Please —Rutte was massaging his ego. Read up: they had Trump at the Royal Palace overnight, they pulled pomp out of their asses to show him a good time. Trump ate it all like a giant Happy Meal. It worked….he left thanking NATO and the Dutch.

Europe is facing a very real threat that if Putin is successful with his stooge Trump and they actually undermine NATO to the point that the US pulls out, they're all sitting ducks like Ukraine and World War III is right around the corner. On the one hand it's funny to watch them play Trump like a fiddle and see him fall for it, but, as R7 points out, this is a dystopian-hellscape level development. Heads of government are relying on crude flattery with a madman to save their citizens from a holocaust.

Even if it's because they are manipulating Trump, I thought it was nauseating the way Mark Rutte kissed Trump's ass this week.

Rutte also has a lot of nerve expecting every country to boost military spending to 5% of GDP -- that is basically a gift to the military-industrial complex and setting in motion a new arms race.

The EU loves it when Democrats are in power, because they know that Dems are unpatriotic and pushovers for Europeans and will do what they say, no questions asked.

Not so with Republicans, so they have to grovel instead, which I'm sure they resent.

The so-called NATO deal is no deal at all. The increase in NATO contributions by European allies does not have to be paid until 2035. No one has to pay it now.

Trump cannot negotiate himself out of a free lunch. He's a fucking moron and utterly useless.

Trump gets played on every single issue he touches. For example regarding tariffs, it was supposed to be 90 deals in 90 days. First of all, the notion of 90 trade deals is preposterous. Trade deals take years to complete. So what will Trump do seeing that the 90-day deadline is up by mid-July and there have been no deals completed in the past 75 days?

And by the way, Trump's fight with Harvard--remember that one? Yeah, that's over too because Harvard has stood up to Trump, and it has more lawyers on the case than Trump has boxes of Depends. Another defeat for useless Trump.

The necessity to explicitly appeal to Trump as a person, and, more generally, the personalization of politics and the disappearance of the institutional frameworks that used to characterize relations between politicians and countries, is worrying. This personalization of politics also extends to Xi and Putin, of course. Rutte's message also expresses a certain fear: fear of an unexpected turn of events, that Trump will turn his back on Europe altogether.

It’s a legitimate fear. So far, their strategy is working. They only have to wait it out. Good for them.

I had the misfortune to have to watch the interview with this guy on Newsmax; he was definitely stroking Trump's ego (among other things), but you could tell he was also trying to forward a stance about Russia. So it sounded like placating a gigantic baby while trying to push forward their position. Not pretty, but a girl's gotta do what girl's gotta do!

I fully agree with r20, whatever the stategy, Rutte’s message was nauseating, so much so that it had to be officially confirmed since it was so over the top and uncharacteristic of official messages.

Rutte himself is horrible, always running after Trump, including after the oval office scene with Zelensky. He also stood there smiling and saying nothing while Trump was going on about invading Greenland, which is NATO protected.
