Explain to me why certain celebrities get nicknames on this forum
I get why people like Trump and Elon Musk get nicknames: because people hate saying their names, and giving them a degrading nickname makes you feel like you have a tiny bit of power over them.
But I don't get why certain celebrities--especially celebrities people like and want to talk about--get weird nicknames. Why did Taylor Lautner become Tay Tay here, and why did Timothee Chalamet become Tim O'Tay? (Those were both unbelievably annoying.)

I think some were adopted from spellchecker suggestions like HeHe and On Assistance, suggested in place of Heche and Onassis .

If we have to explain why, it seems certain you can't enjoy the game, even if you know the why.

I assume "Tim O'Tay" came into existence because that's how one pronounces his French name.
From google:
[quote] Timothée Chalamet's preferred pronunciation for his first name is "Timothy" in English, while the French pronunciation is "Tim-o-tay". He has stated that he doesn't mind being called "Timothy" or "Timmy" and that he doesn't require people to use the French pronunciation. His last name "Chalamet" is pronounced "SHAL-ə-may."

Tim O’Tay was nicknamed by one particular poster who used that because phonetically that’s how Timothee is pronounced. It stuck almost immediately.

What about David "Tyler" (né Jason) Muir? How did that originate?

R5, it was a play on Mary Tyler Moore who was also a journalist on the eponymous show.

Lens Dunham was another one like Jackie On Assistance that started as a SpellCheck error (or because of a typo).

We all know how OP got the nickname "Stinkbug."

Anne He he (and not He He as noted above) was a typo too because of the missing letter "c" in that notorious typo.

La Belle Pace: the webmaster specifically made it impossible to post Lee Pace’s name here; so a workaround was found.
La Belle Hogg: it just sounds funny.

Try the tennis threads, OP. Even I can’t keep up.

I agree Tim O'Tay is not right. Ratboy is more appropriate.

Sometimes there are threads inveighing against the Trump administration, and so many nicknames are used for so many people I can't even figure out what's being said.

I believe this came about from a typo on a video BrendaD herself made. She's dyslexic and notoriously stupid.

I started Tim O’Tay sometime during the runup to CMBYN. I was also chastised by Muriel at the time. She named me Fangirl #2. I may have been banned for a bit.
Who knows? Maybe she hates Timmy as much as the Ratboy crowd.
