Trump administration weighs adding 36 countries to travel ban

Donald Trump's administration is considering significantly expanding its travel restrictions by potentially banning citizens of 36 additional countries from entering the United States, according to an internal State Department cable seen by Reuters.

Earlier this month, the Republican president signed a proclamation that banned the entry of citizens from 12 countries, saying the move was needed to protect the United States against "foreign terrorists" and other national security threats.

"The Department has identified 36 countries of concern that might be recommended for full or partial suspension of entry if they do not meet established benchmarks and requirements within 60 days," the cable sent out over the weekend said.

[quote] Among the concerns the State Department raised was the lack of a competent or cooperative government by some of the countries mentioned to produce reliable identity documents, the cable said. Another was "questionable security" of that country's passport.

[quote] Some countries, the cable said, were not cooperative in facilitating the removal of its nationals from the United States who were ordered to be removed. Some countries were overstaying the U.S. visas their citizens were being granted.

[quote] "The Department of State is committed to protecting our nation and its citizens by upholding the highest standards of national security and public safety through our visa process," the official said.

[quote] The countries that could face a full or a partial ban if they do not address these concerns within the next 60 days are: Angola, Antigua and Barbuda, Benin, Bhutan, Burkina Faso, Cabo Verde, Cambodia, Cameroon, Cote D'Ivoire, Democratic Republic of Congo, Djibouti, Dominica, Ethiopia, Egypt, Gabon, The Gambia, Ghana, Kyrgyzstan, Liberia, Malawi, Mauritania, Niger, Nigeria, Saint Kitts and Nevis, Saint Lucia, Sao Tome and Principe, Senegal, South Sudan, Syria, Tanzania, Tonga, Tuvalu, Uganda, Vanuatu, Zambia, and Zimbabwe.

[quote] That would be a significant expansion of the ban that came into effect earlier this month. The countries affected were Afghanistan, Myanmar, Chad, Congo Republic, Equatorial Guinea, Eritrea, Haiti, Iran, Libya, Somalia, Sudan and Yemen.

Almost all of them, African countries.

Quelle surprise.

In effect, he just wants to ban Africans from entering the United States.

I guess he's in a bad mood after his birthday party bombed. Expect more after the G7 Summit where everyone laughs behind his back.

He can add Canada to the list.

WTF is gonna happen next year for the World Cup?

Yeah, yeah, bigger fish to fry and all that but how are some countries going to enter the country to play?

Are all those countries’ games going to be moved to either MX or Canada?

I say move ALL the games to both MX and Canada. Remove the states altogether.

Bring it on r5. He's here now. Entered the country as a convicted felon. That might require custodial detention. Send him to Bordeaux Jail. Or Kingston. AND NO POUTINE. He'd enjoy it too much.

Meanwhile border states are even putting French on their signage to attract the Canadian $$$ they've lost.

There are several reasons that a country may end up on the list, including "not cooperative in facilitating the removal of its nationals from the United States who were ordered to be removed," so not just security reasons.

I often toss and turn sleeplessly in bed at night worrying about all the criminal aliens pouring into the country from St Kitts and Nevis.

Thank you, President!

He doesn't really need a reason. And most of those countries have no means of retaliating. It's like a 13 year old bullying a 6 year old. Par for the course

He’s an international laughing stock. He doesn’t realise that the world order is re-aligning - to exclude him.

His friends Putin and Netanyahu proceed against his will with their own aggressive military tactics. Donald Trump has zero impact on international affairs because he knows nothing about soft power, diplomacy and the power of the U.S. Presidency. China is outsmarting him at every turn because of ground he willingly and voluntarily ceded to them.

He’s a disaster.

I’d say that at this point WE’RE the international laughingstock. We’ve elected him twice. 40% of us are immovably in love him and dream of one day being the Louise to his Thelma.
