Gov. Tim Walz and Rep. Ilhan Omar were on the Minnesota assassin's hit list

Vance Luther Boelter, the 57-year-old that authorities have identified as the suspected gunman wanted for allegedly shooting and killing a state representative and shooting and wounding a state senator in a targeted act of violence, allegedly had dozens of Minnesota Democrats on a target list.

Those on the list included Gov. Tim Walz, U.S. Rep. Ilhan Omar, U.S. Sen. Tina Smith and state Attorney General Keith Ellison, according to law enforcement sources familiar with the matter.

Police said the list -- which was retrieved from the suspect’s vehicle -- also named Hortman and Hoffman. Both victims are Democrats and Hortman was formerly the Speaker of the Minnesota House of Representatives.

The shooter’s list of potential targets also included the names of abortion providers and pro-choice activists, several sources told ABC News. Many of the Democratic lawmakers on the list have been outspoken about pro-choice policy positions, two sources said.

Sen. Amy Klobuchar, D-Minn. called Hortman and Hoffman "friends" and "decent people" who were simply "trying to represent the people that they were elected to represent."

Klobuchar told ABC News' "This Week" co-anchor Martha Raddatz that people should "know" the victims of political violence and threats, calling Hortman in part a "true leader" and saying Hoffman was "equally respected," and that both were "decent people who didn't deserve this to happen to them."

Security resources have been dispatched to protect those people named on the list, authorities said. The Capitol Police said it's "working with our federal, state and local partners."

Authorities said they're still investigating if Boelter knew the victims in Saturday's shootings: State Rep. Melissa Hortman and State Sen. John Hoffman. But Boelter did serve on a state board alongside Hoffman.

It is believed that the third photo in this wanted poster shows the suspect at one of the lawmakers' homes early Saturday. Authorities said the suspect was impersonating a police officer.

Police believe that when the shooter opened fire, he was wearing a latex mask that looked realistic, sources said.

Boelter -- a husband and father, according to an online biography -- has touted an extensive background in security and military training, according to an ABC News review of his online presence and professional history.

Boelter helped lead the private security firm Praetorian Guard Security Services, which is based in the Twin Cities area, according to the company website.

Boelter’s biography on that site said he's been "involved with security situations in Eastern Europe, Africa, North America and the Middle East, including the West Bank, Southern Lebanon and the Gaza Strip."

Lock him away for good when he’s captured.

by Anonymousreply 2June 16, 2025 1:43 AM

Of course. Despite the GOP lies that he was a "progressive" who was mad at moderate Republicans, he actually wanted to kill Dems across the political spectrum

Don't answer the door!

OMG, Walz is giving a great speech but he's being upstaged by a ridiculous bald dyke doing sign-language interpretation.

Are these sign language interpreters necessary anymore?

Doesn't every TV have subtitles now?

by Anonymousreply 20June 16, 2025 3:54 AM

Don't forget the perp is stll at large. So it's wrong to say they "were" on the list. They still are on the lsit.

by Anonymousreply 21June 16, 2025 3:55 AM

This is Walz's moment to show he can be a strong leader.

Meanwhile, “passports and money” were found in the SUV of Boelter’s wife Jennie. Clearly, she knew what he was doing.

Also, it appears Trump and Noem had been warned about Boelter some time ago.

by Anonymousreply 31June 16, 2025 12:50 PM

Clearly you couldn’t figure it out, could you R30.

by Anonymousreply 32June 16, 2025 1:23 PM

After two days: "Hey, why don't we get around to it, and see if he's out on his farm?"

by Anonymousreply 33June 16, 2025 1:26 PM

[quote] Chilling details emerge in Minnesota shootings as Vance Boelter faces federal charges: 'Stuff of nightmares'

The man suspected of shooting and killing a Minnesota lawmaker and her husband as well as shooting and wounding a second lawmaker and his wife "stalked his victims like prey" and "shot them in cold blood," acting U.S. Attorney for the District of Minnesota Joseph Thompson said.

"His crimes are the stuff of nightmares," Thompson said at a news conference as he outlined the "chilling" details.

Vance Boelter, 57, is accused of killing Democratic Minnesota state Rep. Melissa Hortman and her husband, Mark, and wounding Democratic state Sen. John Hoffman and his wife, Yvette, in "political assassinations," Thompson said.

