Denis Villeneuve to direct the next Bond film.

I don’t get it. He’s such a dull director.

He’s a great director.

With a decent script and solid Bond, he might be able to renew the franchise, which hasn’t seen a decent entry since Skyfall.

by Anonymousreply 1June 26, 2025 2:16 AM

His face looks like it’s closing up

by Anonymousreply 2June 26, 2025 2:48 AM

He's capable but can be so damned boring. So far he has not lived up to his early promise.

by Anonymousreply 3June 26, 2025 2:58 AM

Seems like the new producers are making the safe yet dull decision of continuing the trend in recent Bond films. That is, fashioning Nolan-adjacent prestigious action-dramas helmed by heavy-hitters that may, if they're lucky, earn a few technical Oscar noms. But I'm not sure that's wise. I think Spectre proved that even with a semi-auteur like Sam Mendes behind the camera, if you don't have the right script, you're fucked.

by Anonymousreply 4June 26, 2025 3:04 AM

Hope he gets along with Billy Porter.

by Anonymousreply 5June 26, 2025 3:15 AM

We put our name in to direct — the fact that we didn’t get it is a clear example of transphobia! Literal violence!

This must mean we're very close finally to having the next actor to play James Bond announced.

And about time, too.

by Anonymousreply 7June 26, 2025 3:18 AM

This is a boomer franchise.

by Anonymousreply 8June 26, 2025 3:32 AM

He looks like Dr. Zizmor!

IYKYK

by Anonymousreply 9June 26, 2025 3:35 AM

This is actually pretty shocking and gutsy considering the other directors that showed interest.

Villeneuve is arguably the most autistic director next to Christopher Nolan. His movies are about isolation, and his characters are extremely cold. I love them to death, but it’s not for everyone. I would have assumed they were going in the opposite direction from Craig, and going for a more populist, martini-swirling Bond.

No one cares.

by Anonymousreply 11June 26, 2025 10:06 AM

He’s cheap. That’s what it comes down to. It’s Amazon.

by Anonymousreply 12June 26, 2025 10:06 AM

R12 in what universe is Denis Villeneuve cheap

Blade Runner 2049 cost $150/$185mm and lost a ton of money

by Anonymousreply 13June 26, 2025 10:09 AM

So the new Bond will probably be a taciturn Aspie.

Can I suggest one?

by Anonymousreply 17June 26, 2025 2:27 PM

This will be a pretentious snooze fest, just like all of his previous movies. Lots of stark cinematography and production design with no soul or warmth. It's not what Bond is about. Bond is about glitz and glamour, with a little camp thrown in.

by Anonymousreply 18June 26, 2025 2:42 PM

I don't care for this decision. His films are well-made but incredibly boring and way too serious. He's all wrong for Bond.

by Anonymousreply 19June 26, 2025 2:56 PM

Ridiculous

by Anonymousreply 20June 26, 2025 3:07 PM

Keep in mind he says he is a life-long fan of the Bond films . I’m sure he will adjust his typical style to the material and honor the heritage.

by Anonymousreply 21June 26, 2025 3:09 PM

Timmy IS Bond, James Bond.

by Anonymousreply 22June 26, 2025 3:17 PM

Yes Dune 2 was successful but its $715M gross was barely enough considering the $300M+ production and P&A costs.

by Anonymousreply 23June 26, 2025 3:21 PM

If he casts Zendaya as "Jamee Bond", then I am out.

by Anonymousreply 24June 26, 2025 4:14 PM

Autistic director? LOL

by Anonymousreply 25June 26, 2025 4:20 PM

I appreciate the comments here; while I find DV cold like the rest, I find Nolan much colder. Do you guys agree? I never feel anything in Nolan's films, where DV uses the visuals to push and pull the energies. DUNE 2 was terrific in that sense; but I agree we're kind of always at a distance from it.

What are the differences between Nolan and DV, in your view?

by Anonymousreply 26June 26, 2025 4:23 PM

Nolan is obsessed with time. Villeneuve is obsessed with visuals like a painter.

by Anonymousreply 27June 26, 2025 4:30 PM

I have not seen any of his films, but had Bezos wanted to make something of his Amazon Prime Video and MGM acquisition, what is he waiting for.

Were *quality* a watchword of Bezos, we would have seen some evidence, any evidence at all by now. But no. He's quite content to churn out mediocrity.

by Anonymousreply 28June 26, 2025 4:36 PM

I just hope he keeps his hands off the script. Like too many post-Cahiers directors, he clearly has contempt or apathy for the role of the screenwriter. And it shows.

"If I could've made movies without any dialogue, it would have been paradise. Dialogue for me belongs to theater or television. I'm not someone who remembers movies because of their lines."--Denis Villeneuve

by Anonymousreply 29June 26, 2025 4:42 PM

You don’t hire Villeneuve if you aspire to be mediocre. You may still get there, of course.

by Anonymousreply 30June 26, 2025 4:42 PM

His movies are well put together but they have no emotional core. That’s why some people find his movies boring.

They’re like Ming vases — elegant on the outside, hollow on the inside.

That said, who gives a fuck about this lame-ass franchise? And the idea that the Brits are superspies? Jesus fucking Christ what a joke that is after decades of the British secret services leaking like a sieve and being more of a liability than a benefit to the West.

by Anonymousreply 31June 26, 2025 4:52 PM

I thought Arrival was very moving.

by Anonymousreply 32June 26, 2025 5:53 PM

Get ready for overpraised mediocrity.

by Anonymousreply 33June 26, 2025 6:28 PM

It makes sense to go with a director like him when they're also switching actors playing Bond.

He'll bring a very different sensibiliity to the franchise just as they switched when Craig took over the role.

If it doesn't work, they'll be able to calibrate and shift in another direction with a clearer sense of what they need to change.

Worst idea - EVAH.

by Anonymousreply 36June 26, 2025 6:58 PM

How does he even get jobs? His films are boring and monotone and Blade Runner 2049 and Dune 1 were massive flops.

by Anonymousreply 37June 27, 2025 12:54 AM

God. They're not breaking out of the dreary-sad-hateful-dark trend, are they.

I suppose it will have to be Bond going - against orders - to save a thousand girls from a sex-slave ring on a tropical island off the coast of South America, and in they end it's the girls who save Bond and his love interest spurns him to turn the fortress into a school.

R21 He said that about Blade Runner and Dune and they were super boring artsy fartsy movies.

by Anonymousreply 40June 29, 2025 6:36 PM

R39 That’s the truth.

No one actually wants to be James Bond anymore.

I think actors today are cooling down to franchises because it really takes 10+ years out of your life and career.

Daniel Craig was definitely not happy towards the end of his run. He was 37 when he started and 53 when he ended.

I don’t think actors are finding that appealing anymore.

by Anonymousreply 41June 29, 2025 6:39 PM

Jonathan Bailey is the obvious choice, but the Broccolis would never approve it.

by Anonymousreply 43June 29, 2025 6:49 PM

I don’t think a proper James Bond film can be made in this time of “liberal” Hollywood.

Hollywood despises famous male action heroes.

by Anonymousreply 44June 29, 2025 6:52 PM

[QUOTE] I think actors today are cooling down to franchises because it really takes 10+ years out of your life and career.

All the more reason to stop holding onto these actors for decades. Bring them in for two or three films and then find another Bond. If it’s such a physically intensive and dangerous job then it would make sense that 007 agents frequently die or step down and get replaced.

by Anonymousreply 45June 29, 2025 6:54 PM

Tom Cruise seems to be doing well, R44.
