Who eats at Subway?

They have to make the worst subs of any place anywhere. I am bewildered by its success.

So who here goes there and for what? Please explain!

by Anonymousreply 49June 28, 2025 2:29 AM

Two words, OP: White. Trash.

by Anonymousreply 1June 27, 2025 4:04 AM

R1, even whatchamacallit, Jersey Mikes, is much better.

by Anonymousreply 2June 27, 2025 4:06 AM

by Anonymousreply 3June 27, 2025 4:09 AM

I’m waiting for Jared’s triumphant return.

by Anonymousreply 4June 27, 2025 4:10 AM

Only when I'm driving across the country and there isn't another food option for the next 150 miles.

by Anonymousreply 5June 27, 2025 4:11 AM

I like their tuna on wheat with lots of vinegar and black pepper. That's all I like there.

by Anonymousreply 6June 27, 2025 4:14 AM

I've been a vegetarian for most of my life, so I obviously always ordered their veggie sub whenever I went there. It is very hit-and-miss for me and whether or not I find it palatable depends on the quality of the vegetables. A lot of the time, they're terrible. The bread also varies. It seems the quality really took a nosedive in the last ten years and is no longer consistent. Occasionally I'll get a hankering for it, but I'm usually disappointed. Their chocolate chip cookies though are unmatched.

by Anonymousreply 7June 27, 2025 4:17 AM

I used to, but they've gone down in quality while raising prices (but still better than Jersey Mike's). I prefer Firehouse Subs.

by Anonymousreply 8June 27, 2025 4:19 AM

90% bread and 10% protein/veggies.

by Anonymousreply 9June 27, 2025 4:21 AM

I like it fine. I've been eating there since the 80s so it's familiar comfort food. I won't argue there aren't better sub sandwiches out there but it's kind of like McDonald's: you can get a better burger just about anywhere but sometimes you just want McDonald's.

My biggest issue is their prices have gotten ridiculous. It used to be a cheap place to grab lunch but the $5 footlongs are long in the past. Most footlongs are now $13-$15 bucks or more. I completely understand not wanting to pay that price for Subway.

by Anonymousreply 10June 27, 2025 4:37 AM

Yeah, they're surprisingly expensive, r10. I went there a couple months ago and paid $15 for a pretty generic turkey breast footlong.

I read somewhere that the franchise fee for Subway is very low compared to the other fast food chains. Maybe that's why we see so many of them.

by Anonymousreply 11June 27, 2025 4:50 AM

I LOVE SUBWAY!

by Anonymousreply 12June 27, 2025 4:52 AM

I live in a food desert. There was a Subway a mile or two away, where I would order a tuna fish sandwich. They demolished the Subway location, so now it's several more miles to the next location, so I'm done with them.

by Anonymousreply 13June 27, 2025 5:15 AM

I miss Blimpie's. I liked the Blimpie Best and their seafood sub.

by Anonymousreply 14June 27, 2025 5:24 AM

The bread (such as it is) has about 398 different ingredients and the "cheese" is, well, what is it?

I'm in Ireland. As with a lot of US fast-food chains, it was popular when it first arrived here (especially with college students), but that popularity faded once the novelty wore off. At least they could use local, Irish cheese and meats but they have it all shipped in from the US.

by Anonymousreply 15June 27, 2025 5:27 AM

The "American cheese" ostensibly concocted by Subway in a laboratory somewhere is, despite being a terrible product (I'm sure), DELICIOUS.

by Anonymousreply 16June 27, 2025 5:52 AM

The poors

by Anonymousreply 17June 27, 2025 5:53 AM

Weight loss pedophiles

by Anonymousreply 18June 27, 2025 5:55 AM

I miss Blimpie's too, r14. Apparently the chain isn't completely dead but I haven't seen a store in years. Jersey Mike's is kind of similar in that they slice the meats and cheeses fresh in front of you but they don't taste anything like Blimpie

I miss Quiznos as well, though apparently they also still exist in some capacity. A shame the company was so mismanaged and screwed all the franchisees. Firehouse Subs may be a good substitute since they toast their sandwiches like Quiznos but there aren't any convenient to me

I also loved Which Wich but they closed all the locations in my area and I never see them when traveling

