r4 completely agree. Southern CA beach life - surfers, woodies, tanned CA guys and girls at the beach.
We're the last generation that really will remember even small remnants of that life. It's gone forever.

A complete genius, on level with McCartney, Lennon and Dylan, the other greats of that age. One of the few artists that Lennon felt were on par with the Beatles.
Deeply troubled life, unfortunately. Agree with other posters that the life he wrote about and lived in his youth - bright, sunny, post-war Southern California - is long gone. Now memorialized in the the many Beach Boys songs. RIP.

R36 - that is when the family hired Dr Eugene Landy to get him away from the housekeeper. He got him off drigs and he lost about 200 lbs and he started functioning. Brian had stopped driving years before. Dr Landy made him buy a car - gave him a Thomas Huide and made him âfigure it outâ and drive by himself to New York. If he could do that he could do anything. I donât remember the details but that relationship went SOUR. Lawsuits etc âŠ.. God - beautiful music âŠ.

It was in many ways better. It was indeed a very different California.
For starters, the California of 1964 had a population of around 18 million people. Today its population is nearly 40 million. The quaint, the bohemian, the peace is mostly gone.

There's still plenty to love about Los Angeles. But I do have a very romantic view of the LA of the late '50s and '60s. The Screen Gems lot where they were filming The Monkees, Bewitched, I Dream of Jeannie and Gidget- the Whisky a Go Go when The Doors were the house band- the watering holes where the Rat Pack reigned supreme. Ben Franks on Sunset. Rexall Drugstore on Beverly and Schwabs. I'd give anything to live in that time.
I do feel lucky to have moved to LA in 1992, when some of those things were still around. And I worked at Tower Records and met... Brian Wilson!

The Dennis Wilson/Manson connection is endlessly fascinating to me. Dennis was rich, famous, and fucking HOT. The best looking Beach Boy, and he had BDF to boot!
This article from December of 1968, 7 months before the murders, is wild. Dennis describes the family fully, and even name checks Charlie. It seems like he was a full fledged family member, and was availing himself of all the "free" sex, and I'm sure diseases, they had to offer.
How BORED must this hot, rich rock star have been to get involved with, and promote, this cult of misfits.

[quote]Today, the world lost a genius, and I lost a cousin by blood and my partner in music. Brian Wilson wasnât just the heart of The Beach Boysâhe was the soul of our sound. From the first time we sang together as kids in my living room, I knew there was something otherworldly in him. His musical gifts were unmatched. The melodies he dreamed up, the emotions he poured into every noteâBrian changed the course of music forever. Our journey together was filled with moments of brilliance, heartbreak, laughter, complexity and most of all, LOVE . Like all families, we had our ups and downs. But through it all, we never stopped loving each other, and I never stopped being in awe of what he could do when he sat at a piano or his spontaneity in the studio. Brianâs unique artistry and our collaboration gave the world the American dream of optimism, joy, and a sense of freedomâmusic that made people feel good, made them believe in an endless summer and endless possibilities. It was one of the greatest blessings of my life to experience that creative space with him. It was our privilege to make the world believe in sunshine, surfing, and teenage dreams. My life was forever changed by Pet Sounds, God Only Knows, In My Room, Good Vibrations, The Warmth of the Sun and a hundred other pieces of his soul wrapped in music. He allowed us to show the world what vulnerability and brilliance sound like in harmony. He was fragile, he was intense, he was funnyâand he was one of a kind. My wife, Jacquelyne, and I are heartbroken. She stood beside me through so many chapters of this story, and we both send our love and prayers to Brianâs family, his children, and all who were touched by his life and gifts. Brian, you once asked, âWouldnât it be nice if we were older?â Now you are timeless. May you rest in the peace you so deeply deserve, surrounded by the heavenly music you helped create. May your spirit soar as high as your falsetto, may your wings spread in effortless flight. Thank you for the harmonies, the memories, and the love. Death leaves a heartache no one can heal, Love leaves a memory no one can steal. Iâll miss you forever, my beloved cousin. â Mike

R80 not 10 miles. If you went to Redondo High⊠no more than 7 to Hawthorne High.
Ask me anythingâI grew up in Hawthorne. Our first house was one block over from the Wilson house (that section is goneâŠitâs now underneath the 105 Freeway). I went to the same elementary school, intermediate school and high school as the Wilson brothers, with many of the same teachers they had.