Boelter, who was arrested overnight near his farm in Green Isle, Minnesota, is facing federal charges including stalking and firearms charges and state charges including first-degree murder, officials said.

Boelter allegedly had firearms and a list of 45 elected officials in notebooks in his car, Thompson said. He allegedly surveilled his victims' homes and took notes, Thompson said.

Two other lawmakers were spared the night of the shootings, Thompson revealed as he outlined the four homes that Boelter allegedly drove to early Saturday.

Boelter allegedly first drove to Hoffman's home in Champlin, Minnesota, in a black SUV with emergency lights turned on and a license plate that said "police," Thompson said.

Hoffman's "chilling" security camera footage showed the suspect in a black tactical vest, body armor and a "hyper-realistic silicon mask," Thompson said. Armed with a flashlight and a 9 mm Beretta handgun, Boelter allegedly knocked on the front door and repeatedly shouted, "This is the police, open the door!" Thompson said.

When Sen. Hoffman and his wife came to the door, the suspect shined the flashlight in their faces, said there was a shooting reported in the house and asked if the couple had weapons, Thompson said.

The Hoffmans shouted, "You're not a cop!" Thompson said, and then the suspect announced that "this is a robbery" and he forced his way into the home.

When Sen. Hoffman tried to push the suspect out of the house, Boelter shot him and his wife, Thompson said.

The Hoffmans' daughter called 911, Thompson said.

At 2:24 a.m., Boelter allegedly drove to a state representative's house in Maple Grove, Thompson said. That lawmaker was not home as she and her family were on vacation, Thompson said, and Boelter left the scene.

Boelter then allegedly drove to a state senator's home in New Hope and parked on the street, Thompson said.

At 2:36 a.m., after learning of the shooting at Hoffman's home, New Hope police dispatched an officer to the New Hope lawmaker's house, Thompson said. When the officer arrived, she saw Boelter's car parked down the block and she believed Boelter was an officer dispatched to the scene, Thompson said.

The officer pulled up next to Boelter, rolled down her window and tried to speak with him, but he did not respond and stared straight ahead, Thompson said. So the New Hope officer drove to the state senator's home and waited for other law enforcement, and by that time, Boelter had left the scene, Thompson said.

After the Hoffmans were shot, officers proactively went to the home of his fellow lawmaker, former Speaker of the Minnesota House of Representatives Melissa Hortman, in the nearby town of Brooklyn Park.

When two Brooklyn Park officers arrived, they saw Boelter's SUV in the driveway with emergency lights flashing and Boelter standing in front of the house a few feet from the door, Thompson said.

When Boelter saw the officers, he allegedly started firing and rushed into the house, killing Hortman and her husband, Thompson said.

The Brooklyn Park officers fired at Boelter while he allegedly rushed into the home, but Boelter escaped into the house and out the back, Thompson said.

R40, I honestly laughed out loud at that part in the article from picturing the officer trying to communicate with that psycho in his rubber Michael Myers mask, and he's sitting there pretending not to hear her. The whole scene sounds like a plot hole in some B-level horror movie. I used to think those movies were intentionally making cops look incompetent, but they may have been drawing from real life.

I know impersonating an officer is a serious crime, but how is it that they have no way to identify each other? The article says the officer tried to talk to him, but did she have any idea who she was trying to talk to? I mean, obviously not, but she just continued on to the location and didn't find that whole interaction...odd to say the least. I wonder why the police seemed so loopy on this case. We can only hope for a full confession now that the perp is caught.

I wonder how much of it plays into the fact that she's a female in a male dominated police force?

The fact that she just accepted it as "normal," that this male officer ignored her, kind of points to a larger problem.

She asked him a question, he ignored her, and she went back to her car. That suggests something that happens to her a LOT. So much so, that she didn't think anything of it.

Either she thought he was a higher ranking officer who couldn't be bothered with her, or she took it as a signal to leave him alone. OR, she was terrified that someone she thought was a fellow officer, was sitting there in a creepy rubber mask, just staring straight ahead.

I'm a male, but any of the above things I mentioned, could be true. And reason for her to go back to her vehicle.

r20, I was watching BBC the other day, and the interpreter was hilarious- they made him 1/4 of the screen, and his facial expressions were priceless. His name is Eddie Moriarty.

I’ve got a 45 shotgun. A pot of hot dish. And an ugly woman. Fuck around and find out.
