Baby of Georgia woman who was kept on life support has been delivered
A woman in Georgia whose family said she was brain dead but kept on life support due to the state's abortion laws was given a C-section to deliver her baby, according to a local news report.
Nurse Adriana Smith was declared brain dead after a sudden health emergency in February when she was about eight weeks pregnant, her mother April Newkirk told 11Alive, an Atlanta-based NBC affiliate. Hospital officials told the family at the time that they could not remove Smith from her life support due to state law that bans most abortions after six weeks, the outlet reported.
Smith, whose 31st birthday recently passed, was removed from life support on June 17, her mother told the outlet. Newkirk said the baby, a boy named Chance, was born prematurely at 1 pound, 13 ounces on June 13 and is in the neonatal intensive care unit, the outlet reported.

This child is predicted to be blind and stuck in a wheelchair his whole life. Likely severely retarded.
YAY! we taxpayers get to foot the bill!

The health care costs are the least onerous part of this story, r1.

What an absolute disgrace. I know there’s no hell but the people who did this deserve it. And r1 is right, the yahoos who supported this should be directly billed for the cost of raising this child,

How compassionate to let a child come into the world severely disabled struggling on a daily basis and without a mother! Jesus would be so proud!

Now we're incubating fetuses in corpses. Excellent. I don't think there has ever been a case where an artificially animated mother had a healthy baby unless the mother was very near term and then given a speedy c-section. Even then, it's notoriously dicey in terms of the baby's survival. Being born of a dead mother is not the way things are supposed to work.

Women are just baby machines and this is what American women voted for.

This is horrendous. And that kid is set to have an existential crisis when he finds out what really happened.
However, I skim-read the article and didn't catch where the baby is going to be blind and disabled. Did I miss it?

I read the article and this is the statement from life support incubator Adriana Smith's mother R9:
"He's expected to be OK," Newkirk told 11Alive. "He's just fighting. We just want prayers for him. Just keep praying for him. He's here now."

r9 No he won't. The poor kid developed severe hydrocephalus not long after his mom collapsed. He should have died with her but that Jesus Freak family doesn't know when to quit. They're unfamiliar with "Trust in God but lock your car."

Not in this article but tons of others explain what typically happens in these cases

This is utterly insane. They wouldn't have done this to a white woman.

The family did not want this. Do not blame them.

R12 - the family did not want this at all. The state laws against abortion kept this brain-dead woman alive so she could give birth to a child she will never see.
Don't blame the family - it's the ass-backwards SOUTHERNERS again with their stupidity and bible thumping that did this.

Of course the politicians are backpedaling, claiming that the laws don’t say dead women must deliver babies.
In reality, the laws are purposely vague to scare everyone into being this extreme

I think the hospital is wrong in this case. They should have turned off the ventilator when she was declared dead, just like they would with any other brain-dead patient. As heinous as GA’s abortion law is, keeping a corpse alive isn’t mandated by the law.

This is actually abuse of a corpse, which is also illegal.

The GA antiabortion law is so vague that the hospital’s lawyers felt the hospital would be penalized if ut allowed a pregnant woman to die

The hospital’s lawyers are wrong. She was already legally dead.

That makes sense, R31. And as a dead woman, the fetus would die too. That is a pretty far stretch to call an abortion.

Disgusting. And the fetus that was “harvested” is only a bit over a pound. Hardly viable.
