Crumpled Paper Shopping Bag Rupert Everett Says He Hate-Watches "Hacks"
I'm sure Jean Smart is crying all the way to the bank.
From Entertainment Weekly:
Not sure what Deborah Vance would say about this.
Actor and Taormina Film Festival juror Rupert Everett shared his thoughts on the film and television industry at the annual film festival in Italy, where he also spoke about his love-hate relationship with the acclaimed HBO comedy Hacks.
"I like to watch things I really don't like," the British actor said at the festival, per Deadline. "For example, I've been watching this series called Hacks recently, and I really hate every single episode. Each episode I hate more than the last one, but I can't stop watching."
He added, "So I enjoy that."
Elsewhere at Taormina, Everett lamented "cinematic wokery" in what he called a "puritanical" entertainment climate.
"I think, for me, it's not having a very good moment because I preferred the world of entertainment when it was a little bit less puritanical," he said when asked about the state of the industry. "I feel that now we've got into a world where everybody's so easily offended by anything that anybody does that the result is that everything is completely predictable, and as a result really quite boring."

Everett is in the second decade of his Bitter Old Queen stage of life.

If he can’t stop watching it, then the show isn’t what he really hates here.

Hacks is fine. Overrated. I didn’t like season 4 much

I kind of get bored with all these shows that take a year or more between seasons. I was excited to binge Ginny & Georgia last weekend, and checked out after 5 minutes. Was the same when I got to season 3 of Hacks.

R3 Some media, like Hacks and Schitt’s Creek, arouses a pretty fierce response if you criticize it honestly. I really wanted to enjoy Hacks more than I did, but the writing in that last season wandered off the trail. It’s hard to share that without triggering that “bitchdontyouever!” protective response.
I think some series smartly ended at the right moment, or paused a season or two to retool and return, like Curb Your Enthusiasm.
Timing is everything, I think.

R4 it must be very hard to map out timelines for successful programs when they depend on the availability of the best writers and actors and producers. They’re like tumblers in a lock. If one is off, everything jams up.
I think in the return of Arrested Development they had to wait for certain pieces to fit together (the character of Lindsey was filmed against green screens and spliced into some scenes). The last seasons had to be re-edited and re-sequenced and still worked out only partially in the end.
I can’t imagine the stress and pressure of producing a third or fourth season of a cult hit. I think Flight of the Concords may have played it right but stopping at the right moment. Maybe The Comeback did, too.

I still want S3 of The Comeback, though.

R7 The way they crafted the story arc for Mickey was pretty masterful. That actor, Robert Michael Morris, did amazingly. He really”went for it” showing all the messy complexity of the relationship between Mickey and Valerie. And Lisa Kudrow managed to match him through all these nervous gestures and expressions. It was great.

Is that even true anymore? (Old) People say this but no one seems to get offended at Curb or Veep, which definitely push the envelope but in funny ways.

It's criminal what he did to his face.

I recently watched The Comfort of Strangers. He does nothing for me, just like that movie.
He’s such an old bitch. You’d think having no career left and looking the way he does would humble him a bit, but no.

Hacks is a bit of a hate watch for me. A lot of it doesn't really land and all the characters seem too selfish to be likable.

Rupert is such an ugly old skank.

I know we've had the occasional celebrity at DL, and I have to believe Rupert was a visitor now and then. And I know he'd say he has better things to do, but really, Rupert, do you?

[quote]"I like to watch things I really don't like,"
This describes half the posters on DL. Just look at the comments for any Ryan Murphy project, or SNL thread. They bitch and moan about everything but, for some reason, can't stop watching.

Veep was just dumb. I’ve never gotten the adoration over that show. The writing was terrible and everyone dishes out the same tired insults with zero differentiation between character.
Jean Smart is a treasure but I’ve yet to fully watch Hacks. Based upon the clips I’ve seen it looks good but I can see how some could overrate it to the hilt.

But those are old shows now.
VEEP started thirteen years ago, and CURB started 25 years ago.

This isn’t about Hacks but about his pointless bitchery. A true datalounger, only he does it in public. Very unnecessary.
And really, a gay man bitching about ‘wokery’ in the current politcal climate? I guess with all that time spent hate-watching he doesn’t watch the news.

He looks like an old midwestern farmer shopping at the feed store.
What happened?

Actually OP, most of us here hate watched it considering how bad it got. So what’s your point?

In fairness r1, Rupes has been a perma-bitching recalcitrant since Another Country. The first interview I ever heard him give he was complaining about something that had zero effect on him.
I’ll give him credit and tip my hat to his performance in his Oscar Wilde project. He really was excellent. Stephen Fry eat your heart out.

The Times (UK) published a long profile of him maybe six or seven years ago. The female journalist had to spend at least several days with him, and the piece she ended up writing was absolutely dripping with contempt. It was clear that she loathed him--she made no attempt whatsoever to hide it. She quoted him as saying that he was "excited" at the prospect of dying because of all the extraordinary people who've preceded him in death. Quite the character!

Veep was amazing except for the last season. And it created the most outlandish plots for Presidential elections that basically came true in 2024.
This scene is the single best scene that captures what it is like to be a manager at any company in the US.

What the hell has he done to his face?
Obviously, he had that awful work done a few years ago.
But, now he looks like Stan on American Dad with that jaw and chin.

Rupert looks this way even AFTER having had drastic plastic surgery a few years back.
What did he do to himself to make himself look so horrible?

I recall him writing some magazine piece a year or so ago. It was so achingly pretentious.

He's still 6'4". They can't take that away from him! (unless he's shrunk in his dotage)

He's shrunk, I can guarantee that.
I used to be 6'2", and I'm an inch shorter now, and I'm not even 60.
