TCM is celebrating Juneteenth today, starting this morning with the original 'Sparkle', followed by 'Say Amen Somebody', ' 'Round Midnight', 'The Wiz', and 'Krush Groove'. Worth recording and watching them on a lazy summer afternoon.

Watching 'The Wiz' now. It's much better than what I remember from the first time I watched it in the theater, and the last time I watched it on DVD about 10 years ago.
Michael Jackson was damn good in this - you could see his 'dance moves' and 'limber body' early on (we didn't need to wait for the 'Thriller' videos). I'm surprised he didn't do any more movies. Ross was excellent - there was nothing wrong with her in the role, she was a fine actress and dancer. The music was great.
Nipsey Russel and Ted Lange were each very convincing in their roles.
What was not good ? It was rather scary in parts - no way was this a 'family' movie as many scenes would've scared kids. It was also very depressing shot in such dark tones in subways, rooftops, etc. And yes - it was overproduced. The director and producers needed to take a step back for a few months and start again.
