McClatchy Media folds up four magazines
McClatchy Media has decided to shut down four magazines by the end of June. In Touch, Life & Style, Closer and First for Women will all be history by June 27, the company told employees on May 30. They also own US Weekly, which was acquired as part of the accelerate360 merger that In Touch, Life & Style, Closer and First for Women were also a part of. US Weekly has not been affected by the shut-down.
“Despite the best efforts of many of our talented colleagues, we have been unable to develop a profitable business model for four of our magazine titles. First for Women, In Touch, Life & Style and Closer will publish their final editions between June 20 and 27,” McClatchy spokesperson Julie Pendley said .
The announcement is just the latest in a continuingly tumultuous time for news media. In the same week, Business Insider informed it’s staff that they would experience a 21% workforce reduction as they look to pivot more to AI uses in the newsroom.

I'm surprised McClatchy owns these magazines. Actually, Chatham Asset Management LLC. I hope their newspapers aren't next on the chopping block.

R9 she's pushing 60. That ship has sailed. It's no wonder these mags are going under. They suck ass and recycle stories over and over. I see the covers at the grocery store.

Let’s face it, there aren’t actual stars anymore. These people are no better than throwaway TikTok trash. We’ve become completely desensitized to actual scandal. There are no celebrities people wish to read about. It’s why they’ve all turned to politics for a sideshow and drama.

First of all – Oh, dear!
Secondly, this is the wonderful new world that AI is ushering in. Expect this to be turbocharged with the new bill that prohibits any state from independently regulating AI. Corporations want to sell us their products, but they see us as an undesirable nuisance otherwise.

Me too. Although they've already gutted many of them beyond recognition. I used to work at a McClatchy paper and fortunately was able to jump before I was pushed.

Life & Style and In Touch were always junk. Closer was a tabloid for the retirement set.

My aunt gave my grandmother a subscription to "Closer" thinking she would really like it.
Instead, my grandmother opened up the card and said, "So now I have to tell everyone I get Closer every week? Depressing."
It was hilarious, but my aunt didn't get the joke.

The barber I go to always has "In Touch" on the magazine rack.
You can read a whole issue in about 15 minutes.
No exaggeration.

Does anyone else remember when the Sunday paper in any large metropolitan area weighed 20 pounds?
If you were in the market for a job, apartment, new or used house, or new or used car, you simply had to buy the Sunday paper. If you wanted to know the latest sales, you'd have to read the Sunday paper and its inserts. If you wanted coupons, again you'd scan the inserts. If you wanted to know what's on television for the week, you'd have to buy the Sunday paper (or pick up a copy of TV Guide).
I haven't bought the Sunday paper in years. I don't even know if grocery or convenience stores even sell them anymore. The Sunday e-edition of the local newspaper isn't much bigger than the weekday editions.

I haven't bought one in years either, r24. My parents finally cancelled their newspaper subscription last year but I know the last few years the Sunday edition was delivered with the Saturday paper and together they were maybe half of what the classic Sunday editions were. There might have been some retail coupons but no store circulars. I don't even think there was a classified ads section. I think there was a TV highlights box but no actual listings. The comics section was surprisingly large, though. Even the daily paper had at least 3 full pages of strips.

R13 That’s not true at all.
Gossip magazines and tabloids are for old people.
I mean Perez Hilton and his gossip blog was 20 years ago and even those sites like Gawker and Pink is the New Blog don’t even exist anymore because even the medium has changed since then.
Due Moix is the gossip site today and it’s been spread out by TikTok influencers and etc.

That’s completely true. It’s a very small group of people who read “celebrity” garbage anymore (usually teen girls and homosexual men) because there simply aren’t stars. It’s the reason why politics has become the new entertainment.
