His beloved Anne Bancroft died years ago and he grieved it pretty hard, OP. Perhaps you just remember registering "Mel Brooks" and "death" and your mind associated it with his own.

This reminded me of the 2017 documentary, If You're Not In The Obit, Eat Breakfast. It has Carl Reiner, Mel Brooks, Norman Lear, Betty White, Stan Lee, Dick Van Dyke and more.
Today out of the people who appear in the doc, only Mel Brooks and Dick Van Dyke remain.
