Let’s be and quote Arthur (1981)

Hobson: Thank you for a memorable afternoon, usually one must go to a bowling alley to meet a woman of your stature.

I’m Liza’s busted face and googly eyes

by Anonymousreply 1June 27, 2025 3:33 AM

If OP's new approach works out, I vote we name these threads "B&Qs"

by Anonymousreply 2June 27, 2025 3:52 AM

Arthur: Hobson? Hobson: Yes. Arthur: Do you know what I'm going to do? Hobson: No, I don't. Arthur: I'm going to take a bath. Hobson: I'll alert the media. Arthur: [rises] Do you want to run my bath for me? Hobson: That's what I live for. [Arthur exits] Hobson: Perhaps you would like me to come in there and wash your dick for you, you little shit.

by Anonymousreply 3June 27, 2025 3:54 AM

Has there been a death in your family? This is funny stuff!

by Anonymousreply 4June 27, 2025 3:56 AM

Sometimes I just think funny things.

by Anonymousreply 5June 27, 2025 4:21 AM

The perfection of “I’ll alert the media.” - it can’t be beat. It’s iconic, never stale and can be used in so many occasions.

Unlike…….Liza with a Yech.

She ruined every scene she was in. Who cast her? Liza co-starring in “ Arthur” opened Pandora’s Box spewing hideous nepo babies for decades ever after. I’m looking at you, [ insert name].

by Anonymousreply 6June 27, 2025 4:27 AM

"Give her friend $100, she came in second!"

by Anonymousreply 7June 27, 2025 5:30 AM

Hobson: Thrilling to meet you, Gloria.

Gloria: Hi.

Hobson: Yes... You obviously have a wonderful economy with words, Gloria. I look forward to your next syllable with great eagerness.

by Anonymousreply 8June 27, 2025 5:30 AM

"SLUT?!!"

by Anonymousreply 9June 27, 2025 5:49 AM

Hobson: "May I come in? If you and your undershirt will walk two paces backwards, I could enter this dwelling."

by Anonymousreply 10June 27, 2025 6:09 AM

I'm St. Bartholomew's Church on Park Avenue.

by Anonymousreply 11June 27, 2025 6:19 AM

I can’t remember the exact quote but Hobson asked Liza’s father for an aspirin and said, “You’ll find it in the bathroom medicine cabinet behind the untouched shaving cream.”

by Anonymousreply 12June 27, 2025 6:25 AM

Hobson: "Poor drunks do not find love, Arthur. Poor drunks have very few teeth, they urinate outdoors, they freeze to death in summer. I can't bear to think of you that way."

by Anonymousreply 13June 27, 2025 6:29 AM

“He's taking the knife out of the cheese. You think he wants some cheese?”

by Anonymousreply 14June 27, 2025 6:54 AM

Fucking hell. What trash.

by Anonymousreply 15June 27, 2025 7:08 AM

Gielgud was absolutely superlative in Arthur. A master of delivery with every single line, every gesture, every facial expression.

by Anonymousreply 16June 27, 2025 7:20 AM

Burt Johnson: When I was 11 years old, I KILLED a man.

Arthur: ... Well, when you're 11, you probably don't even know there's a law against that.

by Anonymousreply 17June 27, 2025 7:24 AM

This thread inspired me to rewatch Arthur; I still love it, especially John Gielgud (he didn't win that Oscar for nothing), but the biggest flaw is Liza's casting.

I don't know who should have been cast in her place...

by Anonymousreply 18June 27, 2025 7:33 AM

EAT YOUR ROLL!

by Anonymousreply 19June 27, 2025 8:04 AM

My father raped me when I was twelve

by Anonymousreply 20June 27, 2025 9:04 AM

Oh, I need to watch this. I don’t think I’ve seen it since the 80s. I don’t remember Liza being bad…

Wasn’t there a remake?

by Anonymousreply 21June 27, 2025 9:48 AM

Gielgud and Dudley Moore were perfection in their roles, and I agree with the other posters about Liza. She wasn’t bad, but you don’t cast LIZA! as a snack shop girl.

by Anonymousreply 22June 27, 2025 10:21 AM

Did the lights go off!?

by Anonymousreply 23June 27, 2025 10:36 AM

Guess I’m the odd one here but I thought Liza was wonderful in the film and really enjoyed her performance.

