I really miss 24 hour stores

I can’t tell you how much I miss grocery stores and stores in general being open 24/7. I’m not free with work until 1 am tonight and really need to go to the grocery store as I’m out of everything.

Also, there was just something peaceful about shopping at 2 am or knowing a store would be open in case you had an emergency.

Same. I feel like since Covid everything closes so early

by Anonymousreply 1June 14, 2025 4:20 AM

True but it’s been 5 years already. People still have night shifts and need stuff during the middle of the night.

Walmart was experiencing too much theft at night. They used covid as an excuse to start closing at 11pm and never went back.

I had no idea. I'm from the U.S. but haven't lived there in years. I often see stupid expat lists of differences between the U.S. and European countries. The lists often present the U.S. as a place where, unlike most of Europe, 24 hour restaurants and stores are common. But no so much, evidently.

Definitely not since 2020, R4. Even the 24/7 Walgreens and CVS stores near me have reverted to just 7 am to midnight. There’s no longer any pharmacy open 24/7 which is scary as hell.

Does everything open later too? Maybe I’m losing it, but I could swear there were way more places open at 6 or 7, ten years ago. The quality of service is so horrible now too. Can anything ever be good again?

by Anonymousreply 6June 14, 2025 8:51 PM

These places not exist? They do where I live.

by Anonymousreply 7June 14, 2025 8:54 PM

I know WinCo open 247

by Anonymousreply 8June 14, 2025 8:55 PM

R5: Why is it scary as hell. When was the last time you needed a prescription filled at 2 am?

by Anonymousreply 9June 14, 2025 8:57 PM

Sheetz, WaWa, 7-11, and other larger convenience stores are open 24 hours. It's very hard to find people willing to work 3rd shift for shitty money.

by Anonymousreply 10June 14, 2025 9:36 PM

Covid fucked up everything.

by Anonymousreply 11June 14, 2025 9:38 PM

I live in Miami Edgewater and there is a supermarket that went 24 hours when Publix opened.

When I walk at 4:30 am, there are always a few cars in the parking lot.

In college, I used to love doing my grocery and Walmart shopping at like 2am. It felt peaceful, and not just because it was quiet.

But yeah, since Covid, even New York closes down early. There have been several times in the past few years when I walked home from a Broadway show and tried to find a diner or even just a slice and can’t find a single thing open.

When they began allowing looting as long as it was under so much money it was all over.

7-11 is not. It’s right there in the goddamn title. Philly shuts down by midnight.

7-11 is not. It’s right there in the goddamn name. Philly shuts down by midnight. They’re franchises.

A Korean grocery store opened a few years ago in my neighborhood when I was working evenings and nights. It's opened 24/7 and has very low priced fruits and vegetables. It really had a positive impact for me. I could shop when I got off the subway when the place was empty and not a feeding frenzy like it is during the day. The cheap prices cut my weekly grocery bill in half.

It's not like it used to be in NYC, the city that used to not sleep, but you can still find 24 hour places around hospitals and police precincts.

Where I am some grocery stores are open until 10 or 11 but that’s as late as it gets other than convenience stores or a few restaurants

by Anonymousreply 18June 14, 2025 10:46 PM

I also work odd hours so often need to shop later at night. I rarely shopped after midnight but it was nice having the option if I needed to. I specifically remember one after midnight run to Walmart for rat traps after a dire kitchen discovery years ago.

In spite of the name many 7-11s were 24/7 before Covid. I think some in my area have returned to 24 hours but for several years post-pandemic they closed at midnight and reopened at 6am. But I’m sure it depends on location and franchise owner

I miss 24 hour porn shops and peep shows.

All my neighborhood grocery stores started closing earlier after COVID. The one that used to be open until midnight now closes at 11pm. The ones that used to be open until 11 now closes at 10pm.

R9 because if you get discharged from the hospital at 3 am with pain medications, you’re shit out of luck.
