A very good film- that I always thought was boring AF-
Arthur from 1981 (82?)
I think I watched it when I was 20-21 and was not impressed. I am 45 now and watched it again-
I heartily laughed a good 20 times and was also moved - it was a really nice diversion-
I loved it.
Dudley's performance is next level great and he was a very talented guy. Liza (Lizsha) was over the top- but it worked- because like Dudley, she is so fucking likeable- See how she handles a horse making noises during her monologue (Its lovely) and that damn Sir John Gielgud (sp) deserved the Oscar-
The only weak link is the godawful Jill Eikenberry- but it 100% works, because she is supposed to be annoying as fuck.
Highly recommended- A laugh out loud comedy with 3 seriously great performances and a whole lot of heart.
(I could clearly never write copy to promote films)

OP, I'm sure you can identify with a severely depressed alcoholic far more today than at 21!

It is one of my favorite movies ever. And this from someone who saw the previews and predicted it would fail miserably.

It was such a nice return for Liza.

Liza's dumpy father in Arthur was the same actor as Jerry Seinfeld's father on Seinfeld.

I love this movie. Liza: "oh, you poor thing."

Not a film, but the series Six Feet Under.
Originally, I thought Btenda and Margaret Chenowith were batshit crazy.
Now, 20 years later, it's the Fisher clan (especially patriarch Ruth) that is batshit and Brenda and her mom are relatively sane.
In either case, Billie Chenowith is certifiable.

R10, "If you and your undershirt could take a step back, I could enter this dwelling."
My favourite Gielgud quote was, "Hamlet was in big trouble when we left off." LOL, because this is true of every page of Hamlet.

I was working in Manhattan when this was filming. I watched a bit of the scene being filmed where Liza is outside Bergdorf Goodman after stealing a tie and she gets on a bus. Arthur is such a perfect comedy; have seen it many times. When Ricky Gervais was approached to do a remake he flatly refused, saying “Why redo a classic?”
I also watched Streisand directing a scene of Prince of Tides inside Grand Central Terminal.
Grateful I worked in Manhattan for so many years as a big movie buff; you never knew what you could stumble on.

I didn’t know if you were supposed to hate Jill Einkenberrys character or not. Whether she truly loves him or is out for his money like her father is. The one weak link in a terrific film.
Anyone seen Arthur 2 On the rocks?

R17, Your misspelling makes me want to call her Jill Oinkenberry for the remainder of my days-
Her performance is so hammy and over the top in a BAD WAY- like a satire.. I just figured that it was a directorial choice.
You know who else I liked? That hooker in the beginning-
They fleshed her out and made her more than a caricature. And I loved how she genuinely ENJOYED Arthur- it wasn't just to get the $500.00. I was shocked that she told him she became a hooker because her dad raped her and her mom died when she was young (For that time, and for this film, it was kind of hardcore- but effective)
