Setting aside the usual DL echo chamber, who's right here

I was having lunch with two college friends.

One of them told us that his son is transitioning into being a woman.

The three of us chatted for a bit with him giving us some more details. I asked him, "so how are you doing with this news?" Seemed like a perfectly reasonable question to ask.

Our other friend went ballistic saying how inappropriate that question was, how transitioning is difficult for the person and not the parents, and a lot of other, frankly, bizarre and moderately incoherent stuff.

Apparently, I'm the monster for even asking the question.

I have a friend going through this with his child and says it’s awful. Not the trans part per se but all the psychological problems that precede/surround/transcend it.
