One's a flight attendant, the other one is an events director, and they've got an $800,000 budget to buy a condo?
It's bizarre how there's this overclass that just has easy access to money.

Maybe they got money from their parents or grandparents?
If you can swing a big down payment and have good credit a bank will give you a mortgage.
by Anonymous | reply 2 | June 20, 2025 4:50 PM |
These two are not exactly from some "overclass". They both work, they sought a discounted mortgage, and they saved some $$ for a down payment. They talk in the article about hosting visitors, which means that when they travel, they probably stay with friends - just one of the ways that they economized to have saved for the goal of home ownership.
No, it's not easy, and it sucks that so few people qualify for assistance, that there is a housing shortage, and little hope on the horizon for anything to change. As I wrote on the "1 in 3 Baby Boomers Say They'll Never Sell Their Home" thread, and sorry for dragging politics into it, but Kamala had a plan to fix the housing crisis — just another way in which just enough young people voted against their self interests to cost their entire generation(s) any opportunities to make their lives better.

DINKS (dual income, no kids), regardless of sexual orientation, have it so much easier than straights when it comes to mortgages. They can generally scrap together the down payment and their combined incomes mean they qualify for bigger loans than us singletons.

This is what I was thinking. Very few people their age have $160,000 (or even $120,000) just lying around for a mortgage. They have to shell out over $1000 a month for the fees on top of their mortgage. At least one of them must come from a wealthy family. I retired from corporate America a few years ago and have a part time job in the hospitality industry. One of my co-workers, a 20-something girl, told me she recently applied for a job as a flight attendant with United. Just for fun, I went to United's website to see what new flight attendants there get paid. I was shocked to see the starting rate is $23.84 per hour. That's less than I make per hour at my part time job, and I don't have even half the responsibilities a flight attendant would have.
Why would anyone want to be a flight attendant? That's a ridiculously low salary.

I think it's the lifestyle, r27. Pilots also earn shit money when they start their careers. I know someone who got hired as a first officer at Horizon Airlines and he quit after a year to go work in an office. The airlines take advantage of the people who really want those jobs.

by Anonymous | reply 33 | June 21, 2025 12:43 AM |
R30 The airline industry has changed so much over the years. Air travel is now like taking a Greyhound bus, and airline employees are paid horribly and treated horribly.
My sister was a United flight attendant way back in the 1970s when they were still called "stewardesses." It was considered a prestigious job. She had a bunch of uniforms, different ones for different flight legs, and they were all designed by Oleg Cassini. She even had to wear a hat! All of her uniforms were dresses and skirts (no pantsuits), and of course, she had to wear heels! She got her picture in the local newspaper when she completed her training. Being a stewardess was a big deal back then, and she made $25,000 a year in the early 70s.
That was good money back then. She was stationed in Miami and could afford her own apartment there.
by Anonymous | reply 34 | June 21, 2025 12:47 AM |
R27 Most people in the airline industry do it for the flight benefits, which aren't what they used to be. Flying standby can be dicey these days. There are fewer and fuller flights than in the past for cost savings.
by Anonymous | reply 35 | June 21, 2025 12:49 AM |
I had a roommate years ago who worked for Delta and had access to standby flights. He told me it was common to miss flight after flight because none of them had open seats. He also said that certain routes like SEA-HNL never had open seats and it wasn't worth trying to get on those flights.

Can an FHA loan be used to buy a condo? The rules for that are that you must be a first time home buyer, meet certain other conditions, and then your down payment is only 5%. (In the case of an 800,000 condo. that would be $40,000). You are on the hook for mortgage insurance every month until you reach a certain level of equity.
by Anonymous | reply 59 | June 21, 2025 8:53 AM |
Reading the article a little more closely, indeed I see the words, "They did some research and found that they qualified for a first-time buyer mortgage rate with a budget of up to $800,000."
To me, that implies that they didn't have to come up with a 20% down payment.

All three properties are condos, so the usual starting point would be 10% cash, though there are also mortgages and first-time buyer assistances that might have meant a down payment if as little as 5% or even 3%.
Depending on the airline a flight attendant with some years of service could easily have a six-figure salary despite rather low starting salaries in the low 60,000s. Airlines seem to use training and probationary periods to keep salaries low, but eventually they can climb. The typical event planner salary is from a quick Google search about 90,000 annually in NYC, with a lot of upward range (100,00-150,000+) depending on employer, responsibilities of the position, etc.
Without a huge stretch if the imagination it's quite possible they have a combined income of 200,000 to 300,000 a year. Not at all a huge stretch as American mortgages are concerned, less for two people who don't have any evident expensive interests, who appear to live rather frugally, band who might we'll have received a bit of cash assistance from various parents -- a not uncommon thing.
It's a condo, not a strict co-op with minimum 50% cash and evidence of 10x the value of the property in liquid assets.

I do large conferences and sales incentive trips etc. Book talent, speakers, manage promotion, vendors, production, event apps, etc
We do have a team and a third party who manages the guest experience parts, which is more the hospitality side.
Neither are bullshit jobs, however. Whether it's a large user conference with the CEO on stage or a bridezilla North Jersey wedding, events are ridiculously expensive, very high profile and for those reasons very high risk.

One of them is 14 years older, so I'm wondering if he had more time to build up his savings.
Chicago is - or at least was - a more affordable place to live, and salaries in some industries can be generous, so it's possible they could have gotten to that 150-200K threshold with a big chunk of their own savings.
Obviously, a shopbottom or someone living in a city where there's a definite earnings ceiling (as there is in most smaller markets) couldn't swing that.

r108 I'm going to guess that what this guy is calling a grand piano is either a baby grand (from 4'8 - 5'2, or a studio grand 5'8-6'0. It's almost certainly not a concert grand (9'0). A smaller grand would fit into an apartment ok, especially if there's any kind of nook where it could slide into. A concert grand can hardly fit into a modern 2000 sq foot home without evicting someone from their bedroom or altering the use of a room to a different purpose (no more dining room).

R59 Yes, as long as the condo has applied for and received approval by the FHA as an FHA-eligible condo. The application process is not trivial and is often handled by an experienced attorney (which means it’s expensive). Condos should have strong reserve fund levels, a limited percentage of renters, a low delinquency rate of condo fee payments, and a history of maintaining a building’s infrastructure.
