The Godfather (1972)

This was on one of the Showtime channels last night. I haven’t seen it in a while. The transfer wasn’t great, it looked a bit faded and grainy. Hopefully it looks better on BluRay.

Do you think the nurse in the hospital was in on the attempted murder of Vito that Michael prevented? She seems a bit shifty and nervous when they are moving him.

How did they get a bloody horse head in Jack Woltz’s bed without him realizing?

He probably had lots of after dinner alcohol.

Bribe the help to add sedatives to food and drink. Piece of cake compared to severing a horse's head.

She was not in on the plot; she was merely a stickler for hospital procedure.

Such an exciting time for a movie loving fan. I wasn't even old enough to see an R rated movies yet, but it was cool passing the theaters with lines down the block all day.

He was asleep, Rose.

I presume that Showtime is showing the most recent "50th Anniversary" restoration (2022), in which case you should know that it does not look the same as the original film. Coppola, like George Lucas, just can't stop from meddling around with his masterpieces, and the 2022 restoration apparently brightens and changes the color-timing quite a bit. (I have not watched it, though I have seen screenshots.)

On the other hand, the 2007 restoration (often called the "Coppola Restoration") tried to replicate the low-level lighting of Gordon Willis' beautiful cinematography and the rich, sepia tones of the original. Fortunately, this version can still be found on Blu-ray. Just look for discs with copyright dates prior to 2022.

Sonny’s wife was much prettier than double-chinned Lucy Mancini. But I guess if you have an abnormally large vagina that can accommodate Sonny’s huge dick…

A movie where I don’t find one character attractive. James Caan maybe comes the closest. I don’t know if it was the cinematography or what but it’s a bunch of unattractive dudes.

Obviously I wasn’t expecting a Chippendales revue. 70s films just hit different.

Overrated and the novel is worse

Are you serious? R9 Al Pacino is gorgeous in this movie and Part 2.

I had an Italian man fetish in the early 2000's between watching Pacino's filmography and Michael Imperioli on The Sopranos.

Thanks, R7. I looked and the Coppola Restoration is still for sale on Amazon.

My clothes were leftovers from the Munchkins’ “Wizard Of Oz” wardrobe!

It was an ABORTION, Michael.

In the book, the movie mogul spent the earlier part of the evening raping a young girl, so he was pretty tired.

Diane was dressed in bright colors in contrast to the earth tones of the family to indicate that she was an outsider. Then, in the final scene, the color of her dress and hair were the exact color of the walls, indicating that she was no more than a part of the house to Michael.

Final scene.

Agree, r11. Pacino was beautiful in the Godfather, but in part 2 his looks changed/faded. It was filmed only 3 years later, so I assume it was makeup that was purposely unflattering so he wouldn't look so angelic, for lack of a better word.

I don’t like Part 2 as much. I liked the family dynamics and domestic moments in the first rather than all the business wheeling and dealings in the sequel. I did like the DeNiro segments though.

"I'm Enzo the Baker"

by Anonymousreply 20June 23, 2025 12:05 AM

R18, by the last scene of The Godfather I, Pacino’s face is already changing, you can see the vulnerability and beauty draining out of it.

'I believe in America.'
