Was he gay?

Ive always loved that picture of him. If he were he was tortured by it and would never have admitted it . I think he was too much of an alcoholic to be anything .

by Anonymousreply 1June 11, 2025 1:14 AM

There’s a story he was drinking with friends, saw an effeminate man across the way, got up, crossed the road, and punched the guy in the face.

Maybe he was just an asshole.

by Anonymousreply 2June 11, 2025 1:17 AM

No.

by Anonymousreply 3June 11, 2025 1:32 AM

He was a pussy.

And I'm the man to prove it.

by Anonymousreply 4June 11, 2025 1:36 AM

His masculinity was so performative he was like a butch lesbian trapped in a man’s body.

by Anonymousreply 5June 11, 2025 1:51 AM

Has MAGA managed to ban "The Old Man and the Sea" yet because the story involves the relationship between an old man and a 14-year old boy?

by Anonymousreply 6June 11, 2025 1:56 AM

I could have sworn I read his mother dressed him in girl clothes when he was a baby/toddler. She also had his hair shoulder length when he was very young. I'm not sure but I could have sworn I read his last wife said he still dressed up in women's clothes on occasion.

by Anonymousreply 7June 11, 2025 1:57 AM

I swear too much.

by Anonymousreply 8June 11, 2025 1:57 AM

[quote] I could have sworn I read his mother dressed him in girl clothes when he was a baby/toddler. She also had his hair shoulder length when he was very young.

All that is true, and has been in all the most recent biographies of him.

[quote] I'm not sure but I could have sworn I read his last wife said he still dressed up in women's clothes on occasion.

That I had not heard--but I would not be surprised.

by Anonymousreply 9June 11, 2025 2:00 AM

He had a beautiful smile.

R7 so did hundreds of thousands of other little boys of the time

by Anonymousreply 11June 11, 2025 2:41 AM

[quote] I could have sworn I read his mother dressed him in girl clothes when he was a baby/toddler.

That was very common in the 19th and early 20th centuries.

He may have been what we now call an "ally". Hemingway had notable gay friends including Gertrude Stein, Alice B. Toklas, Sidney Franklin, and Glenway Wescott. He was so entrenched with the artistic, expat crowd that it wouldn't be surprising if he experimented. I doubt he identified as a homosexual and he probably preferred women. Like with many other historical figures, we will probably never know for certain.

by Anonymousreply 13June 11, 2025 3:27 AM

Many of 20th-century culture's most visible he-men had masculinity problems.

Hemingway was obsessed with sexuality, and told Fitzgerald he was certain he was gay, and both men speculated whether or not Henry james accidentally castrated himself in his youht.

As for John Wayne:

Zelda said that the way I was built I could never make any woman happy and that was what upset her originally. She said it was a matter of measurements. I have never felt the same since she said that and I have to know truly.”

In not so many words, Hemingway told Fitzgerald to meet him in “Le Water” or French slang for “bathroom” so he could have a look to see if what he was fretting about was actually worth fretting about.

In the bathroom Hemingway had Fitzgerald drop his trousers and upon closer inspection gave him his diagnosis…

“You’re perfectly fine.”

He loved cats

by Anonymousreply 16June 11, 2025 3:40 AM

That photo screams bipolar.

by Anonymousreply 17June 11, 2025 3:47 AM

Given his bipolar disorder, no doubt he dabbled in a manic phase.

by Anonymousreply 18June 11, 2025 3:48 AM

R11 and R12, I think the key point was he may have continued the practice into adulthood. Let's jump a generation to...

"Gloria Hemingway (born Gregory Hancock Hemingway, November 12, 1931 – October 1, 2001) was an American physician and writer who was the third and youngest child of author Ernest Hemingway. Although she was born a male and lived most of her life publicly as a man, she struggled with her gender identity from a young age. In her 60s, she underwent gender transition surgery and preferred the name Gloria when possible."

According to trannies, Hemingway was transgender.

According to DL r20 is an obsessed nutcase

by Anonymousreply 24June 11, 2025 4:15 AM

Gloria Hemingway had 4 wives, one of whom she married twice, and 8 children.

by Anonymousreply 25June 11, 2025 4:41 AM

R20 A transwoman once asked me, about 20 years ago, "Did you know Ernest Hemingway was a woman?"

by Anonymousreply 27June 11, 2025 5:24 AM

He looks a lot like my dad in this photo.

by Anonymousreply 28June 11, 2025 5:46 AM

Not only did he have all those cats, he lived in Key West.

by Anonymousreply 29June 11, 2025 5:55 AM

I think his house in Key West is somewhat of a cat sanctuary, isn't it?

by Anonymousreply 30June 11, 2025 6:11 AM

Yes r30.

by Anonymousreply 31June 11, 2025 6:13 AM

R30 It is. They are known for being polydactyl (having supernumerary digits) which is a dominant trait in cats. They neuter most of the cats but keep some intact to keep the colony going. They are descendants of his original cats.

He was obsessed with appearing macho. In his writing he seemed to take out all the joy, humor and prose, as if afraid people would think he was effeminate (a "writer", you know...). And finally the ultimate gay cliche': suicide.

His brother came out as trans late in life.

by Anonymousreply 34June 11, 2025 8:25 AM

R34 Suicides often run in families. Hemingway's father, brother and sister also committed suicide.

Hemingway had a number of homosexual (term used then) friends. In his memoir, A Moveable Feast, Hemingway recounts a visit to Stein and Toklas's home in Paris where he observed that Stein rarely addressed his (Hemingway's) wife, and he in turn treated Alice the same way, leaving the two "wives" to chat together.

I don't think there is sufficient evidence to claim that Hemingway was a closeted gay man.

by Anonymousreply 35June 11, 2025 8:45 AM

"He looks a lot like my dad in this photo." Well I hope it's a "HAPPY" father's day for you, r28!

by Anonymousreply 36June 11, 2025 11:11 AM

Didn’t his granddaughter kill herself?

by Anonymousreply 37June 11, 2025 11:12 AM

R37 You are right. His granddaughter, Margaux Louise Hemingway, killed herself in 1996. Her body was so badly decomposed that the coroner couldn't be certain how long she had been dead. That's 5 close family members (including Hemingway himself) that died by suicide.

by Anonymousreply 38June 11, 2025 12:10 PM

A syllogism:

Hemingway was close friends with Gary Cooper, and even wrote “For Whom the Bell Tolls” with him in mind.

Despite multiple female lovers, Gary Cooper also had gay liaisons.

Therefore, Hemingway and Cooper had a gay liaison.

Is he dead yet?

by Anonymousreply 43June 11, 2025 12:26 PM

Well my dads been dead for 33 years so he doesn’t look like that anymore.

by Anonymousreply 44June 11, 2025 8:58 PM

There is a multi-part documentary about Hemingway on one of the streamers. I don't like his writing so I sat through the doco in lieu of reading any more of it. It was one of those studious ones based on letters and acclaimed biographies, and it maintained he was a lifelong cross-dresser, but obviously it's ludicrous to suggest he was trans, given his immense respect for toxic masculinity. I honestly can't remember whether there were suggestions in it that he had gay experiences. Certainly not relationships, though.

by Anonymousreply 45June 12, 2025 11:22 AM

Some biographies of him delve into his and one of his wives cross-dressing together as part of sex.