Jimmie John's is pretty good but I don't like supporting the crazy rightwing owner

by Anonymousreply 19June 27, 2025 5:57 AM

Same story. Used to love the humongous tuna subs with olives and brick cheese but then the quality took a nose dive.

by Anonymousreply 20June 27, 2025 10:39 AM

Thank God I have delis aroubd that make proper heroes with real, fresh ingredients.

by Anonymousreply 21June 27, 2025 10:53 AM

We have those too, R21. I love Subway for what it is.

by Anonymousreply 22June 27, 2025 11:02 AM

I don’t mind it. It’s good once in a while.

by Anonymousreply 23June 27, 2025 11:03 AM

R8- Saying Subway is better than Jersey Mike’s Subs is like saying that a Dollar General is better than Whole Foods.

by Anonymousreply 24June 27, 2025 11:22 AM

The quality of the bread at Subway collapsed about 10:years ago. The only other benefit was the price. If they’re no longer cheap, I can’t imagine anyone going there unless desperate.

I like Jersey Mike’s.

by Anonymousreply 25June 27, 2025 11:37 AM

When Subway came into my area, it was about 45 years ago. They opened within a few blocks of every college campus in my city and were popular with the college kids and staff. I would go occasionally, in the summer or winter, when the colleges were on 'break'. Never impressed. (And this was in my late teens / early 20s). I've always returned to the local 'mom and pop' sandwich shops which opened in the 50s and 60s, which have thrived for decades, and offer the best quality of sandwiches.

I can't recall the last time I was in a Subway. Slowly, they all closed as the property values skyrocketed around the campuses, and they couldn't cover costs with their cheap sandwiches. The original locations near the college campuses are now all Starbucks, or Chipotles.

by Anonymousreply 26June 27, 2025 12:03 PM

Same as r5. When I'm driving long distances and I'm too hungry to care I'll stop at a Subway because they're everywhere. Not great, but it's tolerable.

by Anonymousreply 27June 27, 2025 3:45 PM

I miss the old greasy hot subs of my youth. Steak, sauteed onions and peppers, melted cheese, soggy bread.

by Anonymousreply 28June 27, 2025 3:53 PM

Its fine, but there are better places if you have the option (Jersey Mike's, FIrehouse, etc.)

[quote]90% bread and 10% protein/veggies.

This is my major gripe. I might as well go to Kroger, but a loaf of Wonderbread and eat it. At least Wonderbread is like $2-$3

by Anonymousreply 29June 27, 2025 3:57 PM

I get the steak&cheese every once in a while. I once forgot my wallet there and they kept it for me so I’m loyal to one Subway.

They’re jalapeños are bland and their tomatoes are just as tasteless.

by Anonymousreply 30June 27, 2025 4:02 PM

^their

by Anonymousreply 31June 27, 2025 4:03 PM

Slimy, sweaty deli meats. A step below Oscar Meyer. 🤮

by Anonymousreply 32June 27, 2025 4:07 PM

I ate at Subway exactly twice, both times when I was riding my motorcycle and needed a break.

But where I come from in PA, there are bunches of little family places where they make subs to die for, so even living in FL, I don't eat subs. Eating these inferior subs would make my mouth cry.

I'm attaching a pic from the sub/pizza place I go to whenever I'm home. Yummy!

They dont use butter and look at you like its odd to want yoir bread buttered.

by Anonymousreply 34June 27, 2025 5:06 PM

Subway is utter garbage and I am equally mystified at how many there are. Owned today by Roark Capital (yes, actually named after Ayn Rand’s “The Fountainhead”) which owns so much awfulness in the restaurant industry these days. Connect the dots of quality from Subway to Sonic to Arby’s to Hardee’s to Buffalo Wild Wings… you get the point. They just bought Dave’s Hot Chicken, so watch them begin to degrade.

Jimmy John’s isn’t far from Subway though. Another garbage pit.

Jersey Mike’s is just fine to me though.

by Anonymousreply 35June 27, 2025 5:15 PM

Between the:

Jared shit

Giving dog killer Michael Vick sportsman of the year award

and their shitty subs

I have eaten there once. It all left a bad taste

by Anonymousreply 36June 27, 2025 5:23 PM

Also, Jimmy John’s is another quality gem in the Roark Capital portfolio of jewels that litter our countryside.

by Anonymousreply 37June 27, 2025 5:25 PM

“I have eaten there once. It all left a bad taste”

Snacking on your girlfriend’s vag in the middle of our dining room WOULD leave a bad taste. But that’s on you. 🌮 👅

by Anonymousreply 38June 27, 2025 5:25 PM

Jimmy John's is disgusting and much worse, I agree. Last time I ate there my stomach got torn up. Blech.

by Anonymousreply 39June 27, 2025 5:33 PM

I honestly will never, ever understand why people pay so much money for something that is ***so easy*** to make at home for far less money.

