David Beckham, Gary Oldman and Roger Daltrey knighted in King’s birthday honours

Former England football captain David Beckham, actor Gary Oldman and The Who’s Roger Daltrey have all been knighted, while stage performer Elaine Paige, novelist Pat Barker and former Tory minister Penny Mordaunt were all given damehoods in the King’s birthday honours.

More than 1,200 people from across the UK were handed honours, with the top gong going to Sir Antony Gormley, the sculptor behind the Angel of the North, who was recognised for his services to art with a Companion of Honour.

News of Sir David’s knighthood broke last week after the football star had been in the running for more than a decade. He has been made a knight for his services to sport and charity – working with Unicef and Malaria No More – two decades after he was first made an OBE.

Why was some chav soccer player knighted?

by Anonymousreply 1June 14, 2025 4:21 AM

Penny Mordaunt was a real star of the Coronation, so not surprised there.

Congratulations to Gary Oldman, whose mad acting skilz mean he is nearly always overlooked in those illustrious forums where people are routinely given awards for being the same, but very charismatic, in everything.

(Don't Oh Dear me, I know it's fora.)

What did Penny Mordaunt do to deserve a Damehood?

by Anonymousreply 3June 14, 2025 6:36 AM

More importantly, what did David B. do to piss off his hair colorist?

That beard and those eyebrows were drawn on with a medium brown Sharpie.

All it does is take away your desire to criticize your country when it needs to be. It’s really quite brilliant, no?

by Anonymousreply 5June 14, 2025 12:05 PM

R4 That was Brooklyn, getting ready for his new show as a colorist.

by Anonymousreply 6June 14, 2025 12:30 PM

He must’ve thought it was white boy day. It ain’t white boy day, is it?

More and more "chavs" will be need to be honoured to keep the House of Windsor popular and relevant.

by Anonymousreply 8June 14, 2025 12:37 PM

I hope the rumors about Alan Rickman turning “honors” down was true.

Nonsense. Sir David? lol

by Anonymousreply 9June 14, 2025 4:06 PM

Yeah, Gary always seemed to dwell just under stardom for decades.

He lives permanently in Palm Springs now and seems like a regular guy.

by Anonymousreply 10June 14, 2025 4:13 PM

lol Gary Oldman is a massive Conservative.

by Anonymousreply 11June 14, 2025 4:50 PM

Lots of people turn down honours and that's fine.

But I also think it's right that people who have achieved excellence in their chosen field should also be honoured by their country.

The people who sneer at Beckham generally do so because they think he's common and that sport, in particular football, is inconsequential.

by Anonymousreply 12June 14, 2025 4:52 PM

R7 ?

[QUOTElol Gary Oldman is a massive Conservative

As is Daltrey -- big Brexiter.

Then why would he live in Palm Springs, one of the gayest places in the US?

I'm guessing that David and Victoria Beckham are also right-wingers.

It seems to be the pre-requisite for receiving a knighthood from King Charles.

by Anonymousreply 15June 14, 2025 5:26 PM

R15 - I think he's had a mix of comments over the years about PC run amok and other comments that are liberal. I don't think anyone can steadfastly say he's conservative or even anti-gay.

He likes Palm Springs because it's close to LA and a lot easier to do everyday life things. He mentioned this in an article. Just going to the store, doctor's appt or running an errand in LA took a long time. PS is pretty small. I doubt that it's his only home though.

[QUOTE]It seems to be the pre-requisite for receiving a knighthood from King Charles

Charles takes recommendations from the PM and the government. Some were speculating tha Beckham finally got the long-coveted honor because it's a Labour government now.

[quote]As is Daltrey -- big Brexiter.

Better to have voted to leave the European Union than be a paedophile, frankly.

Other than exercised his democratic vote is there any reason why a music legend like Roger Daltrey shouldn't be honoured by his country?

Last year Imelda Staunton was made a Dame - she exercised her democratic right by campaigning for Labour in the election.

I'd rather recognise achievement without a deep dive into the person's electoral history.

I love it! Victoria, Lady Beckham

by Anonymousreply 19June 15, 2025 3:56 AM

Honours are not decided by the King. He just presents them.

by Anonymousreply 20June 15, 2025 5:54 AM

I thought Gary Oldman already was one tbh

by Anonymousreply 21June 15, 2025 6:03 AM

It's crazy how in the pic @OP 50-year old Beckham looks like Oldman's (67) and Daltrey's (81!) contemporary.

Bad, bad eye work and dye job.