I also loved the scene between Arthur and the old guy who answered the door at Bert’s mansion. The old guy was dull as fuck and Arthur, drunk off his ass, said “Didn’t you used to be a stand-up comic?”

by Anonymousreply 24June 27, 2025 10:58 AM

Datalounge LOVES the Hobson quotes because the character was a bitchy homosexual.

by Anonymousreply 25June 27, 2025 11:29 AM

Trust me, Chester you don’t need the badge. No customer would wear that jacket.

by Anonymousreply 26June 27, 2025 12:07 PM

“Steal something casual.”

by Anonymousreply 27June 27, 2025 12:08 PM

I see no need in prolonging this conversation, unless you plan on knocking over a fruit stand later in the afternoon. Good luck in prison.

by Anonymousreply 28June 27, 2025 12:11 PM

Minnelli and Gielgud had great rapport. They were absolutely charming together, especially the scene where he tells her to go to the engagement party.

by Anonymousreply 29June 27, 2025 12:14 PM

Susan (Jill Eikenberry): A real woman could stop you from drinking.

Arthur: It'd have to be a real BIG woman.

by Anonymousreply 30June 27, 2025 2:56 PM

Not surprising that prissy snobby DLers would love Hobson so much.

by Anonymousreply 31June 27, 2025 5:21 PM

I didn't get caught between the moon and New York City, I got stuck!

by Anonymousreply 32June 27, 2025 10:23 PM

Someone start a thread about Arthur 2: On The Rocks!

by Anonymousreply 33June 28, 2025 1:41 AM

Gielgud loved Liza and felt that she deserved more accolades for the role..

by Anonymousreply 34June 28, 2025 1:44 AM

I love this scene:

Hobson: Would you remove your helmet, please?

Arthur: Why?

Hobson: Please.

[Arthur hands him his helmet]

Hobson: Thank you. Now your goggles.

Arthur: Why?

Hobson: Please.

[Arthur hands him his goggles]

Hobson: Thank you.

[slaps him across the face repeatedly]

Hobson: You spoiled little bastard! You're a man who has everything, haven't you, but that's not enough. You feel unloved, Arthur, welcome to the world. Everyone is unloved. Now stop feeling sorry for yourself. And incidentally, I love you.

I’m Bergdorf Goodman.

by Anonymousreply 38June 28, 2025 5:20 AM

"pardon me! Oh, you're a hedge!"

by Anonymousreply 39June 28, 2025 5:29 AM

"Where's the rest of this moose?'

by Anonymousreply 40June 28, 2025 5:30 AM

Anyone want some cheese?

by Anonymousreply 41June 28, 2025 5:53 AM

This is a tough room! (To the moose head): I don't have to tell YOU that. (To Burt): You must have hated this moose.

by Anonymousreply 42June 28, 2025 3:37 PM

I think that moose scene made me laugh more than any other.

by Anonymousreply 43June 28, 2025 9:05 PM

I'm Geraldine Fitzgerald and you forgot I was in this movie because Dudley Moore, Liza Minelli, and Sir John Gielgud dominate it.

by Anonymousreply 44June 28, 2025 9:12 PM

I'm the lesser known "Hobson!" film series, where John Gielgud plays a Phillip Marlowe-esque butler solving crimes in a most dignified manner during Arthur's many blackout drunks

by Anonymousreply 45June 28, 2025 10:17 PM

Dorothy Zbornak: What is there to be ashamed of? You have a medical problem. Was Betty Ford embarrassed? Was... was Liza Minnelli embarrassed?

Sophia Petrillo: She should have been. Did you see "Arthur 2"?

by Anonymousreply 46June 28, 2025 10:27 PM

This thread sent me to Wikipedia to look up the cast.

Apparently Gilda Radner was considered for Linda. I wonder if she would have been a better match with Dudley Moore.

by Anonymousreply 47June 28, 2025 10:48 PM

R47, Honestly, Liza was perfect for the role as she matched Dudley’s energy.

by Anonymousreply 48June 28, 2025 10:50 PM

I’m Kathy Bates. I’m one of the best parts about the sequel.

by Anonymousreply 49June 29, 2025 1:08 AM

Didn't they remake Arthur with that unwashed STD Russell Brand? I think I saw that movie but can't remember anything about it.

by Anonymousreply 50June 29, 2025 4:28 AM

What's with the primary colour palette.on Liza? She's clownish and brash enough without that wardrobe.
