STRAW on Netflix

Has anyone watched Tyler Perry's 'Straw' on Netflix ? I watched tonight after seeing Taraji P Henson on 'The View' last week, and Sherrie Shepard the other day. Both women were very good in their roles (yes, even SS), but the movie had plenty of clichés which rendered it 'mostly unbelievable' thanks to Tyler Perry. On the plus-side it's very fast-paced and worth a watch.

Is Oprah in it? or Madea?

I love them both, and often confuse them.

Thanks but no thanksl

I despise Tyler Perry, but I love Taraji P Henson - so I'm not sure I can take it since he's associated with it.

I watched it and message to Tyler-call me; I’m no professional writer but I’m pretty sure I can help you out on your next movie.

Should this film be avoided by someone with severe anxiety/conflict aversion issues?

by Anonymousreply 5June 11, 2025 3:10 AM

The most watched show on Netflix right now, people love his shit. And it really is shit, with next to no cultural or artistic merit.

R3 I agree - the writing was atrocious. I think a middle school writing class is doing his scripts. However, Taraji acted the hell out of this and did the best with what she was given, which made me stay tuned. Sherri wasn't as bad as I feared she would be - she was convincing as the bank manager. Overall, it wasn't the 'amazing' movie Whoopi and Sunny claimed it to be the past week, but definitely worth the watch.

OP Sherri is a relatively good actor. I’m always surprised by how she doesn’t suck.

His stuff is bad but it's what j like to call good-bad. From Taraji's over acting, to the paint by numbers soap opera plot, to the 'strong black woman' tropes....the man has a license to just print money at this point.

Will definitely give it a miss, I despise that chitlin' circuit, closeted queen.

R10 What was glaringly obvious was that there were three white characters in the movie - male cop, female cop, FBI director - and Perry made sure he wrote them as 'the bad guys'. Funny, I don't recall Sunny and Whoopi bringing this up in either interview with Taraji or Sherrie. I wonder why ? I guess they didn't notice.

I've got a good book to finish.

by Anonymousreply 12June 11, 2025 10:48 PM

No, I don’t think so. What’s sad is Henson doesn’t have new projects (even tv) listed. Her last movie was The Color Purple.

Is it middle age? Is it all of that industry talk from TCP’s press tour?

by Anonymousreply 13June 11, 2025 10:57 PM

Too depreshing

by Anonymousreply 14June 11, 2025 11:41 PM

[quote]What’s sad is Henson doesn’t have new projects (even tv) listed.

She may have pissed off some people during The Color Purple tour and said some things that she probably shouldn't have said out loud or saved for her book.

by Anonymousreply 15June 11, 2025 11:46 PM

I gave up. Minor spoiler: in the first 15 minutes, Taraji gets fired, her bank account gets frozen, the state takes away her medicine-dependent daughter, she's assaulted by a racist cop, her car breaks down, and she's evicted and her stuff thrown out on the lawn.

Tyler P is anything but subtle.

by Anonymousreply 16June 12, 2025 12:12 AM

R15 But did all that really happen ? Watch the whole movie.

As for Taraji, I think she pulled a 'Mo'nique' with TCP and will have a hard time finding work. No one wants to work / hire someone who likes to talk out of turn.

by Anonymousreply 17June 12, 2025 12:18 PM

Just watched it tonight. Not bad, but why is it called Straw?

by Anonymousreply 18June 13, 2025 12:52 AM

... as in "the last straw."
