Sarah Jessica Parker calls out double standards on TV: a male lead can be a murderer & people love him
Sarah Jessica Parker is calling out double standards when it comes to lead characters.
The 60-year-old Sex & The City actress spoke to HuffPost U.K. and reflected on all the backlash her character Carrie Bradshaw has received over the years for her various decisions throughout both the show and sequel series And Just Like That.
"It's always interesting to me that [Carrie is] so condemned, but a male lead on a show can be a murderer, and people love him," she said.
"If a woman has an affair, or behaves poorly, or spends money foolishly […] there's a kind of punitive response to it."
"But I ultimately think that all those feelings are pretty fantastic," she continued.
"That kind of connection and those kinds of strong feelings, both positive and negative, are pretty wonderful. People are kind of captive in those moments to something, and I think that's perfectly fine."
She also said that when it comes to Carrie Bradshaw's dating decisions, viewers should remember "that smart people make bad decisions sometimes [and] are foolish in judgment."
"I think, fundamentally, Carrie is an extraordinarily decent and good person – an extremely devoted friend, she's generous of spirit and time, in all she has to offer," she added, admitting that of course Carrie has "made mistakes" or "not been in mature in love."

Aww people loved Villanelle in Killing Eve. And she's a better dresser.

Jesus what a load of bullshit.
People do not love Walter White or Dexter. Do they find the story entertaining? Sure. Do they seriously consider them a good person? No.

Ah, but if you're a lead male actor on this series who behaves badly, you'll be erased and all of the actresses will turn on you.

You would think that she would know by now that people don't like Carrie Bradshaw because of the actress playing her...

You know who people did love?? Samantha Jones.

Let Carrie go, dear. Even Carol.Channing knew when to stop playing Dolly.

This is a stupid take because the same viewers watching Sex & The City are not the same viewers as The Sopranos and Breaking Bad.
Female villains are beloved. Erica Kane and Alexis Carrington are examples. Reality TV has taken over favorite female villains in the last 20 years and there’s a list of loved villains on those shows.
But the biggest issue is writers are scared to write female characters today who are as flawed as Don Draper or Logan Roy or Walter White because they’ll be accused of sexism.
So yes, Sarah Jessica Parker is brushing up against a real issue, but ironically, Carrie Bradshaw isn’t a victim of double standards so much as she’s a victim of limited female character writing that was never allowed to fully go there.

But I’m sure at 60, she’s probably complained about ageism in Hollywood while there’s 50+ year old actresses still playing mothers to toddlers and doing rom coms.
I’m done with “everything is sexist” when it doesn’t go my way.

Didn't Carrie just stand still and not call 911 when her husband was dying of a heart attack? Shouldn't that be some solace for SJP that some of Carrie's "big mistakes" were negligent homicide?

What's her point? If you got a stallion eating out of your hand, best close the gate before you give her the sugar.

This is sad because Carrie is the only part she can play. And people dislike Carrrie because she cheated on her boyfriend for no good reason and ruined people’s lives. Plus she is a selfish twat. And in real life, SJP was a mean girl to Kin Cattral. Of course people like a fictional murderer more.

Carrie White is more lovable than Carrie Bradshaw.

As passive aggressive as Kim Cattrall is, the more I hear SJP speak the more I’m siding with her.

Gen Z TikTok does not understand Sex and The City at all. They all worship Charlotte and complain that Samantha is not a “girl’s girl”. They hate Carrie for inviting Big to Aidan’s cabin and for asking for money for her mortgage from Charlotte instead of from Big.

She's one of those people who is convinced they are nice and good and well liked and they kinda are but they are so insistent and unctuous about it, so fucking annoying, they are not liked. So they bristle and force the issue over and over. "But I'm NICE and YOU LIKE ME."

Am I a bad person? Should I see a psychiatrist?

They should have cast SJP in “Snow White”. She would have been perfect. But it would’ve taken a lot of CGI to create the younger version.

It already takes a lot of CGI to create the current version of Carrie.

I was shocked that she went on the Adam Friedland show recently. SJP likes Cumtown? Shocking.

R9 is right, the issue with Carrie Bradshaw is that the writers (and SJP) think and write a character that is supposed to be better than actually is. Since she is deemed more or less the central character from a certain point, her romantic problems take center stage and she comes across as egotistical and self.centered. This was pointed out by the viewers, I don’t think it was an intentional part of the creators and hers.
Also, I don’t think she is realizing comparing Carrie with murderous psychos is flattering to her character in the series.

Not true, R14! She was adorable in A Year in the Life, back in the late 80s. Great mini-series you can find on YT, although the attempt at a real series did not fare as well.
Also, David Oliver, RIP.

What pompous nonsense.
The only people talking about Carrie are by definition SATC fans which is a tiny sliver of television viewers. If your show’s fans don’t like your character, that’s on you and your writers, toots. Don’t turn it into some feminist complaint.

The show is and was better when equal time is given to the 4 leads. When it becomes the Carrie show it's annoying. Also the extravagant displays of wealth aren't helping Carrie and / or Aiden to be relatable. Or any of the characters, really except Miranda who is now not super rich. If they were more of regular folk instead of "Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous" I think the show would be more interesting and Carrie less heinous. In this season she's lost her way, waiting around for a man again. I hate it.

Not all characters have to be likable. A more talented actress wouldn’t have any problem admitting that Carrie has become a heinous monster who doesn’t have many redeeming qualities. SJP is way too personally invested in Carrie, as though she thinks the character is an extension of her.

If SJP had never signed on to play Carrie she would have had a decent career playing leads in indie films and doing theatre. And she and Matthew would be living in Brooklyn.

She does realize that the ONLY reason her show is still on the air is thanks to hate watching, right? If people don’t hate her AND her character, the show will be canceled. SJP, be careful what you wish for.
