“The Waltons”

Watching on MeTV. It’s the episode when the house catches fire only to rebuild it exactly as it was. TV shows love this trope like on “The Hogan Family” and “Cheers” where a big fire barely affects things in later episodes.

Watching the show now, John Boy was moody and rude. Mary Ellen and Erin were bad actors. Elizabeth needed her adenoids out. Jim Bob was inbred. Olivia and Grandma got annoyingly sanctimonious and Christian.

But at least the show was much less tragic than. “Little House”.

Ben was hawt. As a gayling I crushed on him.

Both Grandma and Grandpa Walton were homos IRL.

John Walmsley, as Jason, was a really bad actor. Too many of the kids lacked acting talent, which led to a really boring show. David W. Harper (Jim-Bob) turned into a giant ogre. I saw a recent cast reunion photo, and it looked like he was wearing a MAGA t-shirt that was stained and 3 sizes too small.

Yeah, of the kids only Richard Thomas could actually act and had a proper career.

Don’t get me started on Mary Ellen’s designer jeans and blow-dried feathered hair in later seasons.

MISS Michael Learned’s severe facelift midway through the whole thing wasn’t very Depression-era Appalachia.

Corabeth's pussy was dry as sawdust.

I loved the set. Was all that really on a backlot in LA? All the trees and dirt roads? When they say “backlot”, do they mean closer to the hills?

I loved the house though I doubt they’d have had electricity in the mountains in the 30s. Or maybe they did.

The show could have/should have ended with the episode when Grandma finally came home. It would have been a great finale and Richard Thomas had returned for a two-parter right before that episode. Instead, we got the really messy WW2 years and the defection/deaths of all the adults and boy did it lose its charm as it limped to the finish line.

G'nite Jimbob!

It should be called MehTV

Ralph Waite was one hot furry daddy with big 1970s hair.

R8, the house/facade was used in Gilmore Girls.

This episode really upset me as a kid.

We’d been taught over and over again in school never to go back into a house on fire and not to worry about possessions…

I love “The Carol Burnett Show “ skit of ‘The Walnuts’ with Carol as John-Girl and Joan Rivers as Mama-Woman.

R14, they did everything wrong in that episode including having dinner in their burnt out shell of a house afterward.

“The Homecoming” was actually a Hallmark Christmas special, leading to the actual series premiering the following fall season. What throws me is growing up watching this show as a kid in real-time and trying to process that those “kids” are now into their 60s and 70s!

I love that both Grandma and Grandpa Walton were gay in real life.

I always like Richard Thomas and weirdly found him sexy. If they'd had laser resurfacing back then, he should have gotten that splotch removed. It will never not be completely distracting.

The Baldwin sisters were my favorite characters.

Helen Lawson was cast as Mamie Baldwin but dropped out last minute when "Hard Rhoda Ho" went on Broadway, so they gave the part to Helen Kleeb. I would have loved to see Lawson in that role.
