I don’t understand everyone saying she could go to the house. Granted, this came from the People article, but it said:

Controlling & abusive men will go as far as conspiring with mutual family & friends in order to have their wives placed on psych holds, because they use it as a silencing mechanism when the wife wants a divorce, or when the wife threatens to go public with what’s happening behind closed doors.

And absolutely, the wife can act and look batshit crazy, after years of being beaten down emotionally & abused.

I’m not saying that’s what happened here. What I am saying is that unless you have witnessed something like this up close & personal, then you have zero clue about how horrifically manipulative a genuinely abusive partner can be. Years and years of exposure to an abusive partner will make anyone look crazy, because abusive partners gaslight the shit out of their partners, and make them constantly question their reality, and sense of self esteem.

I hope she gets better soon, heals, and is able to move on from whatever is tormenting her.

Leave a partner immediately, if they start fucking with you in an abusive manner. It almost always escalates & rarely ever stops, despite promises to change.

Her biological father and mother are who got her placed in a psych ward. Scott had nothing to do with it. Police themselves confirmed her father called them because they feared for the safety of her and the grandchild who was with her.

R42, I’ve never been placed in a psych hold by an abusive partner, primarily because I don’t date or marry abusive, controlling men, hence I take accountability by staying away from abusive fucks.

Have you ever seen a relative or friend in an abusive, even violent relationship? Have you witnessed first hand what happens to both men & women & even children, who end up with abusive assholes?

If you have, then you’d understand what I’m talking about.

Abusive people don’t only gaslight & manipulate their partners. They do it to the family of the victims, the victims’ closest friends, the people they attend church with, and even their community.

I’ve personally witnessed this, & I’m not playing the victim. There is no way Scott can win with everyone. What if he did nothing and enabled her unfettered access to the children and something tragic happened? The same people suggesting that he's possibly abusive or "gaslighting" her would then say what a terrible husband and father he was to have not intervened when she was clearly in crisis. It would be Scott's fault if she drove off drunk with them and they died in a car crash. The fact that both of her parents, one of her children and her husband all think she is crazy is enough for me to think a psych hold/evaluation was warranted. I say this as someone who had a grandmother that was schizophrenic and suffered from depression. My mother wasn't gaslighting her mother when she periodically had her committed.

After a twenty year marriage it's hard to believe one partner suddenly went insane. I'm guessing she went to a shrink due to stress, was put on anti-depressants, who knows what else, and continued to drink. I have gone nuts myself on Prozac + wine. I dropped the Prozac.

Mental illness can definitely develop in middle age. Menopause related psychosis, while not common, is well documented with onset of symptoms similar to schizophrenia in the perimenopausal years. Alcohol and drug abuse can rear its ugly head at anytime.

Kelley didn't suddenly develop mental illness: she spoke of mental health issues (and taking antidepressants) in the past and also worked in the mental health field. Presumably what happened is she stopped taking mood stabilizers and started self-medicating with booze and/or pills.

Kelley’s own mother said Kelley has become an addict.

The reason no one will give her money is because of what she will do with it. Her family is paying room and food. Her brother is paying her lawyers and legal fees for her. But they won’t give her cash.

R59 Great! Vyvanse is a schedule II controlled substance. It's an amphetamine similar to Adderall. Among the top side effects are psychosis, panic and delirium. Sounds like just what she needs.

Stimulants can induce or exacerbate mania- that’s well established - so this definitely fits.

It's probably Scott's fault you know. He's paying someone to give her Vyvanse. Especially now that he doesn't live with her where he can slip it in her tea himself. He's likely got an entire town on his payroll. That fits much better than her simply having mental health issues coupled with a substance abuse problem.

R79 I am not going to assume that Scott was a wonderful husband or even a great guy. I don't know them. I will assume that Kelley has some kind of mental illness and drug abuse issue based on the evidence. Scott hasn't said word one against her, but her own immediate family has mentioned their own concerns. Then there is what she has repeatedly displayed in public that confirm this. The only thing Scott said was something about sadly ending a 21 year marriage. He also filed for divorce and briefly had a restraining order which he tried to lift (but he hasn't publicly said anything about that either). He's basically kept his mouth shut and said not one unkind thing about her.

A tale as old as modern psychiatry. I used to work in a mental health crisis facility in the mid to late 80s in N. California around the time meth began to really take hold. For the people wth bipolar or schizoaffective disorders, a pretty substantial proportion who decompensated had gone off medications and begun to self-medicate alcohol and drugs) with predictable outcomes.

One of the tricky issues, at least with Lithium (and I imagine more modern psych meds), is that blood levels can remain therapeutic for weeks after ceasing to take it. It's powerfully reinforcing to feel good and not experience side effects (patients report feeling numb, empty, not quite all there). But the disease didn't go away. The psych meds don't have an immediate effect, but alcohol and controlled substances do. They abatement symptoms in the long run, but they come back with a vengeance. They always do.

The conundrum of mental illnesses involving psychosis is that sufferers have a disease that tells them they don't have a problem. The delusional system/psychosis is that strong. It's hell on everyone they come into contact with.

^ I forgot to add in the first paragraph that the issue of decompesation had much less to do with drugs and alcohol in people who simply had diagnoses of schizophrenia (as opposed to those with the additional affective/emotional component).
