"The Long, Hot Summer" was Fox's southern saga answer to "Cat on a Hot Tin Roof" back in '58. Paul Newman got to play the sexy stud, whereas Tony Franciosa got to play the immature Brick-type. Sadly, Orson Welles may be big here, but he's no Big Daddy like Burl Ives! Joanne Woodward plays an old maid, but there's Lee Remick as a Maggie the Cat type. Watchable for the cast, scenery, and Paul & Joanne's first teaming. My take here:
All of what OP said. Yep, I actually find Paul even sexier in this than in his turn in “Tin Roof.”

I love Lee Remick in this, she’s so beautiful as the flirty, southern belle wife.

I watch this for Orson Welles scene stealing and never understood his blackface

R3 is right. Orson looked like Fats Waller in this movie.

That music Lee Remmick's character liked was irritating as hell. They didn't need to labor that point.

Wasn’t Joanne woodward’s name Clara? Miss Clara? Why is that useless piece of information in my head? Oh - and Ben Quick. Hated her short bangs. Wasn’t Richard Anderson’s (Clara’s beau) supposed to be gay? …. Do you remember the 1980a 2 parter with Don Johnson , Judith Ivey, Cybil Shepherd and .. I don’t remember who played the other roles. … I really enjoy the original. You can taste the lemons and bourbon and sweat between the cleavage …

I loved the theme song too, sung by Jimmie Rodgers.

What’s the movie I’m thinking of that has Ed Begley Sr. as a Big Daddy type?

That would be Sweet Bird of Youth, r10.

Before there was Big Donald with his painted brown face, there was Orson Welles, looking and sounding barely recognizable. Angela Lansbury commented later that it looked like he was playing Othello!

It also was a short-lived series on ABC during the 60s.

Here's Angie and Orsie. As I wrote in my review, Welles was just 10 years older than Paul Newman!

#r13 There are several episodes on You Tube. Lana Wood , Natalie Wood’s bosomy younger sister played the Lee Remick part.

Not a great movie, but, fun, with not so veiled references to homsexuality.
Shades of Blanche Dubois.
"Blanche...Blanche...

R14: Lansbury was even closer to Newman's age.

First of all William Faulkner's writings are the source of this material. 1939" " Barn Burning" and novel " The Hamlet ". I see no connection to " Cat On A Hot Tin Roof" except the heat of summer, the same star- Paul Newman, and Orson Welles' horrible performance- which stand in stark contrast to Burl Ives . These stories are not about the lies and self- deception of a wounded closeted man. This a story about a woman in the South with limited options, a brother who lacks self- awareness, and a father who has no real detail. Big Daddy had a past. Orson Welles looks like he wondered onto the set. Newman's character is nothing like Brick. Brick is a subtle character. All Newman's character has in this film is that people fear he is a barn burner. It's not the same. And finally there is one thing the film has that is lacking in others: Angela Lansbury who gives another excellent - unnoticed - performance.

Does the Paul Newman character have that disease that makes you want to burn things down? What's it called? Pyromania?

That night time scene of Paul Newman entering Joanne Woodward's bedroom seemingly wearing nothing more than a pillow and his gorgeous bronzed skin, was burned into my little gayling head around 1961 when the film would often be shown on network TV's Saturday Night at the Movies, the first regular prime time showcase for old (mostly from the 1950s) movies, mostly from the Fox catalogue. It was also where I first saw all of Marilyn Monroe's big movies, Susan Hayward's, Robert Mitchum's, Clifton Webb's, etc.
Loved it!

“ I love sexy Southern melodramas, so it’s amazing that I somehow missed 1958’s The Long, Hot Summer.”
Doesn’t make lick of sense to a dedicated movie fan.

Here's Orson Welles and Paul Newman sparring, as the two alpha males in "The Long, Hot Summer." Paul's the one who's all sweaty in a wifebeater...

Oh, and Paul looked pretty cute in his boxers, as well!

Why do most American actresses born in the South seem to have the worst Southern accent in their films? Joanne’s accent was atrocious in TLHS.

I really need to watch this again, I guess. My childhood memory of it is as great film with an incredible ensemble cast Wonder if I'd see all these flaws you're all going on about.

Joanne and Tony Franciosa (who I thought was off the charts hot) were not believable as siblings.

Tony had the same coloring as Orson in the movie. ;)

Yeah, they were believable as father and son.
