Former DOGE engineer says federal waste and fraud were 'relatively nonexistent'

A former employee of the Department of Government Efficiency says that he found that the federal waste, fraud and abuse that his agency was supposed to uncover were "relatively nonexistent" during his short time embedded within the Department of Veterans Affairs.

"I personally was pretty surprised, actually, at how efficient the government was," Sahil Lavingia told NPR's Juana Summers.

Lavingia was a successful software developer and the founder of Gumroad, a platform for online sales, when he joined DOGE in March. Lavingia said he had previously sought to work for the U.S. Digital Service, the technology unit that was renamed and restructured by the Trump administration. He told NPR that he just wanted to make government websites easier for citizens to use and didn't really care which presidential administration he was working for, despite protests from his friends and family.

Lavingia said the overall message at DOGE was transparency and a vibe of "ask for forgiveness, not permission." So, when a blogger asked for an interview about Gumroad, he agreed. And when asked, he talked about his work at DOGE, including how little inefficiency he saw compared to what he was expecting.

"Elon [Musk] was pretty clear about how he wanted DOGE to be maximally transparent," Lavingia said. "That's something he said a lot in private. And publicly. And so I thought, OK, cool, I'll take him at his word. I will be transparent."

Shortly after the interview was published online, Lavingia got an email. Just 55 days into his work at DOGE, his access had been revoked.

Of course Elon took away his clearance for telling the truth

by Anonymousreply 1June 20, 2025 11:15 PM

But Trump spent $45 million for a taxpayer-funded military parade to himself that was a HUGE FLOP.

Talk about waste, fraud an abuse.

by Anonymousreply 2June 20, 2025 11:19 PM

Not coincidentally the waste, fraud, and abuse seemed to focus on the agencies that were investigating Musk

by Anonymousreply 3June 20, 2025 11:22 PM

You have to understand Trump/Project 2025 speak.

Just like Musk saying it was a Ponzi Scheme.

He was defining Social Security as an illegal waste of money and a public fraud. Got that?.

Musk stated that Social Security should not exist.

by Anonymousreply 4June 20, 2025 11:24 PM

There is no question in my mind that far more money is pissed away in Silicon Valley and on Wall Street and all over the place in our "hyperefficient, waste not want not," fucked up, ridiculous, and always thoroughly dishonest corporate sector, especially the finance sector. It just becomes monopoly money to these fuckers, and the truth is they were probably all shocked to come upon a place where people actually have to justify all their spending and are answerable not only to bitter little bureaucrats but a whole host of rules and procedures set up by a Congress which combines ignorance and the need to pretend to give a fuck about taxpayer money.

by Anonymousreply 5June 20, 2025 11:25 PM

By this time next month, expect Mr. Summer to have a surprise encounter with some ICE agents, who will assist him moving to his new home in Jena, Louisiana

by Anonymousreply 6June 20, 2025 11:27 PM

The inspector generals of the different government agencies work to find fraud and waste. Their diligent work have saved the government billions.

One of the first things Trump did was fire them. That’s how committed he is to find fraud and waste

by Anonymousreply 7June 20, 2025 11:31 PM

Trump just wanted to turn off the faucets of cash that go to good causes.

It is like he stopped paying contractors before he declared bankruptcy.

This time, he is going to bankrupt the country with Tax Cuts for the 1%.

Prediction: Trump has always envied China's ability to devalue the Yuan...

by Anonymousreply 8June 21, 2025 10:49 AM

Can't wait to see what they do with all this 'saved' money.

Just like I'd be suspicious of a Fox report about the success & necessity of DOGE, I'm suspicious of a source NPR has found to say the exact opposite. Yes, I read the article. I've also listened to NPR tell me that America is more racist than ever & that gender affirming care doesn't pose any consequences. Yes, I believe the DOGE overreach is requiring dissection, but I'm not looking for NPR's told-you-so angle. Another more neutral source is required for an investigation into something so stark in its support from a single political persuasion. The far left NPR isn't who I'm seeking to deliver unbiased accounts of a far right agency, just like I'm not interested in a study sponsored by the sugar industry confirming that their product delivers nothing but healthy benefits.

R10 is the reason why the USA is quickly devolving into a huge shithole on a minute-by-minute basis.

by Anonymousreply 11June 21, 2025 12:40 PM

R10 is Hortense, the not-so-stealth both sides MAGAt.

by Anonymousreply 12June 21, 2025 12:52 PM

It’s a P2025 plan to defund programs that white kkkristians are ideologically opposed to while at the same time cutting taxes for wealthy people so they can buy more toys. And hide more money offshore. They can also hand over responsibility for different programs to ideologically like-minded organizations. Musk is okay with all that because he’s, well, Musk. And he got to weaken any department that was investigating him. It’s funny how he was Dump’s bestie and the poster boy for a better America, with his mom cheerleading white nationalism right alongside her precious asshole son, and now they’re both gone.

by Anonymousreply 13June 21, 2025 12:52 PM

I know several people who lost jobs—or live in terror that they will and/or have been made miserable at work—because of Musk’s cruelty. I hate these motherfuckers so much. And all for some cruel fantasy about fraud and abuse.

by Anonymousreply 14June 21, 2025 1:03 PM

No fan of DOGE, but NPR contradicts its own headline about waste and fraud being non existent with this quote:

[quote] And I do believe that there is a lot of waste. There's minimal amounts of fraud. And abuse, to me, feels relatively nonexistent.

by Anonymousreply 15June 21, 2025 1:12 PM

It was obvious.

