What do you call the making of video on your phone?

Or on a camera for that matter?

I’ve seen people call it “filming,” but that’s clearly wrong.

Same goes for “taping” of course.

Recording I think is technically correct because that just means capturing the audio or video. But I don’t think it sounds right to say “I recorded you just now.” That sounds too much like capturing sound.

To say “I videoed you” is awkward and dumb. “I made video” sounds like making pee pee.

So what do YOU say? What DO you say? WHAT do you say? What do you SAY? (Use whichever emphasis you prefer.)

I might also use “video” as a verb.

“I videoed you.”

"Attention-Seeking"

by Anonymousreply 3June 14, 2025 2:30 PM

You know what, OP? When you say you “called” someone, you didn’t actually yell.

by Anonymousreply 4June 14, 2025 2:31 PM

Whatever that means

[Quote] “I videoed you.”

Yes r2 I actually mentioned that in the OP. It’s clunky though.

by Anonymousreply 6June 14, 2025 3:07 PM

I say I recorded.

by Anonymousreply 7June 14, 2025 3:18 PM

I have no idea what's going on in the OP except the guy in the image using that ancient iPhone is hot

by Anonymousreply 8June 14, 2025 3:29 PM

I call it making a video on my phone.

by Anonymousreply 9June 14, 2025 3:30 PM

Sober up, OP.

by Anonymousreply 10June 14, 2025 3:33 PM

R8 Umm, go take a walk.

by Anonymousreply 11June 14, 2025 3:34 PM

“Hey! I just documented you for posterity.”

by Anonymousreply 12June 14, 2025 3:35 PM

I just say I filmed it. Almost no one actually uses analog film or tape anymore. I assure you, there's no cause for confusion.

[quote] Whatever that means

What it means is that we have always applied our existing language to new technologies. The word “call” originally meant yelling out to someone across a distance and when we invented the telephone we naturally continued to use the familiar word.

“Video” is short for videotape and of course “filming” refers to exposing film to light, but we still use those terms to refer to digital recording because there are no other exiting words for the action of creating a motion picture recording. Eventually, no one will know that “film” and “video” once referred to the dead technologies. Just as no own thinks “typing” refers to typesetting or typewriting. For that matter why do we call sending short messages “texting?”
