Who will next play Mama Rose when they inevitably revive "Gypsy" yet again in a few years?

No, it's never too early to ask, since they will re-mount this again as sure as the sun comes up in the east.

I would guess they go back to giving it to a genuine belter, so, no chance for Kristin Chenoweth.

Christine Ebersole, Lillias White, Judy Kuhn, and Jennifer Hudson could all have done it once, but they are all too old and will be even older when this is re-mounted.

Vivian Vance?

Would they allow me to play Herbie?

Zombie Pat Suzuki

Jennifer Hudson is YOUNGER than all of the people in your poll.

Sorry, r4: I meant Jennifer Holliday. My bad.

Another revival of 'Gypsy' is not needed or wanted for at least 20 years.

Lea Salonga is on Broadway now in the amazing Sondheim revue “Old Friends.”

She sings a fantastic version of “Everything’s Coming up Roses” so she definitely has the voice.

She also has a trans child that is trying to be an actor. So maybe she can pull of the stage mother part too

by Anonymousreply 10June 19, 2025 12:31 AM

Jesse Mueller. She looked like an old Mother in ‘Waitress.’ Her voice gets worn though.

I'm one who would have loved to see Barbra in the role, not that long ago. But that ship (and Liza's) have sailed.

SCHAILED!

by Anonymousreply 13June 19, 2025 1:24 AM

I was trained to play white ladies - so this is obviously MINE.

They just need to enlarge the door for my ego to fit through.

by Anonymousreply 14June 19, 2025 1:27 AM

Ahem!

by Anonymousreply 15June 19, 2025 1:37 AM

She played five parts in the season opener of "Poker Face," so I guess she has experience.

The timeless Bernadette Peters!

It’s time for a Papa Rose 🌹. Perhaps a helicopter parenting Asian.

Lea Salonga is woefully underrated.

She has an extraordinary voice that blows Sutton Foster, Lea Michele, and Adele Dazeem out of the water.

Hopefully somebody not yet born, so I don’t have to be subjected to ever more threads about that dreadful show.

by Anonymousreply 20June 19, 2025 3:45 AM

If they could do an AI hologram Helen Lawson as Rose, i could finally die in peace.

by Anonymousreply 21June 19, 2025 3:54 AM

I would enjoy the camp factor of Billy Porter’s interpretation of Mama Rose.

R20, But what about Follies?

by Anonymousreply 23June 19, 2025 4:08 AM

"Gypsy" is one of my favorite musicals. I've seen every Broadway production going back to Angela Lansbury's. and also saw Betty Buckley do it at Papermill Playhouse. I never need to see it ever again, and I couldn't care less who will do it the next time. I am "Gypsy'ed" out.