Dr. Fred Morgan was head of the HHS music dept. for too long, from Brianâs era well into the 80s. He was an odd fuck, but for a long while Hawthorne was known for its marching band and drill team.
Morgan famously gave Brian an F for one of his surfing compositions, because he ignored the actual assignment. It was later changed to an A.

One reason Brian seems so discombobulated in that clip: in the 2000s, Hawthorne High was essentially torn down and rebuilt. The only parts remaining were the old boysâ gym, the railroad tracks that ran between the main campus and the sports fields, and the addressâ4859 West El Segundo, just off the San Diego Freeway (405).

That was a touching link at r128. From 2022 - Wilson is frail, but understands what's going on around him and answers questions. The panning shot of his childhood photos is nostalgic, given his passing this week.
I know southern California doesn't do a lot of historical remembrance, such as naming buildings, schools, parks, etc, unless it's republican politicians or right-wing movie stars (Reagan, Wayne, etc) - but it would be nice to see some eventual respect for the Beach Boys and the Wilsons in LA County.

I just finished watching a fascinating documentary about the music scene in the 60's and it's called Echos in the Canyon. It talks about the Byrds, Mams and Papas, and Crosby Stills Nash, Beach Boys and particularly Brian Wilson and his genius. Jakob Dylan, son of Bob, and an accomplished musician in his own right, interviews various people and performs with them. it was interesting to me because I love music and origin stories. I also find Jakob kind of hot. (Straight, married, 4 kids) I think Brian loved music and understood his unique gift, but really had no idea of the impact he had or even fully appreciate his success. He was a very humble kind person who was totally absorbed with his music.

R139 I actually happened to see Echo In The Canyon in a small movie theater when it came out, I believe shortly before the pandemic hit. I agree it is a great documentary, and it does a great job of covering that ephemeral Laurel Canyon music scene of the late to mid 1960s. Also the soundtrack itself is worth owning. Amazing cover songs.

It's hard to believe now with all the rewriting of history going on, but by 1966 The Beach Boys were seen as quite un-cool.
"Pet Sounds" was only able to make it to #10 on the Billboard chart because of "Wouldn't it be Nice" and ""Sloop John B" both traditional Beach Boys style songs. "God Only Knows" made zero impact, wasn't even in the top 100 Billboard songs of 1966. Their next album only made it to #41.
Back then The Beach Boys could not shake their "surfer" image. They were seen as guys who sung about cars and chicks and that was out of date in the latter half of the '60s. Even their name by then was cringe worthy.
They only started to be taken seriously years later.

It was simply the B-side of "Wouldn't It Be Nice?" for years. Yes, the rock press did everything they could to convince us the Beach Boys were uncool. I don't remember which one, but some wag referred to them as "Doris Days on surfboards." We were into the Beatles then. The Rolling Stones. The beach WHO? Pet WHAT? I think this relative failure was the key element to Brian's not being able to finish Smile in 1967.
I was convinced of the Beach Boys' cultural irrelevance, and I didn't buy Pet Sounds until it was rereleased in 1974. And oh, what a mistake I realized I'd made. It was truly the best album I'd heard in years, possibly since 1966 (although I did keep buying albums by the Beatles, the Stones, and especially for me, the Kinks). Ever since, I've trusted my own judgment over that of the critics.

They managed to survive the British Invasion as The Four Seasons did. They still came up with some noteworthy hits, especially "Good Vibrations". But no one was waiting for the next Beach Boys album. In the 60s no thought of Brian Wilson as some musical genius on the level of Lennon/McCartney. That all came later.

Not hard to believe dear, anyone who knows anything about pop music knows this.
No one is rewriting history, we are choosing to remember Brian Wilson as a brilliant musician who eventually got the respect he deserves.

I think some of that resurgence started after James Watt banned The Beach Boys from performing in the national mall because they were a Rock band that brought about the "wrong element". And he basically got laughed at, by verybody, including President Reagan and VP Bush.

He certainly didn't have the output of day, Bob Dylan, creativity of Frank Zappa, musicality of Stevie Wonder or Prince.
He wrote a couple good pop songs but never got past the treacly pablum that made up most of the Beach Boy's catalogue. His inability to break through his musical limitations is what broke him. Sad.
by Anonymous | reply 152 | June 15, 2025 12:42 AM |
What broke him was horrific abuse for years at the hands of his dad/manager and untreated schizophrenia. He made plenty of bank from the Beach Boys and his songs so was well taken care of financially, no issues there.
He did far more than write a 'couple of good pop songs'. He had a wide-reaching influence as a writer, producer and arranger. The Beach Boys influenced a lot of artists.
Heck even Mike Love was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame just last week.

