Anastacia- why did her career flop so badly in the states?

She had some great songs but they never were embraced in the USA but were in some other countries.

Why do you think?

One Day In Your Life was a great song

We already had Britney and Christina.

by Anonymousreply 1June 11, 2025 12:10 AM

Cool. She was NOTHING like Britney nor Christina. Her music was not like theirs and her voice was different.

by Anonymousreply 2June 11, 2025 12:12 AM

Well you asked, and I answered.

by Anonymousreply 3June 11, 2025 12:14 AM

Oh, I forgot all about her.

by Anonymousreply 4June 11, 2025 12:15 AM

She was much older than Britney and Christina

by Anonymousreply 5June 11, 2025 12:16 AM

I thought it was Taylor Dayne the first time I heard her.

by Anonymousreply 6June 11, 2025 12:19 AM

She was huge in the US gay clubs and US dance charts, but yes, she charted a lot better in European regular charts.

I think she came around a time when US music was changing to more dance-oriented, but not fully yet. Europe always embraced dance music.

That's my take on it. If she had debuted a few years later, I think she would have been bigger in the US.

America was late getting into EDM on a large scale until mid-late 2000s. Yes it was always popular with the gays and those in the know, but you hardly ever heard any of it on the radio. Europe never had that issue.

by Anonymousreply 7June 11, 2025 12:21 AM

I loved "Sick and Tired"

by Anonymousreply 10June 11, 2025 12:45 AM

A dance diva in glasses can only go so far.

by Anonymousreply 11June 11, 2025 12:46 AM

She was really old.

by Anonymousreply 12June 11, 2025 12:49 AM

I even got punched in the face in LA!

by Anonymousreply 13June 11, 2025 12:54 AM

I played this often as a club DJ (the remixed video) and it gained a following. I thought she had IT and would be bigger. When I see JLO it's like she is a Temu Anastasia.

I’m convinced she was bitchy to somebody and they had it out for her.

by Anonymousreply 15June 11, 2025 12:54 AM

R14 haven’t heard that in 20 years

by Anonymousreply 16June 11, 2025 12:55 AM

Rasputin was plotting against her!

by Anonymousreply 17June 11, 2025 12:56 AM

From a Facebook fan page…

Despite being American herself, Anastacia didn't achieve the same level of success in the US as she did in other countries. She revealed that she fell victim to an unrelated dispute between her record label and radio, and her name was unfairly blacklisted as a result.

Her first two albums (Not That Kind and Freak of Nature) received TV promotion and some chart success was achieved with I'm Outta Love peaking at #92 on the Billboard Hot 100. One Day in Your Life and Love is a Crime both hit #1 on US Club Play, while You'll Never Be Alone peaked at #28 on Adult Contemporary.

There were plans to release and promote the third, self-titled album, with a new video shot for Left Outside Alone and primetime TV appearances scheduled, however the release was cancelled, as Anastacia stated that she didn't want to see a project she loved so much fail.

Despite this, Anastacia has gained a number of American fans over the years who love her just as much as the rest of the world.

Thanksch for contributing szschooooooo much, R10.

You're schwelll.

I always liked Left Outside Alone. The Jason Nevins club mix is really good

Taylor Dane, Anastasia, and Fergie all have the perfect big white female voices that mix R&B and soul but are also on the same level as metal singers like Axl Rose. That’s why they’re so good making dance music.

I don’t know if I’m articulating that right.

But I feel like Anastasia just came at the wrong time. Taylor was in the 80s and Fergie was in the 2000s and Anastasia being in the 90s and early 2000s just didn’t connect to the music that was out at that time.

by Anonymousreply 21June 11, 2025 1:44 AM

Forgot about her! Loved her songs

by Anonymousreply 22June 11, 2025 1:46 AM

r19 Let's take a break from the stupid Liza thing. It hasn't been funny in a long time. Think of something original.

“I can go to the grocery store and no one recognizes me”

by Anonymousreply 24June 11, 2025 2:23 AM

Yeah - the whole sunglasses/spectacles thing got old - I wonder why she always wore those or if they were needed?

She was HUGE in gay clubs - figures somebody at a label had a beef with her. I bet they blocked her to protect one of their own artists in a similar category.

by Anonymousreply 25June 11, 2025 2:48 AM

r25 see r18

by Anonymousreply 26June 11, 2025 2:50 AM

R26 - yes that was what I reacted to. But I don't understand a beef between a label and radio as the cause - I think there was something else going on. That would mean all artists on her label would have suffered. This seems a bit more selective.

Labels can stop artists in their tracks. When Joan Jett went solo, she built a huge following in US and in Europe - but no label would touch her. Part of that is sexism, maybe part is homophobia as well - but she had to start her own fucking label with her manager in order to get I love Rock n Roll on the radio.

