Broadway News:Jinkx Monsoon Will Take Over Broadway's Oh, Mary!

Currently starring in Roundabout's Pirates!, the two-time RuPaul's Drag Race winner will succeed Tituss Burgess in August.

Two-time RuPaul's Drag Race winner Jinkx Monsoon will join Broadway's Oh, Mary! later this summer, following her current gig in Roundabout Theatre Company's Pirates! The Penzance Musical. The former Little Shop of Horrors and Broadway Chicago star revealed the news on Today June 18.

Monsoon's limited engagement will run August 4-September 27, succeeding Tituss Burgess. 2025 Tony-winning star and writer Cole Escola is currently starring through June 21, with Burgess set to begin a six-week encore engagement June 23. The multi-extended run is currently scheduled to continue through January 4, 2026 at the Lyceum Theatre.

"Now—I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: Cole Escola is the funniest person alive,” says Monsoon in a statement. “Oh, Mary! is one of the best, funniest, most energizing things I’ve seen in my life. To be invited to live in this playground for a time is not only an honor and a privilege, but a lovely chance to showcase the writing talents of one friend, the directorial talents of another, and everything else that comes with this singular production. Happy to trade in one pair of bloomers for another.”

Escola, Tony-nominated as a playwright with the work's Best Play nomination and a Tony winner for their starring role as Mary Todd Lincoln, is currently sharing the stage with fellow original cast members Conrad Ricamora as Mary's Husband, James Scully as Mary's Teacher, Bianca Leigh as Mary's Chaperone, and Tony Macht as Mary's Husband's Assistant. Ricamora, Scullt, Leigh, and Macht will remain with the production through August 2, with casting for Monsoon's stint to be announced.

Oh, Mary! centers on famous First Lady Mary Todd Lincoln in the weeks leading up to the assassination of Abraham Lincoln. In Escola's demented take (or as press notes put it, "through the lens of an idiot"), Mary Todd becomes a madcap, cabaret-obsessed alcoholic.

The piece premiered at Off-Broadway's Lucille Lortel Theatre in 2024 in a run that was extended three times. The production earned two 2024 Outer Critics Circle Awards, including Outstanding New American Play and Lead Performer in an Off-Broadway play, both for Escola. The show also won the 2024 Off Broadway Alliance Award for Best New Play.

Rounding out the company are understudies Hannah Solow, Martin Landry, and Julian Manjerico.

2025 Tony winner Sam Pinkleton directs the Broadway run after staging the Off-Broadway premiere. His creative team includes scenic designer dots, costume designer Holly Pierson, lighting designer Cha See, composer and co-sound designer Daniel Kluger, co-sound designer Drew Levy, wig designer Leah J. Loukas, and music arranger David Dabbon. Casting is by Henry Russell Bergstein. Bryan Bauer and Ryan Patrick Kane are production stage manager and assistant stage manager, respectively.

Do I have to sit through episodes of Drag Race to understand Monsoon's appeal?

Yes, r1.

Ugh.

OP you're very late to the theater starting this limp thread. Already in discussion here.

I know people hate drag and trans on here. But Jinkx is great on drag race. And in person in theater, she’s very engaging and funny.

Jinkx's season (5) on Drag Race was personally one of my favorite seasons.

She was pretty much the underdog of the season with a variety of toxic contestants (i.e. mean girls) who targeted her. I was really pulling for her to at least make the finals.

R1 - Yes

Jinkx’s Judy Garland. If you don’t like this, you won’t like her.

But this is what her fans love.

^“I think I might have killed Judy Garland”.

WTF, Dave?

by Anonymousreply 8June 19, 2025 3:06 PM

On a previous season of drag race, Jinkx was paired up with a guy named Dave for a makeover. Dave told Jinkx that he thought he was responsible for Judy Garland‘s death.

So this was Jinkx as Judy telling Dave he was wrong about telling Jinkx as Jinkx that he was responsible for Judy’s death. It’s why RuPaul loses it - the metaness of it.

This casting seems like it could go either way. I hope she's great. We'll see.

I love Tituss Burgess, I bet he's amazing in this. Any clips?

by Anonymousreply 11June 19, 2025 3:56 PM

Does she have a penis?

by Anonymousreply 12June 19, 2025 7:02 PM

Yes I think he has r12.