When I was a pre-schooler they were big among my elder teenaged siblings but that came to a quick end with The Beatles.
There seemed to be a brief revival and renewed respect when I hit my teens about ten years later but it was party music. No one I knew listened to them outside of a party atmosphere.
My mother liked them

A lot of the rock critics and even the music fans of that period were wrongly lumping Beach Boys music in with the other lightweight pop fair of pre-Beatles era 1960-1963 that were rock and roll adjacent. The post 1964 rock movements was hip and acts that came before that were seen as square. But mostly due to Brian Wilson's songwriting and vision, the majority of their music transcended that genre. I recall as a teen in the late 1970s I joined one of the mail record clubs (RCA?) and I recall among the 10 albums I got to pick, choosing two Beach Boys compilation albums. I recall being pleasantly surprised how many really good songs there were that still held up 10-15 years later.

The best use of a Beach Boys song I've ever scene was a long-vanished YouTube video that had "Be True to Your School" played over footage of the prom scene in CARRIE.

R135 TRUST ME, that historical marker is underwhelming in person. Due to the vagueness of time and more important issues in Hawthorne, I doubt anything bigger or better will be named for those boys. The local historical society has some good stuff, but otherwise the keepers of the flame are Facebook groups geared to Hawthorne High, the South Bay and similar.

I was watching those ABC news documentary from 1966 for footage of Leonard Bernstein discussing the Beatles, when this caught my attention.
Brian Wilson performing Surf's Up. I was absolutely blown away by this footage. The lyrics, the out of this world falsetto. The vo discusses this as a soon to be exposed to the world masterpiece that might change pop music as we knew it. And it absolutely would have been if Brian had been able to hold it together and finish Smile.
Smile would've topped Sgt Pepper, which is exactly what Brian had in mind. Unfortunately, due to his schizophrenia, Smile was scrapped and this song put on the back burner. Not released for 5 years after this was filmed.
Below, I will post the Fendertones version which is a recreation of what Brian Wilson had in mind when he wrote it. Van Dyke Parks lyrics are stunning as well. I think the song is the greatest masterpiece of pop history. Unfortunately released 5 years too late.
I imagine this being the penultimate track on Smile. I imagine Surfs Up fading out, and the surging into the grand finale Good Vibrations.

It's a very pretty song, as there were many back then. Sort of Beatle-esque. But I don't get why it's considered to be some sort of pop masterpiece today.

It's funny how things work. Brian got a hold of the Beatles' Rubber Soul, which my mother had as a teenager...still has.... and he was blown away. He loved it. And from that he decided to do something unique and Pet Sounds was born. Paul McCartney heard Pet Sounds and was blown away. He thought it was amazing. He has said, "Without Pet Sounds, there would be no Sgt. Pepper."

Same with the Carpenters. It wasn't until years after Karen Carpenter died that their music was revaluated and Karen was given her due as an incredibly talented vocalist and Richard as an incredibly talented composer/arranger.
by Anonymous | reply 170 | June 16, 2025 4:34 PM |
This was also the fate of the Bee Gees, due to Saturday Night Fever and their glitzy disco era. People forgot they were talented singers, arrangers, and songwriters with a long pre-disco musical history.

I know he had mental health issues as a result of the horrible abuse he suffered, and he was also diagnosed as schizophrenic . He had one break they talked about where he actually heard voices, etc. I wonder now if he had undiagnosed or misdiagnosed autism. As I watch him speaking, I think he was on the spectrum.
by Anonymous | reply 180 | June 20, 2025 4:44 PM |

The hallucinogenics drugs he experimented with in the mid 1960s further exacerbated his already fragile mental state. This is similar to scenarios that later also permanently effected Syd Barrett and Sly Stone (Sylvester Stewart).

Jack Rieley as a new manager was credited with the early 70s success the Beach Boys enjoyed
Biographer Steven Gaines offered, "It was reportedly noticed by members of the group that Jack Rieley's young male assistant seemed to be living with him. Whether the relationship was sexual or not was never determined, but in the homophobic enclave of the Beach Boys, enough of a shadow had been cast. ... Carl made the trip back to Holland and fired Rieley."