I LOOOOOVE Joan Jett - there's a really great documentary about her life on free channel Tubi - she's a bad ass bitch, but absolutely nobody ever wanted to do anything for her or with her for decades. I suspect because she was a lesbian. And she STILL had a lot of hits.

by Anonymousreply 27June 11, 2025 3:02 AM

R16 It was fun to listen to again tonight .

by Anonymousreply 28June 11, 2025 4:31 AM

Taylor Dayne knockoff.

by Anonymousreply 29June 11, 2025 4:33 AM

She made eurotrash music.

by Anonymousreply 30June 11, 2025 4:33 AM

Because she lied about being a Romanov!

by Anonymousreply 31June 11, 2025 4:46 AM

She had breast cancer twice. I think her health played into her missing her shot. I only know her from Divas in Las Vegas. She had a cool look and vibe.

by Anonymousreply 32June 11, 2025 5:40 AM

I think that was a similar voice and tone to Kristine W., who had HUGE hits one after another at that time.

And they looked VERY similar - petite blondes with big voices.

Kristine W. had some of the biggest songs of my memory and they hold up. Anastascia's well - sound consistent but it's the same sound.

by Anonymousreply 33June 11, 2025 5:45 AM

Anastacia wasn’t petite.

by Anonymousreply 34June 11, 2025 5:46 AM

R34 - 5ft 2in and with washboard abs would prove you to be wrong. Very wrong.

by Anonymousreply 35June 11, 2025 5:59 AM

I lived in Germany when she was popular... I don't really have an answer except perhaps she just wasn't as marketable in the US due to being older. Hell, she's older than I am. In the early 2000s it was all about Britney, Christina, Jessica Simpson, Mandy Moore, etc.

by Anonymousreply 36June 11, 2025 6:09 AM

Joan Jett was far bigger solo than when in the Runaways, r27. As you yourself say, she had a lot of hits. I think she was even marketed as a pinup for the more rocker boys.

by Anonymousreply 37June 11, 2025 6:16 AM

I loved "Boom" which was the official song of the 2002 FIFA World Cup.

The first time I heard of her was on the MTV competition show "The Cut," a precursor to American Idol. This was in the late 90s and that's where she made her television debut with "I'm Not That Kind." Immediately I fell in love with her Taylor Dayne-meets-Chaka-Khan-meets-Tina-Turner voice and sound.

I remember David Foster was one of the judges on the show and he said that he loved her voice and sound, but didn't like her fashion sense. Silly shit.

Her voice sounds like an older woman's voice. That's off putting to American pop listeners.

by Anonymousreply 40June 11, 2025 6:26 AM

She shaved 8 years off her age, trying to pass for 22 when she was actually 30 (and looked 35).

Even in the pre-social media era, it was ridiculously obvious.

This was not the face of a 22-year-old:

That’s a load of bullshit.

by Anonymousreply 43June 11, 2025 6:35 AM

Another well-connected artist must have gotten her blacklisted. Like Beyoncé did to Keri Hilson.

by Anonymousreply 44June 11, 2025 8:35 AM

R35 washboard abs negates petite.

by Anonymousreply 45June 11, 2025 6:26 PM

R44 what a joke

by Anonymousreply 46June 11, 2025 6:27 PM

Jenna Ortega is what petite is. Megan Fox isn’t petite. Britney was never petite. Christina when she first broke out was petite.

Muscle build isn’t petite.

by Anonymousreply 47June 11, 2025 6:28 PM

I sat across the aisle from her on a flight from Sydney and she could not have been nicer. I didn't know who she was until a flight attendant told me she was a famous singer. A real sweetheart.

by Anonymousreply 48June 11, 2025 6:28 PM

[quote]I didn't know who she was until a flight attendant told me she was a famous singer.

“Famous” is a bit of a stretch.

by Anonymousreply 49June 11, 2025 7:32 PM

[Quote] I think that was a similar voice and tone to Kristine W., who had HUGE hits one after another at that time.

Her hits were on the Dance Charts and were played in gay clubs. Did she even hit the pop charts once?

Dance Charts in 2005 = 12 radio stations

by Anonymousreply 51June 11, 2025 7:52 PM

She seems really nice. I didn’t like her voice though. Maybe if she had sang soul instead of pop music, hard to say.

by Anonymousreply 56June 11, 2025 10:40 PM

That name is atrocious.

by Anonymousreply 57June 11, 2025 10:42 PM

That's her real name BTW.

by Anonymousreply 58June 11, 2025 10:42 PM

She had no hits.

by Anonymousreply 59June 11, 2025 11:57 PM

r34 / r45 / r47 Are you ok? You seem very hurt by that person's petite comment. I hope things improve.

by Anonymousreply 60June 12, 2025 2:25 AM

[quote] And they looked VERY similar - petite blondes with big voices.

Kristine W is NOT petite. She is about 6 feet tall without heels.

by Anonymousreply 61June 12, 2025 3:21 AM

Luff huh.

by Anonymousreply 62June 12, 2025 3:22 AM

I never found Anastacia's music as compelling as Taylor Dayne or Kristine W. She had a good voice and at least one song I liked - the Roger Sanchez remix of "Paid My Dues."
