They may but know yet, R1. But it can be spread by sharing beverages.

“It spreads from person-to-person by coughing or coming into close or lengthy contact with someone who is sick or who carries the bacteria. Contact includes kissing, sharing drinks, or living together. Up to one (1) in 10 people carry meningococcal bacteria in their nose or throat without getting sick.”
There is a vaccine.

There's an ever-growing list of vaccines I need to get.
Think of all the lives that could be saved if there were a much more systematic way of getting them besides a person just deciding to do it.

I nearly died of bacterial meningitis when I was 25. However I didn't contract it from anyone they told me that the bacteria is found in most people sinuses it just rarely ever develops into a life-threatening infection like mine did.

My neighbor named her daughter Mollaret, which is creepy (Mollaret's meningitis). We've asked the neighbor before how she came up with such a lovely, unique name, and she just says "Oh, I heard it, and thought it was so pretty." Thank goodness they just call the kid Molly.