After about 1 week of DOGE they ran out of easy things to cut like Seasame Street productions in Iraq and then just started firing locksmiths at the National Parks and closing SSA offices.

by Anonymousreply 16June 21, 2025 1:24 PM

The confident complacency R11 & R12 have in their sources of news & enlightenment is both comical & concerning. As R15 pointed out NPR contradicts itself in its own article. This is common for NPR. Their reports will often contradict their intent with a pay-no-attention-to-that-man-behind-the-curtain finger snap. As I've stated, I'm no supporter of DOGE, but I'm certainly smart enough to know that an NPR exposè shouldn't be why I shouldn't be in the first place.

by Anonymousreply 17June 21, 2025 1:43 PM

DOGE was never about government efficiency or cutting waste and fraud. It was always about taking a chainsaw to the federal government, cutting programs and departments that serve the poor and middle class or don't fit the MAGA agenda, eliminating government oversight and regulatory controls that protect regular Americans, and demonizing and demoralizing the federal workforce as scapegoats.

by Anonymousreply 18June 21, 2025 1:49 PM

[Quote] I'm suspicious of a source NPR has found to say the exact opposite.

Except he was an actual DOGE member.

by Anonymousreply 19June 21, 2025 2:43 PM

The whole point of DOGE was to cut programs the GOP has always hated so that there would be enough money to give the rich yet another tax cut.

Sadly for the GOP, DOGE barely found any fraud and waste and Trump Big Beautiful Bill will add a $3 trillion debt. Interesting that the GOP is looking for other savings fluke cutting Medicaid) but not one person is decreasing those tax cuts

by Anonymousreply 20June 21, 2025 2:45 PM

[Quote] And I do believe that there is a lot of waste. There's minimal amounts of fraud. And abuse, to me, feels relatively nonexistent.

But DOGE couldnt find much, if any. “Waste” seems to be a matter of opinion. If you think USAID and the Dept of Education shouldn’t exist, they’re suddenly waste.

by Anonymousreply 21June 21, 2025 2:47 PM

we are now a banana republic

by Anonymousreply 22June 21, 2025 2:47 PM

I don't see how DOGE was legal when it is only a presidential Line-Item Veto.

The SC told Clinton that that was a no-no.

by Anonymousreply 23June 21, 2025 3:56 PM

DOGE isn’t legal. The Congress is just looking away and giving Trump as much power as he wants

by Anonymousreply 24June 21, 2025 3:58 PM

R10, NPR isn't "far left"

Just because they don't share your hatred of trans people does not mean they are far left. Most journalists are educated and it's the "poorly educated" who are the most hostile to trans rights (and gay rights, too). Sorry, the truth hurts.

People here link to the NY Post all the time but you're worried about NPR?

If you're so convinced that there is a ton of fraud in the government, ask yourself why no one was ever arrested for fraud

by Anonymousreply 25June 21, 2025 4:07 PM

But what about the hundreds of government employees who were arrested and charged with fraud and theft?

r25, the far right, has gone so far off the fascist cliff that every normal centrist news organization seems socialist.

Funny, because socialism will save America.

by Anonymousreply 27June 21, 2025 4:20 PM

Check r10's posting history, r25.

by Anonymousreply 28June 21, 2025 4:21 PM

R10 is a conservative troll. They're all over DL 24/7.

by Anonymousreply 29June 21, 2025 4:37 PM

Of fucking course it was non-existant. What the fuck was wrong with the media? It's impossible to go in and detect waste and fraud in a few days.

About the only thing they could do is run the social security numbers to see if anyone was dead and still collecting. I knew they couldn't find anything that soon, but when I found out they went to the National Child Support Agency, I realized they're just gathering info on everyone. That agency allowed them to get the banking, contact, employment, housing & family info on everyone who pays, gets or has gotten child support. Palantir (peter thiel's company) has a giant contract with the government (courtesy of trump) to create a gigantic database on every person in America. Musk got most of the data for that project.

by Anonymousreply 30June 21, 2025 5:46 PM

I agree r30, I suspect the entire project was really a vast stealing of data to be turned into money by a few Silicon Valley types.

Secondary, was to kill any agency that does anything for anybody who isn't rich, as part of the ongoing project to fuck over the poor (the useless eaters) and to let them scrounge for scraps or preferably just die off.

But mostly a huge attempt to steal data to make the rich richer, in the traditional Republican way.

And agree it was once again a massive failure by the media to take fascism seriously, and in this case to pretend that there was ever the remotest interest in finding real waste or making government better in any way.

by Anonymousreply 31June 21, 2025 5:53 PM

Most of the waste and abuse in government is from the pork projects included in many of the bills, which are basically pet projects for congressmen which are put into the bills in exchange for them voting along with it. There are numerous government oversight and watchdog agencies that make audits. Thew DOGE is basically their way of circumventing proper oversight and eliminating the already legally approved projects and spending bills passed by congress, in order to pay for massive tax cuts for billionaires.

by Anonymousreply 32June 21, 2025 6:57 PM

I see that this is lined out with Asbestos Eyeballs.

Have the DOGE/Trump supporters been working overtime?

Do I need to W&W to remove?
