhoods" if he secures election in November.
A housing policy document on Mamdani's official website includes a pledge to "shift the tax burden from overtaxed homeowners in the outer boroughs to more expensive homes in richer and whiter neighborhoods."

This response reminds me of when reactionaries on the right make bigoted and hateful comments about gays and then go "I'm not homophobic because I'm not actually scared of gays". Come on--they know exactly what they are doing and saying. They are just trying to create a smokescreen for their ignorance. And they are doing the same thing with their comments about Zohran. There is a lot you can criticize about Zohran without having to resort to racism.

It is factually correct that NYC’s assessment methodology treats different dwellings differently, with the by-product being many poorer neighborhoods pay a higher rate than wealthy neighborhoods. It’s a long-standing issue. In the Bloomberg era some changes to the methodology weee made, but a disparity still exists.

R11 is correct. But though it is indeed the whiter neighborhoods that benefit, it's still a whopper of a racializing gaffe to say "whiter" right in there when talking about which neighborhoods he wants to increase taxes. He will need to disavow that bit, and edit the document.

Tellingly, Mamdani didn’t just clean up in persuasion. He also activated an entirely new electorate that was previously unfathomable to New York City politicos. That could have important implications for Democrats, who struggled to both turn out and win over less-engaged voters in 2024.

He’s not elected mayor yet, and he will receive formidable opposition before the general election. If elected, implementing some of his major policies will encounter considerable and aggressive resistance. Free bus service, rent freezes, etc., all cost $$$; and the money has to come from somewhere. Taxing upscale, predominantly white neighborhoods, and having suspicions from the Jewish community, are factors that will not render him an easy ride going forward. People who own condo units and cooperative apartments pay property taxes, R47. For coop owners is less direct, but they pay a portion of the overall building’s real estate taxes via their maintenance payments.

That ONE poster who keeps repeating himself seems to think that because Mamdani WANTS to do it, it means it’s gonna get done. The one poster must be very new to the adult world. Girl, no one is saying his policies are horrible ideas and shouldn’t be done. We’ve all just gotten past the idea that just because a politician (which he is) wants to do something that it actually means it’s gonna get done. And what he is promising is so improbable, and he’s so inexperienced, most of us know it will never happen. You sound like you’re just rounding the second bend of your first time around the block.

Roughly 50% of NYC revenue comes from property tax. ~80% of that is commercial property. Commercial property is subject to a completely separate assessment methodology.
So what that foreigners own commercial real estate—it’s common in every city in the US. The “Absentee” owners you are referring to are limited to a very particular segment of the residential market in NYC.

Social media has, but not the liberal legacy media.
You guys bitch about Republicans having Fox News.
But Democrats have had ABC, NBC, CBS, MSNBC, and CNN on their side, not to mention Hollywood and print media.
That's why conservatives turned to the internet/social media, which they have perfected and is now king, whereas legacy media is dying.
Which liberals resent, because they don't want conservatives to have a voice, never mind an influential one.

They were terrified. Terrified of saying drop the loser trans talk. Terrified of saying “they/them” is killing the party. Terrified of saying totally open borders are, indeed, a really bad idea. Terrified of saying policing language and cancelling people for social faux pas from 40 years ago are a really, really bad ideas.

Actually, r133, they were terrified of responding to the loser trans talk or the anti trans ad. Some dumb bitch told them that "rising above" was the way to go, which pretty much never works. Never rise above, change the subject to the rich, their constant nonsense and bullshit, and the need to stop being terrified of taxing them or even of not putting their whims and "needs" first and foremost. Mamdani has the better idea: go after the fuckers (oops, there's that word again) and nail them for their chronic, useless selfishness and greed. r133, that's a bunch of bullshit. Taking a look at one issue only, the borders were not wide open in the last two years of Biden's term ,and during his first few years, there was a rebound effect of Trump's illegal behavior in not allowing people to apply for asylum - a right guaranteed by AMERICAN law ever since we became signatories to the Geneva Convention on Refugees. If you read the linked article, you'll get some notion of the complexity of the situation, but, long story short, under the Biden administration, 3.7 million people were returned back to the border. Biden allowed about 3.2 million to enter as legal asylum seekers. Hardly the 10 million widely used as a figure by Republican politicians.