A sandwich, small bag of chips and a drink can be easily brought from home. Other stuff, sure, I get it. But I'll never in a million years understand how people spend so much at Subway or Jimmy John's, etc.

by Anonymousreply 40June 27, 2025 5:37 PM

[quote]I honestly will never, ever understand why people pay so much money for something that is ***so easy*** to make at home for far less money.

Because not all of us are fucking shut-ins and we're fucking busy and due to work/travel aren't at home.

by Anonymousreply 41June 27, 2025 5:52 PM

Do the math on making a sub at home. Unless you have lettuce/lunch meat (that hasn't reached its short shelf life), other veggie toppings, sauces, sub rolls, etc., you're going to spend more at home. If you plan on eating it at home for more than a day or two ok, otherwise find a place that'll do it for you and will taste decent. I ordered a Jersey Mike's Turkey Sub on a road trip one time and thought it was absolutely delicious. I can't get the slice right some of those sub shops do.

by Anonymousreply 42June 27, 2025 7:54 PM

All those awful sauces...

A bit of good Dijon is all I need.

by Anonymousreply 43June 27, 2025 8:05 PM

Their roast beef is as bad as Arby’s.

As R42 wisely advised, I invest in about a pound of sliced beef, some Giardiniera, hoagie buns, and cheap steak fries (for non-US people steak fries are just wider, fatter french fries that collapse and go limp before you eat them). A vinegar slaw on the side or dill pickles complete the meal. Also, this is one of the few times Midwesterners are allowed to use catsup.

The problem is that it’s about $35.00 and you are committing to eating it all while the jar of giardiniera is fresh. These peppers aren’t preserved like pickles; giardiniera vegetables go off within a week.

by Anonymousreply 44June 27, 2025 8:08 PM

We didnt get any Subways near me until they were featured on The Biggest Loser. Back then, it was somewhat healthy; I think it was started by some doctors. Once they sold it, the quality went downhill quickly. It's very telling that the closest Subway to me is in a rundown, old Walmart. That WM has no fresh foods and you have to dodge those Brute garbage cans because the roof leaks.

I, too, grew up on Blimpie's and miss them. There's still one by me but their cut colds are pre-sliced so I stay away. I do like JM's. I've never had a fresh sandwich from JJ's. We used to order them for meetings but they don't have the oil, vinegar, and spices on them. Their red wine vinegar is severly watered down.

by Anonymousreply 45June 27, 2025 8:15 PM

I ate Subway from about 1968 to the late 70s when I lived in CT. The subs were great for the money. . [quote]Do the math on making a sub at home. Unless you have lettuce/lunch meat (that hasn't reached its short shelf life), other veggie toppings, sauces, sub rolls, etc., you're going to spend more at home.

I don't understand those of you who say this. Apparently, you can't do math. You buy a half dozen rolls, and good deli meat. Don't buy it pre-sliced, go to the deli-counter to get it, along with the cheese. Buy some tomatoes on the vine, or something that you don't need to buy too many of, and a head of lettuce. Roasted peppers, jalapenos, even fresh serrano peppers last. Tuna? Egg salad?

Use one roll and freeze the rest. All the rest of the items will last more than a week. Maybe if you buy some roast beef and/or turkey, you might have to make those earlier in the week. Ham, salami, etc last for a good while.

Your math may include convenience. If so, you really can't complain about the prices and quality.

WHET to Togos and Quizno's?

by Anonymousreply 47June 27, 2025 11:43 PM

I thought Togos was out of business too but we had catering at work a few weeks back and it was Togos. It was actually pretty good

Quizno's still exists as well but seems to be mostly in malls, gas stations or business parks

by Anonymousreply 48June 28, 2025 1:35 AM

Togos was an almost daily stop in college, on Bancroft Way across from the backside of Sproul Hall. Cheap and filling. Of course, that was 40 years ago.
