The other Dem running is JD Scholten who is a former minor league baseball player. He ran unsuccessfully for a US congress seat in 2018 and 2020. He is currently a state representative in the Iowa House of Representatives.

Zach Wahls has a bit more experience in elected office than Scholten does. I think Wahls will win the Dem primary.

There's another Democrat Nathan Sage who has declared his candidacy. Sage doesn't have any experience in elected office.

Sage probably doesn't have much of a chance of winning in a primary. He sort of reminds of Abdul El-Sayed who is running for Gary Peters' US Senate seat in Michigan. El-Sayed doesn't have experience in elected office and he ran for governor of Michigan in 2018, but lost badly to Gretchen Whitmer in the Democratic primary.

El-Sayed was the former head of the Wayne County public health department and has a podcast. His contenders are Congresswoman Haley Stevens and Michigan state senator Mallory McMorrow. El-Sayed is going to lose because he's a Bernie Bro and there are still plenty of moderate Democrats in Michigan who aren't going to back him.

In 2026, people with zero elected office experience like Sage and El-Sayed will lose in primaries or if they win in the primaries they will lose in the general elections.
