Acclaimed journalist and tasked by LBJ to discredit Martin Luther King Jr.

This one made me gasp out loud.
I loved the timbre of his voice.
May he rest in peace.

He’s following his bliss.

More on Saint Moyers, from the Wikipedia article (sources are cited there):
[Quote] Moyers also sought information from the FBI on the sexual preferences of White House staff members, most notably Jack Valenti. Moyers indicated his memory was unclear on why Johnson directed him to request such information, "but that he may have been simply looking for details of allegations first brought to the president by Hoover."
[Quote] Under the direction of President Johnson, Moyers gave J Edgar Hoover the go-ahead to discredit Martin Luther King, played a part in the wiretapping of King, discouraged the American embassy in Oslo from assisting King on his Nobel Peace Prize trip, and worked to prevent King from challenging the all-white Mississippi delegation to the 1964 Democratic National Convention.

R5, it's called politics.
by Anonymous | reply 6 | June 26, 2025 8:56 PM |
He didn’t like gays much when he worked in the White House but came around and became a big supporter years later.
Loved his show on PBS. His interviews with Campbell are classic

Thanks to R5 I just learned about what Moyers tried to do to MLK Jr.
I had no idea. We '80s kids / GenXers just thought of him as a credentialed, well-regarded, conventional white-male-American-journalist guy. He did superb work on PBS Frontline in the '90s and his other programs in the 2000s.

Id, ego and superego.

You’re welcome r8. I’m not saying he should be burned in effigy or anything, just that there’s food and bad in everyone, so we should not discuss his life in worshipful tones.
R6, is this called politics too?
by Anonymous | reply 10 | June 26, 2025 9:10 PM |
good and bad ^^^
by Anonymous | reply 11 | June 26, 2025 9:11 PM |
Yes, he did some less than honorable things when he was in politics but that was society at that time.
He more than made up for it with his dazzling career as a journalist

Did Barbara Walters like him ? Was he a bully to her like Harry Reasoner ?

Who at such levels of governmental responsibility in this pre-Stonewall era did? Certainly not the Kennedys.

He was also deputy director of the Peace Corps under its original director, Sargent Shriver.
by Anonymous | reply 15 | June 26, 2025 9:51 PM |
I wonder if his death will merit front page coverage in the print edition of tomorrow's Times.
by Anonymous | reply 16 | June 26, 2025 10:02 PM |
R10, what the hell does that have to do with Bill Moyer? Go find a cross and climb on up.
by Anonymous | reply 17 | June 26, 2025 10:48 PM |
First Bobby Sherman...now Bill Moyers. They're all dropping.
by Anonymous | reply 18 | June 26, 2025 10:56 PM |
Loved to hear him speak. His voice was comforting

I am a long time admirer of Bill Moyers and his long history of journalism, helping establish the Peace Corps, his stellar programs with PBS, and his overall integrity. Rest in peace sweet prince.

He commented in 2011: America being taken over by ‘’Organized Wealth’’ He’s probably glad to go and leave us with the fascists.

His obituary is on the front page of the print edition of the Saturday NYT.
by Anonymous | reply 31 | June 28, 2025 3:26 PM |
A pity that he never consented to be interviewed by Robert Caro.
by Anonymous | reply 32 | June 28, 2025 3:31 PM |
He was born Billy Don Moyers.
by Anonymous | reply 33 | June 28, 2025 3:32 PM |
He had a "Walter Cronkite" -like affect. Calm, compassionate, smart, and credible. That kind of public voice really no longer exists in the American Public Sphere. Rest in Peace.
